Mon Jan 2217:35Collin McHugh Announces His Retirement
Veteran right-hander Collin McHugh announced his retirement from professional baseball on Monday on his Instagram account. The 36-year-old spent his final season in the big leagues in 2023 with the Atlanta Braves, recording a 4.30 ERA (4.09 FIP), 1.57 WHIP, 22 walks and 47 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings over 41 appearances (one start) during the regular season. In his 11 seasons in the big leagues, he had a 3.72 ERA (3.58 FIP) and 1.23 WHIP with a save and a 23.3 percent strikeout rate in 992 2/3 total innings over 346 appearances (127 starts) with the Braves, Houston Astros, New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays and Colorado Rockies. His two best seasons came in 2014-15 with the Astros, when he went a combined 30-16 with a 3.39 ERA (3.38 FIP) and 1.17 WHIP with 94 walks and 328 strikeouts in 57 starts.

Tue Sep 19 202312:37Collin McHugh Starting Rehab Assignment Tuesday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. In addition to McHugh, right-handers Nick Anderson (shoulder) and Daysbel Hernandez (forearm) are starting their rehab assignments with Gwinnett. The Braves also reinstated reliever Jesse Chavez (shin) from the 60-day injured list and designated left-hander Lucas Luetge for assignment. McHugh went on the 15-day IL on Sept. 6 with right-shoulder inflammation, but he should be able to rejoin Atlanta's bullpen for the stretch run soon after a couple minor-league appearances. The 36-year-old veteran has a 4.30 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 58 2/3 innings over 41 outings (one start) for Atlanta in 2023.

Tue Apr 25 202312:27Braves Activate Collin McHugh From Injured List
The Atlanta Braves activated right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and optioned left-hander Danny Young to Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move. The club also placed outfielder Eli White on the paternity list and recalled outfielder Nick Solak from the minors. McHugh landed on the injured list in early April with right shoulder inflammation, but he's fine now and will return to a relief role in Atlanta's bullpen. Before his injury, the 35-year-old veteran hurler allowed a run on four hits while walking three and striking out two in just 3 2/3 innings pitched. McHugh doesn't have much fantasy appeal unless he's in a starting role for the Braves.

Mon Apr 24 202312:21Collin McHugh Likely To Return Monday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) felt great after throwing three innings in a minor-league rehab game for High-A Rome on Saturday. He was scheduled to rest a couple days and then will likely join the Braves bullpen by Monday. McHugh has been out since feeling right shoulder soreness on April 5 in an outing against the St. Louis Cardinals. The 35-year-old tossed three scoreless innings over the weekend and looks set to come off the injured list to give Atlanta's bullpen some reinforcements. Barring a return to starting duties, though, McHugh doesn't have very much fantasy appeal at all working in relief.

Tue Apr 18 202312:10Collin McHugh Begins Rehab Assignment Tuesday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) is beginning his minor-league rehab assignment with High-A Rome on Tuesday. McHugh is close to returning after landing on the injured list in early April with right shoulder inflammation. Barring a setback while pitching in the minors, he should be able to return to Atlanta's bullpen before the calendar flips to May. The 35-year-old made just three relief appearances before getting hurt, and he had allowed one run on four hits while walking three and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings. As long as McHugh remains in Atlanta's bullpen, he'll have limited fantasy appeal in deep fantasy leagues that reward points for holds.

Sat Apr 15 202310:25Collin McHugh To Throw Side Session Saturday
Atlanta Braves right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) is expected to throw a side session on Saturday. He is no longer dealing with the shoulder discomfort he felt after his first couple of appearances this year, and he said he plans to begin throwing again after a few days of rest. McHugh is getting closer to a return to Atlanta's bullpen and should be activated from the injured before the end of April. The 35-year-old veteran made three relief appearances before going on the shelf, allowing a run on four hits while walking three and striking out two in 3 2/3 innings. As long as he's in a relief role out of Atlanta's bullpen, he won't have much fantasy value whatsoever.

Thu Apr 6 202315:31Collin McHugh Expects To Resume Throwing Soon
Atlanta Braves right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) said his shoulder was a little sore, and it showed, as his stuff wasn't sharp in his last few outings. McHugh was placed on the 15-day injured list on Thursday, but he expects to start throwing again soon and could be activated when he's eligible to return. The 35-year-old is dealing with right shoulder inflammation, but he should be back in the team's bullpen in short order. Without a starting role in Atlanta, McHugh has very little fantasy appeal these days. Rookie left-hander Jared Shuster was called up from the minors on Thursday and is likely to make his second career start on Friday against the San Diego Padres. Fantasy managers will want to stay away from Shuster in that one after he struggled in his MLB debut last week.

Thu Apr 6 202315:06Collin McHugh Put On Injured List, Jared Shuster Recalled
The Atlanta Braves placed right-hander Collin McHugh (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list on Thursday with right shoulder inflammation and recalled left-hander Jared Shuster from the minors in a corresponding move. McHugh had thrown 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for the Braves in three appearances in the early going, allowing an earned run on four hits while walking three and striking out two. He's not really fantasy relevant in a relief role for Atlanta. Shuster, a 24-year-old left-hander, made his major-league debut last week in a start against the Washington Nationals and struggled by allowing four earned runs on six hits while walking five and striking out one in 4 2/3 innings. There's a good chance he'll make his second start on Friday against the San Diego Padres.

Thu Jun 16 202214:30Collin McHugh Reinstated Thursday
The Atlanta Braves reinstated right-hander Collin McHugh from the COVID-19 injured list on Thursday and designated right-hander Jacob Webb for assignment in a corresponding move. McHugh has been out since June 7 after testing positive for the virus, but he should return to a middle-relief role in Atlanta's bullpen. Before being sidelined, he had a respectable 3.42 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 25 strikeouts and only five walks in 23 2/3 innings over 21 relief appearances. However, he's not that useful in fantasy unless you're in a league that rewards points for holds.

Tue Mar 15 202220:09Collin McHugh Signs With Braves
The Atlanta Braves have signed right-handed pitcher Collin McHugh to a two-year deal with $10 million guaranteed. The deal also has a club option for 2024. McHugh spent the 2021 season with the Tampa Bay Rays and worked in short relief and as an opener for the team. By most metrics, he was as effective as he's ever been in the majors last year. He had a 30% strikeout rate and a 1.55 ERA that was supported by a 2.26 xERA. He was exceptional at limiting hard contact with a 98th percentile barrel rate (2.5%) and a 96th percentile hard-hit rate (29.6%). If we get word that he's a candidate for a starting role with the Braves, he'd be well worthy of rostering in most fantasy leagues.

Fri Mar 11 202216:30Collin McHugh Has Robust Market
Free-agent right-hander Collin McHugh has a robust free-agent market, as expected, and the Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in him, according to an industry source. McHugh signed with the Red Sox in 2020 and then opted out of the season due to COVID-19 and injury concerns. The 34-year-old was great for the Tampa Bay Rays last year, posting a 1.55 ERA and 0.94 WHIP with 74 strikeouts and 12 walks in 64 innings over 37 appearances (seven starts). McHugh had some nice seasons with the Houston Astros from 2014-19 and will be a versatile arm for whatever club signs him this spring. In nine major league seasons, McHugh has 247 outings and has made 126 starts.

Mon Oct 11 202114:51Collin McHugh To Start As Opener In Game 4
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Collin McHugh will be the team's starter for Game 4 of the ALDS against the Boston Red Sox on Monday. As usual, he will serve as an opener for the contest before giving way to a bullpen game. McHugh has pitched once so far this series. He came on in relief of starter Shane Baz in Game 2 and went on to surrender two hits, one walk and three earned runs over 1 2/3 innings. The 34-year-old right-hander was one of the team's most dominant pitchers this year, so it's no surprise they are turning to him in Game 4. Over 37 appearances during the regular season, he went 6-1 with a 1.55 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP and a 30% strikeout rate.

Sat Aug 21 202121:08Collin McHugh Converts First Save
Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Collin McHugh struck out one across a perfect 1 2/3 innings to earn the save during Saturday's 8-4 win over the Chicago White Sox. He entered the game in the eighth inning and retired all five batters he faced to record his first save of the season. The 34-year-old has been terrific out of the bullpen for the Rays in 2021, owning a 1.30 ERA, 0.85 WHIP, and a 66:9 K: BB across 48 1/3 innings. McHugh has served as an opener and can handle multiple innings if needed but won't be in the mix for saves in the future. Fantasy managers in deep-league formats looking for help with their ratios and strikeouts can add McHugh.

Sat Aug 7 202113:51Collin McHugh Activated From Injured List
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Collin McHugh (arm) was activated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. To make room for him on the roster, the Rays optioned pitcher Louis Head to Triple-A Durham. McHugh landed on the injured list due to arm fatigue at the end of July, but prior to that he was one of the top arms in Tampa Bay's bullpen, going 3-1 with a 1.51 ERA, 0.912 WHIP and 36.6 percent strikeout rate over 41 2/3 innings of work. He'll be a solid option to roster in SV/HLD formats and on teams where managers need a boost in ERA and WHIP.

Wed Aug 4 202112:34Collin McHugh Throwing On Wednesday
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Collin McHugh (arm) threw a 21-pitch bullpen session on Wednesday. He has been sidelined since July 25 due to arm fatigue. The hope is that McHugh is cleared to pitch by the weekend. He boasts a 1.51 ERA in 41 2/3 innings with 59 strikeouts this season. Fantasy managers should continue to stash McHugh since it sounds like he'll be returning soon.
