CHICAGO -- Madison Bumgarner emerged victorious in a late-season meeting of ace pitchers in a playoff atmosphere Saturday at Wrigley Field.Bumgarner (14-8) struck out 10 and allowed two runs in six innings as the San Francisco Giants held off the Chicago Cubs 3-2.Bumgarner got the better of Jake Arrieta and the Cubs, who own the best record in baseball. Cabrera is getting his first major league start Sunday, batting eighth.

Cabrera had a reasonably good season at Triple-A Louisville this season, and this start is a bit of a reward for his efforts, plus a reflection that the Reds played a doubleheader Saturday.

Cabrera was recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.

Cabrera has turned in a solid season a Triple-A, slashing .290/.343/.353 with 35 RBI in 86 games. The 25-year-old will make his first trip up to the majors, and he figures to slot in as the Reds' third catcher.

Cabrera was released by the Pirates on Monday.

The Pirates took a flier on Cabrera in August, grabbing him on a waiver claim from the Tigers, but he failed to impress in his short time with the club and was ultimately designated for assignment. After passing through waivers unclaimed, Cabrera, a .283/.350/.371 hitter at the Double-A level, is free to seek an opportunity with another organization.

The Pirates designated Cabrera for assignment Thursday.

Cabrera appeared in just 12 games with Double-A Altoona after coming over from the Tigers on a waiver claim, but it seems the Pirates saw enough to rule him out as a key piece for the future. In 119 games overall at the Double-A level in 2014, the 25-year-old Cabrera hit .273/.325/.364 with six homers, 52 RBI and a 36:43 K:BB.

Cabrera was claimed off waivers by the Pirates on Wednesday, MLB.com's Jason Beck reports.

The Tigers dropped Cabrera from the 40-man roster to make room for starting pitcher Buck Farmer, but the catcher was quickly scooped up by the Pirates. The 24-year-old Cabrera was slashing .277/.329/.358 with five homers and 47 RBI for Double-A Erie and doesn't project to be more than a backup at the major league level.

Neither player had a chance to crack the big league roster. Cabrera was acquired from the Pirates over the winter in the Andy Oliver deal.
