Tue Mar 1912:48Alex Wood Named A's Opening Day Starter
The Oakland Athletics have named veteran left-hander Alex Wood as their Opening Day starter for March 28 versus the Cleveland Guardians. Wood doesn't have a ton of fantasy upside these days, especially while pitching for the lowly A's, but he'll make for a decent sleeper option in DFS right off the bat against Cleveland. The 33-year-old southpaw worked in a swing role for the San Francisco Giants in 2023 and went 5-5 with a 4.33 ERA (4.47 FIP) and 1.43 WHIP while walking 42 and striking out 74 in 97 2/3 innings over 29 appearances (12 starts). Durability and a lack of strikeouts make Wood one to avoid in mixed fantasy leagues, but the fact that he'll be a full-time start in Oakland this year will make him valuable in AL-only setups in 2024.

Fri Feb 220:01Alex Wood, Ross Stripling Viewed As Starters
Oakland Athletics general manager David Forst said that left-hander Alex Wood and right-hander Ross Stripling are viewed as starters with spring training right around the corner. In addition to Wood and Stripling, Paul Blackburn and JP Sears are at the top of the team's rotation for 2024. The A's signed Wood to a one-year, $8.5 million deal last weekend. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw pitched in a hybrid role with the Giants in 2023 and had a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 74 K's and 42 walks in 97 2/3 frames. Oakland's pitcher-friendly ballpark should help, but Wood has very limited fantasy appeal with diminished velocity and stuff. He'll only be useful in deep AL-only leagues. Stripling was acquired in a trade with the Giants on Friday. He disappointed in San Fran with a 5.36 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 70 K's and 16 innings as a swingman. Like Wood, Stripling has very little fantasy upside.

Sun Jan 2812:06Alex Wood Agrees With A's
Free-agent left-hander Alex Wood agreed to an undisclosed deal with the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw should be a part of Oakland's starting rotation to open the 2024 campaign after he went 5-5 with a 4.33 ERA (4.47 FIP), 1.43 WHIP, 42 walks and 74 strikeouts in 97 2/3 innings over 29 appearances (12 starts) in his third year with the San Francisco Giants in 2023. Wood's days of being fantasy relevant are in the past, although he could have some deep-league streaming appeal in a pitcher-friendly ballpark in the right matchups now that he should be in a full-time starting role with his new squad. With his velocity down, Wood relies even more on deception from his funky delivery than ever before.

Tue Jun 13 202309:33Alex Wood Could Return For The Weekend Series
San Francisco Giants starter Alex Wood (back) has progressed well in his recovery from a lower back strain, throwing a 53-pitch rehab outing with Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday. MLB.com reports that the 32-year-old is scheduled for a bullpen session later this week, and if everything goes to plan, he could rejoin the club for their weekend series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Wood's been on the injured list twice this year already, and his latest ailment forced him to the IL on June 4. Across 30 inning and seven starts in 2023, the former second-round pick owns a 4.80 ERA, 1.60 WHIP, and 21.4% strikeout rate. Fantasy managers should feel comfortable dropping Wood in most formats, especially given his injury history.

Sun Jun 4 202313:55Alex Wood Lands On The 15-day Injured List
San Francisco Giants left-handed pitcher Alex Wood (back) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. Wood didn't look very sharp in his last outing when he coughed up six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Pirates and has looked mediocre overall this season with a 4.80 ERA and 1.60 WHIP (30 innings). Wood has no timetable for his return at the moment. Right-handed pitcher Tristan Beck was recalled from Triple-Sacramento in a corresponding move.

Mon May 8 202314:55Alex Wood Goes 3 2/3 Innings In Rehab Start
San Francisco Giants left-hander Alex Wood (hamstring) made his first minor-league rehab start for Triple-A Sacramento on Sunday and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits while walking none and striking out one in 3 2/3 innings pitched. It was Wood's first game action since he injured his hamstring on April 18, so the 32-year-old southpaw will likely make at least several more rehab appearances before being activated from the 15-day injured list to rejoin San Fran's starting rotation. Wood should remain stashed in all fantasy formats, as he had a nice 1.80 ERA (3.55 FIP), 1.40 WHIP, six walks and 11 strikeouts in 10 innings in his first three starts before getting hurt.

Sun May 7 202313:17Alex Wood Starts Rehab Assignment On Sunday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Wood (hamstring) is starting a rehab assignment on Sunday at Triple-A Sacramento. The veteran left-hander has been on the injured list since the middle of April with a left hamstring strain. He should log a couple of starts in the minors before returning to the Giants. Barring any setbacks, he should be back in the majors by mid-May. Wood put up a 1.80 ERA, 1.40 WHIP, and 11:6 K/BB ratio over 10 innings (three starts) this season before going down.

Sun Apr 30 202317:05Alex Wood Throws Bullpen Session
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Wood (hamstring) was able to throw a successful bullpen session on Saturday. Now, the left-hander is scheduled to throw a simulated game on Tuesday. He continues to work his way back from a left hamstring strain that sidelined him earlier this month. If everything goes well on Tuesday, the 32-year-old should head out on a rehab assignment. The expectation is that Wood will be able to return to the Giants rotation in mid-May.

Wed Apr 19 202312:04Alex Wood Lands On 15-Day Injured List
The San Francisco Giants placed left-hander Alex Wood (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list with a left hamstring strain on Wednesday and recalled right-hander Tristan Beck from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Wood suffered a hamstring strain on Tuesday and was pulled in the third inning against the Miami Marlins. The 32-year-old southpaw had been pitching well early on this year, but fantasy managers will now be without him for at least the next two weeks. It remains to be seen who the Giants will use to replace Wood in the starting rotation moving forward. In his first 10 innings pitched in 2023, Wood has a nice 1.80 ERA (3.51 FIP), 1.40 WHIP, six walks and 11 strikeouts in three starts for the Gigantes.

Tue Apr 18 202323:11Alex Wood Likely To Go On Injured List
San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler said that left-hander Alex Wood (hamstring) is likely to land on the 15-day injured list after leaving his start early on Tuesday against the Miami Marlins with a left hamstring strain. The 32-year-old southpaw injured himself fielding a bunt in the third inning. He came into his outing on Tuesday with a strong 1.17 ERA (3.98 FIP), 1.56 WHIP, five walks and eight strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings in his first two starts of the year. It's a tough break for Wood and his fantasy managers, as he'll now miss at least the next two weeks of action. It remains to be seen who the Giants choose to replace Wood in their starting rotation in the near term.

Tue Apr 18 202321:04Alex Wood Injured During Tuesday's Game
San Francisco Giants left-hander Alex Wood (leg) exited Tuesday's start against the Miami Marlins after pitching just 2 1/3 innings. He apparently is dealing with a leg problem that he sustained while fielding a bunt during the contest, according to Alex Pavlovic. Before Wood left, he recorded three strikeouts while giving up one run on one hit and a walk. It's tough news to hear, as the 11-year veteran has been solid so far this year, posting a 1.80 ERA and 1.40 WHIP with 11 strikeouts over 10 innings of work. There's more news to come on the matter, and fantasy managers should stay tuned.

Thu Apr 6 202310:22Alex Wood Scheduled To Start Against White Sox On Thursday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Wood is set to make his season debut against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday, facing off against Lance Lynn. The left-hander had a terrific spring training, where he posted a 3.60 ERA with 24 strikeouts over 15 innings. Wood will want to keep that going into the regular season and produce numbers better than his 5.10 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and 23.6% strikeout rate from 2022, though his 3.76 FIP is encouraging. If he can stay healthy and make 30 starts, throwing at least 150 innings for the first time since 2018, fantasy managers can get some sneaky value in all four categories.

Thu Feb 23 202315:32Alex Wood Will Be A Starter
San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler confirmed that left-hander Alex Wood will be used as a starter to open the 2023 season. Wood struggled in his second season with the Giants last year, going 8-12 with a 5.10 ERA (3.76 FIP), 1.24 WHIP and 23.6 percent strikeout rate in 130 2/3 innings over 26 starts, so there were some wondering if the team would move him to a relief role this year. The 32-year-old southpaw also dealt with a left shoulder injury late in the year, but he's fully healthy this spring and will be built up as a starter. If Wood is in the starting rotation to begin the regular season, he'll bring up the rear and is a low-upside health risk for fantasy managers in deeper leagues. Wood will ideally be a matchup-based streaming option.

Sat Sep 3 202218:37Alex Wood Headed To IL
San Francisco Giants left-handed pitcher Alex Wood (shoulder) has been placed on the 15-day injured list with a left shoulder impingement. Wood said that the shoulder really started bugging him three starts ago, but he has been feeling pain for quite a while. That tracks, as Wood has a 13.86 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over his last three starts. Yikes. Manager Gabe Kapler said the team will evaluate whether or not it makes sense to ramp Wood back up, so this could be a season-ender for the lefty. Either way, he can be dropped in all redraft fantasy leagues.

Fri Jul 29 202209:55Alex Wood Flirts With No-Hitter In Thursday's Win
San Francisco Giants left-hander Alex Wood cruised through the majority of his start against the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. He took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of the game before running into some trouble. In total, he wound up pitching 6 2/3 innings and allowing two hits, two walks and two earned runs while striking out three. He earned the win to improve his record to 7-8 on the year. This was just his second quality start over his last eight outings. Across 20 total starts this year, he owns a 4.11 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP. His next trip to the mound will be on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Mon Nov 22 202120:20Alex Wood Agrees To Two-Year Deal With Giants
The San Francisco Giants are finalizing a deal with left-handed starting pitcher Alex Wood which will tie him to the team for two more seasons. The contract will be for at least $20 million dollars in total. Wood spent the 2021 season with the club, providing 138 2/3 innings across 26 starts with a 3.83 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 152 strikeouts. He had only managed 48 1/3 innings in the previous two seasons. Wood provides plenty of value as a fantasy asset, especially given his strong strikeout rate, but the concern will always be his health. He'll be a risk/reward option come draft time.

Sun Nov 7 202120:48Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood Don't Receive Qualifying Offers
San Francisco Giants starting pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood did not receive one-year, $18.4 million qualifying offers from the team on Sunday. The 31-year-old DeSclafani had a career season in San Francisco in 2021 after signing a one-year, $6 million deal. The right-hander had an excellent 3.17 ERA in his 31 starts while striking out 152 and walking 42 in 167 2/3 innings. Wood, a 30-year-old southpaw, also had a solid season with a 3.83 ERA over 26 starts while striking out 152 and walking 39 in 138 2/3 innings for the Gigantes. Wood signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Giants before last season, so it's safe to say that San Francisco hit it out of the park with both DeSclafani and Wood in free agency last year.

Tue Oct 12 202110:32Alex Wood Pitches Well In NLDS Game 3
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Alex Wood got the job done in NLDS Game 3's 1-0 win over the Dodgers. With the Giants coming off a loss in Game 2 to tie the series, Wood righted the ship once again, pitching 4 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits, two walks, and four strikeouts on the road. It may not have been the longest start, but it was enough to put the Giants in a position to win. Wood will need to continue to produce clutch performances like this if the Giants hope to extend their playoff run.

Sun Oct 10 202120:31Alex Wood To Start NLDS Game 3 Monday
San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler announced Sunday that left-hander Alex Wood will start NLDS Game 3 Monday against the Dodgers. Wood will look to get the series back on track with it currently tied at one game apiece. The 30-year-old will look to help the Giants rebound after losing Game 2; of his 13 starts following a loss during the regular season, the Giants went 12-1. Wood also owns a 3.55 playoff ERA in 33 innings and used to pitch his home game at Dodgers Stadium. However, he had a 4.76 ERA in 17 innings pitched against the Dodgers this season. The matchup is a tough one any way you slice it, but the Giants need a strong playoff performance from Wood.
