Cabrera appeared in just 12 games with Double-A Altoona after coming over from the Tigers on a waiver claim, but it seems the Pirates saw enough to rule him out as a key piece for the future. In 119 games overall at the Double-A level in 2014, the 25-year-old Cabrera hit .273/.325/.364 with six homers, 52 RBI and a 36:43 K:BB.

The Tigers dropped Cabrera from the 40-man roster to make room for starting pitcher Buck Farmer, but the catcher was quickly scooped up by the Pirates. The 24-year-old Cabrera was slashing .277/.329/.358 with five homers and 47 RBI for Double-A Erie and doesn't project to be more than a backup at the major league level.
