Fri Aug 25 202316:22James McCann Back For The Orioles
Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (hand) is back behind the plate doing the catching and is hitting sixth for the Orioles against the visiting Colorado Rockies and left-hander Kyle Freeland on Friday. McCann will return to action after missing the team's last few games due to a bruised left hand. The 33-year-old veteran backstop has done very little in just 151 at-bats in his first season in Baltimore, but he is hitting a strong .375 (18-for-48) with a home run, seven doubles, 13 RBI, two stolen bases and nine runs scored in 16 games (15 starts) since the All-Star break. Although three of McCann's four home runs on the year have come against left-handed pitching, he's gone just 19-for-88 (.216) against southpaw in 2023.

Tue Mar 28 202310:29James McCann Likely To Open On Injured List
Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (oblique) missed the final seven games of spring training after feeling soreness in his left oblique in a March 20 Grapefruit League game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The 32-year-old backstop called the injury "minor," but general manager Mike Elias said it's "likely" that McCann will begin the 2023 season on the injured list. He spent almost a month on the injured list last year with the New York Mets with a left oblique strain, although he said his current soreness is on the same side but in a different area. McCann will be backing up young catcher Adley Rutschman when he's healthy, and Anthony Bemboom should serve as Baltimore's backup to open the season with McCann on the shelf.

Sun Mar 26 202312:13James McCann Might Not Be Ready For Opening Day
Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (oblique) hasn't played in a spring game since Monday due to discomfort in his left oblique, which he noticed while swinging at a pitch. McCann was on the injured list last year with the New York Mets after being diagnosed with a strained left oblique. Baltimore is keeping him out of Sunday's Grapefruit League game, and they don't know if he'll be ready for Opening Day on Thursday against Boston. McCann is hopeful he can be on the Opening Day roster, but the O's may play it safe. If McCann begins on the injured list, Anthony Bemboom would break camp with the team for the second straight season. When healthy, McCann will back up starter Adley Rutschman while getting some starts at first base and DH against left-handed pitching.

Sat Mar 25 202322:46James McCann Sidelined With Soreness In His Side
Baltimore Orioles catcher James McCann (side) has been experiencing soreness in his side and has been out of the lineup since March 20th. Manager Brandon Hyde noted that it is simply a precaution and McCann should return in the next couple of days. The 32-year-old was acquired from the New York Mets over the offseason in exchange for cash and minor-leaguer Luis De La Cruz. McCann missed considerable time last season after breaking his hamate bone, followed by an oblique injury that sidelined him for a month. When on the field, McCann slashed a dreadful .195/.257/.282 but only made 191 plate appearances. If he can stay healthy this coming season, McCann is a plus-defender and can possibly tap into some complimentary power.

Thu Dec 22 202213:14Orioles Acquire James McCann From The Mets
The Baltimore Orioles acquired catcher James McCann and cash considerations from the New York Mets on Wednesday night in exchange for a player to be named later, according to sources. The Mets are covering $19 million of the $24.3 million that is still owed to McCann over the next two seasons. In Baltimore, the 32-year-old backstop will serve as the backup to up-and-coming catcher Adley Rutschman, who just completed his first MLB season for the O's. McCann's already cratered fantasy value will take even more of a hit with sporadic playing time in the American League East. In his second season with the Mets in 2022, McCann only played in 61 games due to injury and slashed a poor .195/.257/.282 with a .538 OPS, three home runs, 18 RBI, 19 runs scored and three stolen bases in 191 plate appearances.

Fri Aug 19 202216:12James McCann Resting On Friday
New York Mets catcher James McCann is getting the day off on Friday against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies. It's just a regular day off for the 32-year-old backstop, who has played in just 39 games for the Mets this year due to injuries. He's gone 20-for-111 (.180) with two home runs, 13 RBI, 10 runs scored and two stolen bases. Michael Perez is behind the dish on Friday and is batting ninth against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. This will be Perez's fourth game with the Mets, and he's still searching for his first hit. In 39 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2022, he hit just .150/.209/.318 with six home runs, 11 RBI, eight runs scored and one stolen base. You can find better DFS options at the catching position.

Sat Jun 25 202213:13James McCann Returns To The Lineup On Saturday
New York Mets catcher James McCann (wrist) is making his return to the starting lineup for Saturday's game against left-hander Trevor Rogers and the Miami Marlins. McCann was activated from the 10-day injured list on Friday. However, he was held out of Friday's game as Tomas Nido served as the team's catcher for the contest. McCann was on the shelf for about a month and a half after fracturing his left hamate bone. The team optioned fellow catcher Patrick Mazeika to Triple-A on Friday, so McCann and Nido will be the team's only catchers going forward.

Sat Jun 4 202221:28James McCann On Track To Return In Early July
According to New York Mets manager Buck Showalter, catcher James McCann (wrist) is about a month away from returning. He will begin taking dry swings within the next couple of days and is on track to return in about a month. The 31-year-old has been sidelined since May 11 with a fracture of the hamate bone in his left wrist. He underwent surgery and was initially expected to miss six weeks. McCann wasn't productive before injuring his wrist, slashing .196/.266/.286 with a homer and six RBI over 64 plate appearances in 2022. While McCann is sidelined, Tomas Nido and Patrick Mazeika will continue to handle catching duties for the Mets.

Fri May 13 202215:54James McCann To Undergo Wrist Surgery
New York Mets catcher James McCann (wrist) was diagnosed with a fracture of the hamate bone in his left wrist on Friday. He will undergo surgery for the fracture and is expected to miss about six weeks. The team placed him on the 10-day injured list on Friday and recalled catcher Patrick Mazeika from Triple-A. Tomas Nido should serve as the team's primary catcher while McCann is out with Mazeika working in a backup role.

Thu May 12 202210:54James McCann Out With Sore Wrist
New York Mets catcher James McCann (wrist) is dealing with a sore left wrist, which is why he's not in the lineup on Thursday against the Washington Nationals. According to manager Buck Showalter, McCann's injury is "manageable," and he should be back in the lineup on Friday. It's the second straight day that the 31-year-old has been on the bench. With McCann out again, Tomas Nido will do the catching and is hitting ninth on Thursday against Nationals right-hander Joan Adon. McCann is off to a rough start in his second year with the Mets, hitting just .196 with one home run, six RBI, five runs scored and one stolen base in his first 21 games. You can find better DFS catching options than Nido on Thursday.

Sat Mar 26 202210:32Starling Marte, James McCann Expected Back Tuesday
New York Mets manager Buck Showalter expects outfielder Starling Marte (oblique) and catcher James McCann (back) to get back in a Grapefruit League game by Tuesday or earlier. Marte has been dealing with a sore left oblique since early in camp, but he started hitting off a tee earlier this week and played in a minor league game on Wednesday. McCann has been out for a week with back tightness. As long as both players don't have setbacks when they return to game action, they'll have a week to get ready for Opening Day. Marte, 33, is still plenty valuable in fantasy for his speed, but fantasy managers should expect some batting average regression in 2022. McCann was an All-Star a few years ago with the White Sox, but he's fallen off since and will be a backup catcher target in drafts.

Wed Mar 23 202210:59James McCann Scratched With Back Tightness
New York Mets catcher James McCann (back) was scratched from the spring training game on Tuesday when his back tightened up. McCann missed time last year with back issues, but manager Buck Showalter said he would have played if it was a regular season game. It doesn't sound like the Mets believe the 31-year-old's injury is that serious, but we'll keep an eye on McCann through the rest of the week. In his first year in New York in 2021, McCann hit .232/.294/.349 with 10 home runs, 46 RBI and 29 runs in 412 plate appearances over 121 games. He was an All-Star in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox, but McCann is currently ranked as RotoBaller's No. 23 fantasy backstop entering the 2022 season.

Fri Oct 1 202114:12James McCann Scores Twice, Drives In Two
New York Mets catcher James McCann went 1-for-3 at the plate with a double, a walk, two RBI, and two runs scored in Thursday's 12-3 win over the Miami Marlins, marking the rare strong game for him. McCann has struggled to a .638 OPS with 10 homers, one steal, 28 runs, and 45 RBI in his first season with New York, well below what expectations were for him. He should not be drafted in one-catcher fantasy leagues come 2022.

Sun Sep 12 202109:49James McCann Belts 10th Homer Of Season
New York Mets catcher James McCann went 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, three RBI, two runs scored, and a walk in the Mets 8-7 loss to the Yankees on Saturday evening. Despite the big night, it has been a disappointing season for McCann following his 2020 campaign in which he posted a .289/.360/.536 slash line to go with seven home runs and 15 RBI in just 111 plate appearances with the Chicago White Sox. On the season, McCann owns a .240/.303/.368 slash line, with 10 home runs, 40 RBI, and 24 runs scored in 105 games (329 at-bats). McCann does not hold much fantasy value and, in that regard, can be left on the bench and/or waiver wires in most formats at this point.

Sat Sep 4 202112:10James McCann Activated, Will Start Game Two Of Doubleheader
The New York Mets activated catcher James McCann (back) from the injured list on Saturday, and he's expected to start the second game of the doubleheader against the Washington Nationals, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. McCann landed on the IL on August 20 after experiencing back spasms. It's been a disappointing first season with the Mets, with him slashing .240/.303/.357 with nine home runs in 99 games, after posting a .808 OPS across the previous two seasons. There isn't much value in McCann for fantasy managers, and he can be left on the bench amid his return.

Fri Aug 20 202121:43James McCann Placed On 10-Day IL Friday
New York Mets catcher James McCann (back) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday with lower back spasms, with the move made retroactive to August 17, according to Justin Toscano of NorthJersey.com. In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled relief pitcher Geoff Hartlieb from Triple-A Syracuse. McCann has had a disappointing year at the plate so far, slashing .240/.303/.357 with nine home runs, 35 RBI and 22 runs scored over 99 games. At this point he can be dropped in all formats.

Thu Aug 19 202120:20James McCann Not Starting On Thursday
New York Mets catcher James McCann (back) isn't starting on Thursday against the Dodgers, although there is a slight chance he could be available in some capacity, according to manager Luis Rojas. McCann continues to deal with back spasms, and while the team is hoping he avoids a trip to the injured list, it remains a possibility, nonetheless. Patrick Mazeika will serve as the backstop once again after he was called up from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. The 27-year-old is batting .276 throughout 18 games with the big club this season, so DFS enthusiasts should consider him a value option with upside against Los Angeles.

Wed Aug 18 202114:01James McCann Remains Out Of The Lineup
New York Mets catcher James McCann (back) remains out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the San Francisco Giants. He was a late scratch on Tuesday due to back spasms. Clearly, McCann still isn't feeling 100 percent healthy and will sit out another contest. Patrick Mazeika will draw another start at catcher and bat eighth versus right-hander Anthony DeSclafani. Fantasy managers can go ahead and ignore Mazeika. He doesn't offer enough upside with the bat especially in this tough matchup.

Tue Aug 17 202122:04James McCann Scratched From Lineup
New York Mets catcher James McCann was taken out of Tuesday's lineup after he was originally slotted to catch and bat seventh. The reason for his omission is unknown, but more news should come later on. Patrick Mazeika will catch and bat seventh in his place. On the year, he's slashing .240/.303/.357 with nine home runs. It's been a disappointing season after posting a .789 and .896 OPS in 2019 and 2020, respectively. Fantasy managers should stay tuned for more information.

Sat Aug 7 202121:17James McCann Hits Ninth Home Run On Saturday
New York Mets catcher James McCann went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in the Mets 5-3 loss to the Phillies on Saturday. The homer was McCann's ninth of the season, in what has been a disappointing year for the backstop. Much like the rest of the Mets struggling offense, McCann has just five hits over his last 24 at-bats (.208). Overall, McCann is batting just .246/.310/.372 with nine homers and 34 RBI in 92 games. Regularly batting at the bottom of the Mets lineup, McCann's fantasy upside is significantly limited. In one-catcher formats, McCann is, at best, a weekly streaming option where managers have lost their primary catchers due to injury.
