Fri Apr 7 202314:43Alex Colome Signs Deal With White Sox
Free-agent relief pitcher Alex Colome has signed a minor-league contract with the Chicago White Sox. The 34-year-old was released by the Washington Nationals at the end of spring training. He'll look to bounce back after a horrendous 2022 campaign with the Colorado Rockies. Colome posted a career-worst 5.74 ERA in 53 games with the Rockies last season. However, the right-hander was excellent during his time with the White Sox in 2019-2020. During that span. Colome posted a 2.27 ERA with 42 saves in 83 games with the South Siders. The hope is that Colome can return to that level of play once again. For now, the expectation is that he'll head to the minors until the team feels he's ready to pitch.

Sat Jan 28 202312:06Nationals Sign Alexander Colome To Minor-League Deal
The Washington Nationals signed free-agent reliever Alexander Colome to a minor-league deal on Friday that includes an invitation to major-league spring training. The Nationals have had plenty of interest in Colome before, including advanced trade talks with the Chicago White Sox at the 2019 trade deadline. The 34-year-old right-hander was an All-Star back in 2016 with the Tampa Bay Rays when he had a 1.91 ERA and 37 saves, but he's no longer in his prime heading into his 11th big-league campaign. In 47 relief innings for the Colorado Rockies in 2022, he posted a career-worst 5.74 ERA (4.54 FIP), 1.68 WHIP, four saves and 14.9 percent strikeout rate. Colome does have 159 career saves, but he's unlikely to pitch in too many high-leverage situations for the Nats if he makes the team out of spring training.

Thu Jun 9 202222:24Alex Colome Notches Third Save On Thursday
Colorado Rockies pitcher Alex Colome allowed one hit over a scoreless inning to earn the save during Thursday's 4-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. He entered the ninth inning to protect a two-run lead. The 33-year-old tossed a scoreless inning to earn his third save of the season. Colorado's primary closer Daniel Bard was unavailable after pitching in previous back-to-back games. The right-hander hasn't allowed a run over his last 11 1/3 innings and owns a 2.53 ERA across 21 1/3 innings in 2022. Colome is a perfect 3-for-3 in save opportunities, but with the lack of save chances, he is mainly an option in deep-league formats.

Sat Apr 23 202222:25Alex Colome Secures Second Save On Saturday
Colorado Rockies pitcher Alex Colome allowed two runs on two hits and a walk while striking out one across over an inning to secure the save in Saturday's 3-2 win over the Detroit Tigers. He entered the game in the ninth inning to protect a three-run lead. The right-hander surrendered a two-run triple to Austin Meadows, which reduced the Rockies' lead to 3-2. He struck out Harold Castro for the final out to notch his second save of the season. The 33-year-old is in the mix for save chances along with reliever Daniel Bard. Colome has converted both save opportunities while sporting a 6.35 ERA and 2.12 WHIP over 5 2/3 innings in 2022.

Tue Apr 19 202200:34Alex Colome Earns First Save Of Season Monday
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Alex Colome picked up his first save of the season in Monday's 4-1 win over the Phillies. Colome entered the game to pitch the ninth inning with a three-run lead. He Got Bryce Harper to ground out, Nick Castellanos to fly out, walked Rhys Hoskins, and finally got Kyle Schwarber to ground out. The veteran has been a reliable source of saves in the past for fantasy managers, but he seems to be a clear second in terms of closing options for the Rockies behind Daniel Bard. Bard has converted four of five save opportunities to this point and pitched in two of the Rockies' last three games heading into this one. Colome has now converted one of two save opportunities with a 2.65 ERA and just two strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings pitched. He may be worth a roster spot in deep roto leagues for some occasional saves, but fantasy managers should not expect the kind of save numbers from him that they have seen in the past.

Sun Mar 13 202210:12Alex Colome Agrees With Rockies
The Colorado Rockies agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal with free-agent relief pitcher Alex Colome on Saturday night, according to a source. The Rockies added Colome, shortstop Jose Iglesias and outfielder Scott Schebler on a busy Saturday. Colome doesn't have typical closer stuff, but the 33-year-old veteran has 155 career saves over nine major league seasons, and he should immediately be penciled in as the Rockies ninth-inning man for the 2022 season. In 67 relief outings for the Minnesota Twins last year, he had a 4.15 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, 58 strikeouts, 23 walks and 17 saves in 65 innings pitched. Carlos Estevez and Daniel Bard will be his primary competitors for saves in Colorado. Colome will have minimal fantasy value as the expected closer, and Coors Field isn't the most attractive destination for a pitcher of Colome's pedigree.

Fri Nov 5 202114:59Twins Decline Option On Alex Colome
The Minnesota Twins declined a 2022 option on relief pitcher Alex Colome, who will become a free agent. Colome signed on with the Twins last offseason to close, though it was a tale of two halves for the veteran, as his season got off to a disastrous start before he finished the year strong, pitching to a 3.51 ERA in 33 1/3 innings while picking up 15 of his 17 saves. The underlying numbers weren't particularly kind to Colome, though he should still attract some suitors in free agency as a veteran capable of working the late innings. He could have some late-round appeal in saves/holds leagues, depending on where he lands.

Sat Sep 25 202110:10Alex Colome Notches 16th Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome notched the easiest save of the season in Friday's win over the Blue Jays. Colome needed just five pitches to shut the door on Toronto, firing five strikes and picking up a punchout in the process. His rough start to the season is a distant memory now, as the veteran reliever has been one of the more steady fantasy closing options in the second half. Colome should continue to rack up saves for a Twins team that has sneakily been a better squad since the trade deadline.

Thu Sep 23 202110:37Alex Colome Struggles But Picks Up 15th Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome barely managed to pick up his 15th save of the season Wednesday against the Cubs. Colome allowed a leadoff double, induced a strikeout, then surrendered an RBI single. The veteran reliever yielded a walk, RBI groundout, and another single before bearing down to get the third out via a strikeout. Colome has been a dependable closer in the second half of the season- as evidenced by his 2-0 record, 3.07 ERA, and 13 saves in 29 1/3 innings pitched. Fantasy managers can continue to count on Colome for saves, despite the somewhat shaky performance.

Sun Sep 5 202117:15Alex Colome Notches 11th Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome locked up his 11th save of the season in Sunday's win over the Rays. Colome allowed a leadoff single, induced a double play, then proceeded to walk a batter and yield an infield single before getting a fly ball to end the game. The righty has had some down performances here and there but has largely excelled in his second stint as the Twins closer. The key to his success has been his cutter, which has yielded a .195 opponent batting average and a 30.7 percent whiff rate. Colome makes for a solid closing option down the stretch for a revitalized Twins team.

Mon Aug 30 202117:31Alex Colome Records 10th Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome picked up his 10th save of the season Monday against the Tigers. Colome got two quick groundouts but put two baserunners on, one on a throwing error before inducing a flyout to lock up the win for Minnesota. The righty is closing out games with success for the Twins, even though it occurred much later in the season than anyone expected. Colome is 8-for-10 on save chances in August, with just four runs allowed in 12 1/3 innings. It remains to be seen if the Twins can keep up this level of play, though Colome should be considered a solid closing option as long as they do.

Sun Aug 29 202110:54Alex Colome Records Ninth Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome recorded his second consecutive save in Saturday's win over the Brewers. Colome walked one batter but needed just 13 pitches to navigate the frame, locking down the win for Minnesota. The veteran has sprinkled in a couple of shaky performances but has been very solid since being reinstalled as the team's closer in August, pitching to a 3.18 ERA while converting on seven save chances. Colome looks like a solid fantasy closer down the stretch, especially with the Twins playing much better.

Thu Aug 19 202115:08Alex Colome Blows Save Wednesday
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome blew his fifth save of the year Wednesday night against Cleveland, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk in an inning of work. This breaks a streak of nine consecutive scoreless outings for Colome, during which time he's registered five saves. Colome is not your stereotypical closer, with just 38 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings this year, but he is the guy to roster for Minnesota, so fantasy managers in need of every save should keep him rostered even if his lack of whiffs will come back to bite him every now and then.

Wed Aug 11 202118:27Alex Colome Records Seventh Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome notched his seventh save of the season in Wednesday's 1-0 win over the White Sox. For the fifth time this month, Colome was presented with a save chance- and he successfully shut the door for the fifth time, walking one and utilizing 14 pitches to get the job done. The veteran still has yet to allow a run in six August appearances, as he looked much better in his second stint as Minnesota's closer. Colome doesn't have nearly as much upside as other relievers, though the Twins seem to be playing better baseball, which should continue to afford him save chances. He's worth picking up by those who need saves for the stretch run.

Tue Aug 10 202123:35Alex Colome Picks Up Fourth Straight Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome shut the door on his former team, the White Sox, in Tuesday's 4-3 victory. Colome needed just 10 pitches to lock down the win, inducing three easy grounders. The veteran reliever got off to a historically bad start to the season but has been excellent in August as the team's post-trade deadline closer, as he has yet to allow a run while recording four straight saves. Colome still allows too much contact- just a 19.6 percent strikeout rate since he was demoted from the closer role on May 1- though his 55.4 percent groundball rate during that span helps make him a trustworthy option for those in need of immediate saves off the waiver wire.

Sun Aug 8 202120:02Alex Colome Records Fifth Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome notched his fifth save of the season in Sunday's 7-4 win over the Astros. Colome had to work, using 18 pitches, but he shut the door on the Astros, picking up a strikeout in the process. The veteran righty has gotten off to a great start in August, pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings with one hit and one walk allowed while converting all three of his save chances. Concerning Statcast metrics aside, Colome has pitched himself back into fantasy relevance with his last few sharp performances.

Fri Aug 6 202109:14Alex Colome Records Second Straight Save
Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Alex Colome notched his second consecutive save Thursday against the Astros. Colome entered the game in the ninth with two outs after Danny Coulombe served up a two-run homer and induced a lineout to second base to end the contest. The veteran reliever blew a save on July 26, but has gone a perfect 2-for-2 in save chances since. Colome figures to continue seeing such opportunities but has limited value, given that he pitches for the last-place Twins. He also allows too much hard contact, a problem that has plagued him all season.

Sun Mar 7 202119:16Indians minus Ramírez, Reyes after they break virus protocol
The Cleveland Indians have broken COVID-19 protocols for the third time in less than a year, this time costing them third baseman José Ramírez and slugger Franmil Reyes. Manager Terry Francona said Sunday the two players were sent to their Arizona homes while the Indians wait to hear from Major League Baseball when they can rejoin the team. Francona said Reyes, who had a virus-related misstep last season, and Ramirez went out to dinner on Friday following an exhibition game in Mesa against the Chicago Cubs. They reported to the team’s complex on Saturday and were immediately sent away. They did not have contact with any other players or team personnel. “The players themselves actually self-reported that they had made a mistake," Francona said on a Zoom call. When spring training resumed last year after being stopped due to the pandemic, Reyes was forced to quarantine after the team learned via a social media posting that he attended a July 4 party while wearing a mask. A month later, the... [More]
Tue Sep 29 202018:48Giolito, White Sox beat A's 4-1 in wild-card round opener
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Lucas Giolito dazzled in his postseason debut, stymieing the Oakland Athletics through six perfect innings and sending the Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 victory in the opener of their best-of-three wild-card series Tuesday. Giolito (1-0), who pitched a no-hitter against Pittsburgh on Aug. 25, didn’t allow a baserunner to the AL West champions until Tommy La Stella’s single up the middle to start the seventh. Giolito gave up one run on two hits over seven innings, struck out eight and walked one before giving way to Evan Marshall after a stellar 100-pitch outing. Giolito got plenty of support: José Abreu hit a two-run homer and Adam Engel also connected for Chicago against Jesus Luzardo (0-1). Yasmani Grandal homered in the eighth. Alex Colome, Chicago’s third reliever, worked the ninth for a save in the 2-hour, 53-minute game. Now, Oakland must win Game 2 on Wednesday at home to avoid another early playoff exit. The A’s are in the postseason for a third straight year,... [More]
