The Seattle Mariners signed free-agent veteran outfielder Leonys Martin to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. Martin has been playing in Japan for the Chiba Lotte Marines since the middle of 2019. He made his major-league debut with the Texas Rangers back in 2011 and played briefly for Seattle in 2016 and for part of the 2017 season. Overseas, the 34-year-old slashed just .220/.350/.461 over three-plus years. The left-handed-hitting Martin played nine years in the big leagues before heading to Japan and hit .244/.301/.367 with a .668 OPS, 58 home runs, 228 RBI and 126 stolen bases in 770 games played. He'll be a long shot to find regular playing time if he's with the big-league club in 2023.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Leonys Martin's struggles at the plate forced the Indians to make a tough decision with the outfielder.Martín, who overcame a life-threatening bacterial infection last summer after arriving in a trade, was designated for assignment on Saturday. He was batting .199 with nine home runs and 19 RBIs in 65 games.Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said the decision to part ways with the 31-year-old Martín was difficult."Obviously, with all the things we've been through with Leonys and his family to this point, it wasn't easy," Antonetti said before the Indians hosted the Detroit Tigers. "But we also have an obligation to do what we think is the right thing for the rest of the team."Cleveland acquired Martín from the Tigers at the trade deadline last season, but he played only six games before becoming ill and being hospitalized.Antonetti said the move had nothing to do with the argument Martín had with star shortstop Francisco Lindor in the dugout on Wednesday... CLEVELAND (AP) — The Cleveland Indians have designated outfielder Leonys Martin for assignment on Saturday.Martin, who overcame a life-threatening bacterial infection last summer, batted .199 with nine home runs and 19 RBIs in 65 games.Indians president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti said the decision to part ways with Martin was difficult but he felt it was the right move for the team.Cleveland acquired Martin from the Detroit Tigers at the trade deadline last season, but he played only six games before becoming ill and missed the rest of the season.Antonetti said the move had nothing to do with the dugout argument Martin had with star shortstop Francisco Lindor after the center fielder didn't make a catch at the wall Wednesday against Texas. The Indians purchased the contract of right-hander Aaron Civale from Triple-A Columbus to start Saturday against Detroit.Antonetti said pitcher Carlos Carrasco has been going through treatment and is making progress from the blood disorder that sidelined him earlier this month.
Mon Jun 17 201902:21Indians still hoping Ramirez can rebound
There were plenty of highlights for the Cleveland Indians in their weekend sweep at Detroit: Jake Bauers hit for the cycle, Leonys Martin stole home and Trevor Bauer threw his first career shutout.Another plus for the Indians: Some signs of life from the bat of Jose Ramirez. The Cleveland third baseman had four hits in the series, which may not sound like much but constitutes half of Ramirez's total for the month of June. One of those hits was a triple Friday. He also drove in three runs and scored three times in that three-game sweep."We're looking for reasons to be optimistic," manager Terry Francona said after Saturday's game. "Hopefully he can build on it."One of the American League's top players over the previous three seasons, Ramirez has been having a miserable year at the plate in 2019. His solid series against the Tigers only brought his average to .203, and his slugging percentage is an anemic .301. The Indians are 10 games behind first-place Minnesota in the AL Central. That probably... [More]
Wed Jun 5 201918:32Indians starter Carrasco diagnosed with blood condition
CLEVELAND (AP) — Indians starting pitcher Carlos Carrasco will be sidelined indefinitely because of a recently diagnosed blood condition. The team said Carrasco had been feeling lethargic for weeks, and he is taking a leave of absence to "explore the optimal treatment and recovery options." Carrasco had been scheduled to start Wednesday's game against Minnesota before he was placed on the injured list.Carrasco is the third Indians starter sidelined this season. Two-time Cy Young winner Corey Kluber has been out for more than month with a broken right arm, and Mike Clevinger is nearing a return after being out since early April with a strained back muscle. The Indians gave no specifics on Carrasco's disorder and said any further details will be released at the discretion of him and his family.Three-time defending AL Central champions, the Indians, who entered Wednesday 10½ games behind first-place Minnesota, don't know when the 32-year-old Carrasco will return. However they said in a statement... [More]
