Mon Apr 2 201220:47Rule 5 pick Cruz makes Astros' roster
Rule 5 pick Rhiner Cruz has made the Astros' Opening Day roster.
Cruz, who was selected from the Mets in December's Rule 5 Draft, has a 6.75 ERA and 10/10 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings this spring. Not very impressive, but he throws hard and it's not like the Astros have much to lose by sticking him in the bullpen for a little while. The 25-year-old right-hander must be kept all season or passed through waivers and offered back to the Mets for $25,000.

Mon Mar 5 201216:39Astros' Rhiner Cruz overwhelmed in debut
Rule 5 pick Rhiner Cruz failed to retire any of the five Braves he faced in a loss Monday.
One batter did reach on an error, but Cruz allowed two hits and walked two. He was charged with four runs, three of which were earned. Cruz was the first overall pick in December's Rule 5 draft, but the former Mets farmhand has little working in his favor outside of a big fastball. The Astros have little to lose by stashing him in their pen anyway, but he's a real long shot to develop.
