Mon Nov 6 202313:47Cubs Pick Up Yan Gomes' 2024 Option
The Chicago Cubs exercised catcher Yan Gomes' $6 million option for the 2024 campaign over the weekend, according to a source. Gomes will return next year for a third season in the Windy City. The 36-year-old veteran backstop is much more valuable in real life for the Cubs than in fantasy. The Brazilian saw more playing time in 2023 with Willson Contreras going to St. Louis, and he finished the year hitting a respectable .267 (102-for-382) with 10 home runs, 20 doubles, two triples, 63 RBI and 44 runs scored in 116 games played in Chicago. If the Cubs don't upgrade at the position, Gomes will be in line to open the 2024 regular season as the team's primary backstop while being spelled by Miguel Amaya.

Mon Jul 3 202312:32Yan Gomes Takes A Seat Monday
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes will be rested on Monday as the team takes on the Milwaukee Brewers on the road. Gomes gets a deserved day of rest after catching all 10 innings in the team's extra-inning loss to the Cleveland Guardians in Sunday's series finale. The 35-year-old Brazilian backstop has been decent at the plate this year with a .265 average (44-for-166) with seven home runs, three doubles, 24 RBI and 25 runs scored in 50 games (181 plate appearances), but a three-headed platoon at the position in Chicago has hurt him. Tucker Barnhart will do the catching on Monday and will hit in the nine-hole against Brewers right-hander Julio Teheran. The Cubs have also mixed in Miguel Amaya behind the plate recently.

Fri May 26 202312:35Patrick Wisdom, Yan Gomes Sitting Friday
Chicago Cubs third baseman Patrick Wisdom and catcher Yan Gomes are both taking the day off on Friday against the Cincinnati Reds. Wisdom will now be on the bench for the third time in the last five games because he's in a 1-for-21 slump currently, which includes 14 strikeouts. The 31-year-old right-handed slugger is now hitting only .214 (31-for-145) on the year, but he has added 12 home runs and 23 RBI. The 35-year-old Gomes is getting a regular day of rest. In limited playing time, Gomes has been solid with a .290 average (29-for-100) with six home runs and 19 RBI in 28 games. Miles Mastrobuoni is starting at third and hitting eighth on Friday, while Tucker Barnhart is behind the plate and batting in the nine-hole against Reds right-hander Hunter Greene.

Wed May 10 202308:33Yan Gomes Almost Ready To Return
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes (head) will be activated off the injured list soon, according to MLB.com. The 35-year-old was placed on the IL in early May after suffering concussion-like symptoms, but he's resumed baseball activities and went through a pregame workout on Tuesday. Gomes was having a resurgence at the plate before his injury, slashing .294/.310/.529 with five homers, 10 runs, 13 RBI, and one stolen base over 19 games. When he does return, the veteran will take back the starting catcher role from Miguel Amaya and try to keep providing solid production.

Fri May 5 202312:27Yan Gomes, Brandon Hughes Making Progress
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes (concussion) is doing some conditioning and light baseball activities on Friday, while relief pitcher Brandon Hughes (knee) will play catch. Relief pitcher Codi Heuer (elbow) is scheduled to throw one inning in a minor-league rehab outing for Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. If Gomes can avoid any concussion symptoms, he could be activated from the injured list when he's eligible on May 9. Hughes has already been on the injured list twice this year with a nagging knee injury, but the Cubs will likely play things extra cautiously with Hughes this time. Heuer will be pitching in his first game action this weekend since having Tommy John surgery last March.

Wed May 3 202318:41Yan Gomes Placed On Concussion List
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes (concussion) has been placed on the 7-day concussion list on Wednesday. The veteran catcher hasn't played since exiting Monday's game after getting hit in the head by a backswing. The team isn't going to take any chances here with Gomes. It's worth noting that Gomes hasn't been officially diagnosed with a concussion. Regardless, he'll miss some time, so Tucker Barnhart figures to get a majority of the starts behind the plate. He'll serve as the catcher and bat ninth against right-hander Jake Irvin on Wednesday. In a corresponding move, right-hander Javier Assad has been recalled to give the Cubs an extra arm.

Tue May 2 202308:52Yan Gomes Not In Concussion Protocol Yet
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes (head) is not officially in concussion protocol, according to Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune. The veteran backstop left Monday's game against the Washington Nationals early after a backswing hit him in the head. Gomes should be considered day-to-day and will likely still miss some time even if he avoids the injured list. In his absence, Tucker Barnhart will get the majority of starts behind the plate. The light hitting 32-year-old is slashing .212/.250/.242 through 13 games with no home runs, one run, and two RBI. Fantasy managers can lay off Barnhart in favor of catchers with a little more thump in their bat.

Mon May 1 202321:21Yan Gomes Leaves Monday With Possible Head Injury
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes left his team's Monday game against the Washington Nationals with a possible head injury. While behind the plate in the first inning, Gomes was hit on the helmet on Jeimer Candelario's backswing. Gomes initially stuck around and logged an at-bat in the second inning, but he left shortly after striking out in that plate appearance. He will most certainly go for a concussion test and could be out for some time if he is shown to have suffered a head injury. Look for the Cubs to update his status upon the conclusion of Monday's game.

Fri Apr 7 202314:21Yan Gomes To Sit Out On Friday
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Texas Rangers. The veteran catcher will get the day off for rest purposes. In his absence, Tucker Barnhart will cover behind the plate and bat ninth versus righty Nathan Eovaldi. The expectation is that these two are going to split up the catching duties in Chicago this season. Neither of them are going to have great fantasy appeal.

Tue May 24 202218:28Yan Gomes Scratched With Oblique Tightness
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes (oblique) was a late scratch from the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Cincinnati Reds. P.J. Higgins will now be catching for the game. Gomes is dealing with left oblique tightness. Fellow Cubs catcher Willson Contreras (hamstring) is also hampered by an injury. He suffered a right hamstring strain on Saturday and hasn't played since. If Gomes' injury lingers, then we could see Higgins wind up with a good amount of playing time this week.

Sun Apr 10 202214:12Yan Gomes Starts Behind The Plate On Sunday
Chicago Cubs catcher Yan Gomes will move into the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs have decided to give Willson Contreras the day off. That is probably a smart move considering Contreras has one hit in his first nine plate appearances of the season. Gomes will be making his team debut with Chicago during Sunday's contest. He'll be behind the plate and bat eighth versus righty Freddy Peralta. The veteran catcher is a solid addition to the roster, but isn't a favorable streaming option for Sunday's slate.

Tue Nov 30 202113:45Cubs Reportedly Sign Yan Gomes
According to a tweet from Sports Grid's Craig Mish, the Chicago Cubs have agreed to a two-year deal with free-agent catcher Yan Gomes. Per Mish, the contract is worth $13 million. Gomes hit .252 with a .301 on-base percentage and 14 home runs in 375 plate appearances last season for the Washington Nationals and Oakland Athletics. He'll give the Cubs another established catching option alongside longtime starter Willson Contreras. Contreras hit .237 with a .340 on-base percentage, 21 home runs, and five stolen bases in 483 plate appearances last season. Even with Gomes reportedly signing, Contreras still looks like the starter if Chicago doesn't trade him, although that's purely speculative.

Thu Sep 16 202113:41Yan Gomes Isn't In Thursday's Lineup
Oakland Athletics catcher Yan Gomes is on the bench for Thursday's matchup with the Kansas City Royals and left-handed starter Daniel Lynch. Gomes is batting .255 with a .299 on-base percentage and 13 home runs in 331 plate appearances this season. Instead, it'll be Sean Murphy starting behind the plate against the Royals. Murphy is batting seventh and could be worth a look for fantasy managers in search of streaming help at catcher. In 416 plate appearances this season, the 26-year-old is batting .218 with a .310 on-base percentage and 16 home runs.

Thu Sep 9 202111:10Yan Gomes Collects RBI In Win Versus ChiSox
Oakland Athletics catcher Yan Gomes went 2-for-4 with an RBI in a win versus the White Sox on Wednesday. Gomes knocked in Mark Canha with a single in the third inning as the former National has been a nice boost for an A's team that has been scuffling lately. Gomes' fantasy appeal isn't as strong, however; Sean Murphy is also in the mix and manager Bob Melvin has been giving both catchers playing time, which has led to neither Gomes nor Murphy being fantasy relevant in one-catcher leagues. Gomes is slugging .436 on the season, though, so he's a solid option in two-catcher fantasy leagues despite fewer at-bats than most starting catchers in baseball.

Sat Sep 4 202113:06Yan Gomes Gets Day Off Saturday
Oakland Athletics catcher Yan Gomes is not in Saturday's lineup against the Toronto Blue Jays, according to MLB.com. Gomes has started five of the last six games, so manager Bob Melvin is likely just giving him a breather. Sean Murphy will do the catching duties in his place. Traded from the Nationals at the deadline, Gomes is slashing .260/.301/.441 with 12 HRs, 48 RBI, and 38 runs over 83 games. He's been a good option at catcher the entire year and should be rostered in most leagues. Fantasy managers should change their lineup accordingly.

Tue Aug 24 202111:00Yan Gomes Homers Again In Loss To Seattle
Oakland Athletics catcher Yan Gomes went 1-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in a loss to the Mariners on Monday. Gomes took starter Marco Gonzales deep in the fourth inning for his 12th homer of the season, and third since being traded to the A's on July 31. Gomes would also drive in a run with a groundout. The veteran backstop has been a productive player this season, but he's been splitting time with Sean Murphy behind the plate in Oakland. Murphy was the DH on Monday, so manager Bob Melvin is trying to get both catchers in the lineup, but both Murphy and Gomes have their fantasy appeal capped by each other. Gomes and Murphy are must-start catchers in two-catcher leagues, but managers in one-catcher formats should seek a backstop getting more regular at-bats.

Sat Aug 21 202110:57Yan Gomes Collects Two Hits In Win Versus Giants
Oakland Athletics catcher Yan Gomes went 2-for-4 with a run scored in a win over the Giants on Friday night. Gomes has been a solid addition for the A's at the trade deadline as he's 10-for-40 with two doubles and eight RBI thus far with his new club. Unfortunately for fantasy managers, he's not quite getting enough playing time to justify a roster spot in one-catcher fantasy leagues. Gomes and Sean Murphy have been splitting time behind the plate and it doesn't appear manager Bob Melvin wants to commit to one starting catcher. Gomes is batting .267 this season with a .453 slugging percentage so he's got upside in two-catcher formats despite fewer at-bats than most backstops.

Mon Aug 2 202110:26Yan Gomes Launches Homer In Oakland Debut
Oakland Athletics catcher Yan Gomes made a good first impression on his new club by mashing a two-run homer to help beat the Angels on Sunday. Gomes added an RBI single in the contest and helped rookie pitcher Daulton Jefferies get past some early jitters and earn the win in the contest. Gomes, a veteran catcher with World Series experience with the Nationals, is a perfect fit for the A's, but his fantasy appeal is limited playing behind Sean Murphy. Gomes is a good hitter for a backup catcher and is usually a solid punt-play in DFS when he's in the lineup, but he won't get enough playing time to justify a roster spot in redraft leagues as long as Murphy is healthy.

Sun Aug 1 202116:20Josh Harrison, Yan Gomes Making Oakland Debut Sunday
Oakland Athletics infielder Josh Harrison and catcher Yan Gomes are in the starting lineup on Sunday for their team debut after being acquired from the Nationals on Friday. Harrison is getting the start at second base and batting seventh against the Angels, while Gomes is starting behind the plate and hitting sixth in the order. Harrison has been hot at the plate over his last 15 games, slashing .368/.419/.667 with one homer, seven RBI and 10 runs scored. Meanwhile, over 10 games in July, Gomes is slashing .333/.412/.667 with two home runs, eight RBI and six runs scored. Both of them should be started in deeper formats against the rookie Reid Detmers.

Sat Jul 31 202102:45Deal 'em up! Scherzer, Turner, Bryant, Báez and Berríos move
Max Scherzer and Trea Turner wearing Dodger blue, Kris Bryant heading to the Golden Gate. Javier Báez joining the Mets, Craig Kimbrel crossing town to the White Sox, José Berríos moving north of the border. Now this truly was an All-Star trade deadline day. After a run-up that saw the likes of Nelson Cruz, Anthony Rizzo, Joey Gallo and Adam Frazier swapped, even more big names changed teams during a whirlwind Friday. From contenders boosting their roster to the also-ran Chicago Cubs and Washington Nationals gutting theirs, this was a monster day for moves. “They all feel busy, but today was nonstop,†said Cleveland president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti, who made three trades. “We executed a number of trades but there were probably at least another dozen other ones that we contemplated seriously at different points in time and exchanged different ideas,†he said. Several playoff chasers pursued arms, with Toronto landing Berríos, Philadelphia getting Kyle Gibson and Ian Kennedy,... [More]
