LHP David Holmberg had his contract purchased from Triple-A on Friday. Holmberg, 26, was 2-3 with a 3.55 ERA with the White Sox this season before he was outrighted to Triple-A on Aug. 11. He went 3-1 with a 2.78 ERA with Triple-A Charlotte.

LHP David Holmberg got knocked around a bit Sunday in his second straight start but the soft-tossing southpaw managed to limit Detroit to just one run in his 3 2/3 innings of work. "Holmy gave us what he could give us," manager Rick Renteria said. "I know we got to use (RHP Anthony) Swarzak to kind of try to help him out. We went through that bullpen pretty good just to try to minimize damage." Holmberg's stay in the rotation is likely to end when the two injured Chicago starters -- RHP James Shields and LHP Carlos Rodon -- work their way back from rehab assignments.

"I thought he did a nice job to give us four inningS of work," Renteria said. "You think we might be able to extend him." Holmberg gave up three runs on two hits in the game, while walking three and striking out two. He threw 72 pitches as the White Sox came back to win 5-4.

"I felt pretty good," Holmberg said. "I didn't really need to walk those two guys (in the fourth inning), but the offense pulled through in the end and we won the ballgame."

He is 3-6 with a 5.47 ERA in 22 career major league appearances, including 12 starts. At Charlotte, he was 3-0 with a 1.76 ERA in six appearances, including one start.

The White Sox drafted Holmberg in the second round in 2009 and traded him to Arizona the next year. Holmberg gave up a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning in the eighth in his White Sox debut against the Royals. He went 3-6 with a 6.24 ERA in 14 games, 12 of them starts, with the Diamondbacks and Reds.

Holmberg was optioned to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

Holmberg was blown up in both of his previous two starts allowing 11 runs over 8.2 total innings. He will now be replaced in the rotation by Jared Lorenzen, who will take his turn in the rotation Monday.

The Reds might skip Holmberg for Monday's start, instead using Michael Lorenzen.

Manager Bryan Price was not committing to either pitcher for Monday's start. "Hard to say. I don't think we're ready to make a commitment one way or the other," Price said on Friday. Holmberg has a 15.19 ERA over his last three starts.

Holmberg (1-4) was torched again Wednesday, giving up six runs on seven hits and two walks in just 3.2 innings against the Dodgers.

Things are not going well for Holmberg, who simply doesn't look like an MLB-caliber stater. He has more walks than strikeouts, and after surrendering another three long balls Wednesday, he's given up an insane 10 homers in just 28.1 innings this year. Fantasy owners will be well served to steer clear even if he stays in the rotation for his next turn Monday against the Cubs.

Holmberg (1-3) got touched up in Friday's loss to Arizona, giving up five runs on 11 hits and a walk while striking out just two over five innings.

The young southpaw's strong start was fun while it lasted. After going 1-1 and posting a 3.06 ERA in his first three starts, he has given up 12 runs in seven innings in his past two. The long ball deserves much of the blame for Holmberg's woes. In his past two starts, he has surrendered more than twice as many homers, five, than he has recorded strikeouts, two.

Holmberg's start has been moved back to Saturday, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Holmberg was initially expected to start Friday, but will instead throw Saturday with John Lamb joining the rotation for Friday's start. The 23-year-old southpaw has been impressive in three starts since joining the Reds, allowing just six runs over 17.2 innings. It appears he'll remain in the rotation moving forward, while Michael Lorenzen will be removed as he nears an innings limit.

Holmberg fell to 1-1 despite a quality start Monday against San Diego, as he allowed two runs on six hits and three walks over 6.2 innings. He struck out five.

Holmberg's ERA fell to 3.06 as he continues to hold his own in the rotation. He now has 12 strikeouts against nine walks, unimpressive peripheral numbers, but he has allowed just 13 hits in 17 innings and the 24-year-old should get every chance in the post-Johnny Cueto rotation for the Reds.
