Thu May 4 202316:11Jeurys Familia Designated For Assignment
The Oakland Athletics designated right-handers Jeurys Familia and Domingo Acevedo for assignment on Thursday. The team also recalled right-handers Rico Garcia, Spencer Patton and Austin Pruitt from Triple-A Las Vegas and optioned right-hander Adam Oller to Las Vegas. Familia has a team-leading two saves on the year, but his 6.39 ERA (7.31 FIP), 2.05 WHIP and 13 walks in 12 2/3 relief innings were just too much for the A's to stomach. The 33-year-old right-hander will now be looking to join another organization as relief depth, but he'll probably have to settle for a minor-league deal elsewhere. Familia has 127 career saves in 12 big-league seasons, but he hasn't had more than two saves in a season since 2018.

Tue Apr 25 202308:04Jeurys Familia Picks Up Another Save Monday
Oakland Athletics reliever Jeurys Familia earned his second save in four games when he closed out Monday's contest against the Los Angeles Angels. He pitched the 10th inning, allowing two runs on two hits while walking one and striking out one in the 11-10 win. Familia has posted a 5.73 ERA with five strikeouts and nine walks over 11 innings this year. Zach Jackson pitched the eighth and ninth inning and should also be in line for his fair of saves, but it looks like the 33-year-old is the leader in the bullpen right now, despite his disappointing results.

Sat Apr 22 202310:25Jeurys Familia Notches Friday's Save
Oakland Athletics right-hander Jeurys Familia picked up his first save of the season on Friday when his club defeated the Texas Rangers 5-4. He threw one inning, allowing no runs or hits while walking one. Familia is off to a poor start in 2023, posting a 5.40 ERA with four punchouts and eight walks across 10 innings. But with Dany Jimenez (shoulder) and Trevor May (anxiety) on the injured list, the A's needed another closer. The 28-year-old Zach Jackson, who pitched the eighth inning Friday, might also be in the mix for save situations, but fantasy managers should expect the longtime Mets reliever to earn his fair share of ninth-inning appearances, assuming he has some amount of success.

Mon Mar 27 202318:23Trevor May, Jeurys Familia, Dany Jimenez Options For Saves
Oakland Athletics relief pitchers Trevor May, Jeurys Familia and Dany Jimenez could all be used in save situations this year, according to manager Mark Kotsay. "I think we'll start out with the mindset that they're all options," Kotsay said. Fantasy managers shouldn't be too interested in the A's closing picture unless you're scrounging for save opportunities in AL-only leagues. May has 12 career saves in eight big-league seasons, Familia has 125 career saves in 11 major-league campaigns and Jimenez picked up his first 11 saves for the A's in 2022 in his second MLB season. This could be a straight committee approach, which makes speculating on any of these relievers dicey in fantasy. Jimenez has the most upside.

Wed Jan 25 202320:13Diamondbacks Sign Jeurys Familia To Minor-League Deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks signed veteran reliever and closer Jeurys Familia to a minor-league deal on Wednesday that includes an invite to major-league spring training. The 33-year-old right-hander was with the Boston Red Sox and Philadelphia Phillies last year and struggled to the tune of a 6.09 ERA (4.94 FIP), 1.80 WHIP, 41 strikeouts and 22 walks in 44 1/3 relief innings. He was much better for the New York Mets in 2021, although he has only one save since 2019. Should Familia make Arizona's Opening Day roster, he will bring some veteran relief depth after recording 125 saves in 11 major-leagues seasons, including a league-high 51 with the Mets back in 2016. Familia won't have any fantasy value in spring drafts.

Wed Sep 14 202200:16Jeurys Familia Designated For Assignment Tuesday
Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Jeurys Familia was designated for assignment after Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Yankees, per Red Sox beat writer Chris Cotillo. Familia took the loss in the game, allowing three runs (two earned) on a hit and three walks in the 10th inning. The veteran struggled this season with both the Phillies and Red Sox, compiling a 6.09 ERA in 44 1/3 innings pitched. The cleared roster spot will likely go to recently-claimed infielder Yu Chang.

Sun Mar 13 202210:01Jeurys Familia Signs With Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies signed free-agent relief pitcher Jeurys Familia to a $6 million deal on Saturday night. The 31-year-old right-hander has plenty of experience in the ninth inning in his 10-year major league career, as he's saved 125 games in 498 2/3 innings pitched. Familia had just one save for the New York Mets in 2021, but he could enter the closing mix with his new club if Corey Knebel falters or gets injured in Philadelphia. In 65 relief appearances last year, Familia had a decent 3.94 ERA and 1.42 WHIP while striking out 72 and walking 27 in 59 1/3 innings. An All-Star back in 2016, the right-hander will be a closing handcuff for Knebel owners in deeper leagues.

Sun Jul 11 202102:09Acua needs season-ending surgery; Braves beat Marlins 5-4
MIAMI (AP) — Braves star Ronald Acuña Jr. will have season-ending surgery to repair a completely torn ACL in his right knee after he was injured during Atlanta’s 5-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Saturday. An MRI showed the severity of the injury and the Braves made the announcement shortly before midnight that their three-time All-Star will be out until at least next year. Acuña landed awkwardly on his right leg after jumping on the warning track in right field to try to catch a drive from Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the fifth inning. The 23-year-old slammed into the outfield wall and crumbled on the warning track, immediately grabbing his right knee while Chisholm sprinted out an inside-the-park homer. The 23-year-old Acuña did not put any weight on his right leg and had to be helped to a cart before being taken from the field. Freddie Freeman had a two-run homer and an RBI single, while Dansby Swanson and Austin Riley ripped doubles as the first three Braves reached base off All-Star pitcher... [More]

(AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 31st homer in the third, and Juan Lagares ended it with a two-run double in the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Angels’ 6-5 comeback victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. After Los Angeles loaded the bases on a walk and two short singles, Lagares doubled to the gap in right-center, extending the Angels’ winning streak to five games. Raisel Iglesias (6-3) got the win. Wed May 19 202102:48Turnbull gets MLB's 5th no-hitter, Tigers beat Mariners 5-0
SEATTLE (AP) — Spencer Turnbull pitched the fifth no-hitter in the majors this season, sending the Detroit Tigers to a 5-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Turnbull, who led the big leagues with 17 losses two years ago, had never gone more than seven innings in any of his previous 49 starts over three seasons. The five no-hitters through May 18 match the 1917 season for the most in baseball history by that date. Turnbull’s no-hitter was the eighth in Tigers history and their first since Justin Verlander’s in Toronto on May 7, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander got a great defensive play from third baseman Jeimer Candelario in the seventh inning and then struck out Mitch Haniger in the ninth to end it. Turnbull (3-2) struck out nine and walked two. Turnbull threw 117 pitches, 77 for strikes. Haniger was the only batter to hit the ball hard enough to threaten a base hit. Wed May 12 202117:36Dark Knight returns: Harvey, Orioles lose to Mets 7-1
NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey walked onto the Citi Field mound for the first time in 3 years, 9 days, his brown eyes darting around the stadium where he became a star and left in ignominy. “There’s been so many ups and downs here at this ballpark and with this organization that I didn’t really know what to expect,” he said later. “What the fans gave me out there was pretty incredible. I was holding back tears.” Harvey received three standing ovations, but his outing for Baltimore was no better than his final performances for New York. Pitching against against the Mets for the first time, Harvey allowed Kevin Pillar’s two-run triple in a three-run second inning that carried New York over the Orioles 7-1 on Wednesday for a seven-game winning streak. Wearing orange and black instead of blue and orange, Harvey (3-3) gave up a season-high seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. His ERA rose from 3.60 to 4.81 as the last-place Orioles lost for the fifth time... [More]
