MIAMI (AP) — Even by the Dodgers' high-scoring standards, Tuesday night was extraordinary.Rookie Will Smith achieved another milestone in the storybook start to his big league career with his first two-homer game, and Los Angeles twice hit back-to-back homers to pound the Miami Marlins 15-1.Cody Bellinger tied a career high with his 39th home run and Justin Turner hit his 20th for the Dodgers, who totaled six homers and a season-high 13 extra-base hits — but no singles until there were two out in the ninth. The six homers tied the record for most by a team at pitcher-friendly Marlins Park, which opened in 2012."It was as good a night as we've had all year, and that's saying a lot," manager Dave Roberts said. "Just a relentless approach."Rookie Dustin May (1-1), making his third career start, earned his first win by allowing one run in 5 2/3 innings. Four relievers, including backup catcher Russell Martin, pitched the final 3 1/3 innings to complete a four-hitter.The Dodgers increased their... [More]

JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — Dan Straily was released Monday by the Miami Marlins, who will give the pitcher $1,209,677 in termination pay rather than his $5 million salary. The 30-year old right-hander was 15-15 in two seasons with the Marlins, who acquired him from Cincinnati in January 2017. He was limited to 23 starts last year, when he went on the disabled list twice because of forearm and oblique strains.Straily had a 5.94 ERA over 16 2/3 innings in five spring training appearances. All five members of the Marlins starting rotation are 27 and younger."We're going to be built with our starting pitching," Miami president of baseball operations Michael Hill said Monday. Sun Mar 10 201916:00Marlins searching for answers to Chen's road woes
JUPITER, Fla. (AP) — The "homer" could follow the "opener" into baseball's lexicon.Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly says he'd consider rearranging some of pitcher Wei-Yin Chen's starting dates during the regular season should last year's atrocious home/road splits continue."If we're seeing the same type trend then I think if you have a chance to schedule it — if you have an off-day and you can skip a guy and it lines him up for two home starts instead of one and back in Philly, or wherever it would be — I think you look at it," Mattingly said.Late last season Mattingly did elect to skip a scheduled Chen start in Philadelphia to have him pitch at home the following day.Rather effective at spacious Marlins Park last season where he pitched to a 5-3 record and a 1.62 ERA, Chen became a completely different pitcher on the road, losing nine of 10 decisions while posting a 9.27 ERA."Last year, we're hoping, was an anomaly as far as the road and home," Mattingly said. "He's a flyball guy. When... [More]
Sun Mar 10 201900:20Harper walks twice in Phils debut, draws 4-man outfield
CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Bryce Harper drew big cheers, a pair of walks and a most unusual defense in his spring training debut for the Philadelphia Phillies. Both times the slugger with the biggest contract in baseball came to the plate, the Toronto Blue Jays shifted to a four-man outfield, moved the shortstop on the other side of second base and gave the left-handed hitting Harper a wide-open left side of the infield."I've never seen that. That's intense," Harper said, adding he hopes teams don't do that to him often. "If they start playing ball like that, it's definitely different."Phillies manager Gabe Kapler didn't want to discuss shift strategy but shared his advice for Harper."Hit a lot of homers, drive the ball like you're capable of, do exactly what you always do, be Bryce Harper," Kapler said.Harper drew a loud ovation when he walked up to the plate to Will Smith's theme song from "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air."Wearing No. 3 on his uniform, eye black under his eyes and a white armband... Mon Mar 4 201919:19Dodgers ace Kershaw could miss opening day start
Clayton Kershaw might not be on the mound when the two-time NL champion Los Angeles Dodgers start the season. The lefty ace is working his way back from shoulder soreness that caused him to shut down his spring training.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said "that's fair" when asked Monday whether Kershaw might miss the opener March 28 against Arizona at Dodger Stadium."There's just way too much importance put on the opening-day roster. The No. 1 thing is for him to be ready and to feel confident physically and mentally," Roberts said, "and when that is, it is."Kershaw has made a franchise-record eight consecutive opening day starts, and was tabbed to do so again when the Dodgers arrived in Arizona. But a couple days later, the three-time Cy Young Award winner had some shoulder soreness that caused him to halt his throwing program. Mon Oct 1 201813:20Lots of losing for Jeter in 1st year as Marlins as owner
MIAMI (AP) — Derek Jeter played on a winning team in each of his 20 seasons as a shortstop, which made his first year as an owner a test of patience. He admits he failed.Jeter's Miami Marlins went 63-98 — a new, humbling experience for him, but nothing new for the troubled franchise. By finishing with the worst record in the National League, the Marlins endured their ninth consecutive losing season, the longest such streak in the majors.Their playoff drought is now at 15 years."I've been preaching patience, and finding out I don't have much of it," Jeter said. "It's an organization that had been broken, and we have to fix that. I'd like that to happen overnight. But we have a lot we need to improve on."There were signs of progress. Jeter said the most positive development was the improvement made by prospects, and initial showings by 2018 draft picks.Several young major leaguers took steps toward becoming part of the long-term rebuilding plan, including pitchers Sandy Alcantara, Pablo Lopez,...
