Germen worked around a base hit and a walk in the bottom of the 16th inning early Wednesday morning against the Dodgers to claim his first save of the season.

Germen was the 13th and final pitcher the Rockies used in the game, setting a franchise record. The save opportunity came about for Germen after regular closer John Axford coughed up a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 11th inning.

Germen gave up a solo home run in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Padres.

Germen has pitched in three of the last four games, but his entry in the sixth inning of Tuesday's contest suggests manager Walt Weiss isn't considering the right-hander for high-leverage duties out of the bullpen. With a 5.52 ERA and 25:19 K:BB ratio over 29.1 innings this season, Germen could find himself outrighted off the 40-man roster this winter.

Germen was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque on Friday, Jenny Cavnar of ROOT Sports reports.

Boone Logan was placed on the DL with elbow inflammation, so the Rockies needed to add a bullpen arm. Earlier this season Germen posted a 4.63 ERA in 11.2 innings with the Rockies, so there is not much fantasy upside here.

Germen is the odd man out after spending just under a month in the big leagues since being called up in early July. The 27-year-old holds a 5.60 ERA across 17.2 innings with a 17:11 K:BB on the year.

With the Rockies down a starting pitcher after David Hale was forced into action during Thursday's rain-delayed contest, manager Walt Weiss opted for a bullpen game Friday, with Germen kicking off the proceedings. Germen was stellar in limiting the Braves to a lone hit and walk over the three innings, but he didn't stay in the game long enough to come away with the victory. He'll likely stick around in a bullpen role with the Rockies after the All-Star break.

The 27-year-old will make his first career major league start in place of David Hale, who was forced to come into Thursday's game after a rain delay and then suffered a groin strain. Germen was just brought in on a wavier claim earlier in the week after being designated for assignment by the Cubs. He posted a 3.78 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 4.6 BB/9 in 24 relief appearances with Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs likely brought up Germen to give them a fresh bullpen arm after the team burned through five of their relievers in Saturday's 11-inning victory over the Padres. He'll be among the top candidates to come on in relief Sunday if the Cubs should receive a short outing from starter Jon Lester.

Germen was removed from the 40-man as the corresponding move to the addition of Drake Britton off waivers. He split 2014 between Triple-A and the majors, though his numbers in the minors were much better than those he put up in the majors last year. Germen could battle for a bullpen spot out of spring training again this season, though his removal from the 40-man likely makes the road a little tougher.

Germen was designated for assignment on Wednesday.

It's been a busy offseason for Germen as the Cubs were already his fourth team since December. With the recent acquisition of reliever Drake Britton off of waivers, Germen was designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster.
