Mon Mar 2519:44Michael Wacha Not Expected To Miss Any Time
Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (finger) is fine and isn't expected to miss any time to open the 2024 regular season. Manager Matt Quatraro said Wacha woke up Monday morning and even "forgot about it." Wacha is the club's No. 4 starter in his first year in KC, joining Cole Ragans, Seth Lugo, Brady Singer and Alec Marsh. The 32-year-old veteran suffered a bruised right middle finger during an intrasquad game on Sunday, but it won't impact his availability for the start of the 2024 campaign. He's expected to make his Royals debut on April 1 in a tough matchup against the defending American League East-champion Baltimore Orioles. Fantasy managers should expect regression from Wacha after two straight fortunate seasons in 2022 and 2023.

Wed Mar 2014:44Michael Wacha Enjoying Solid Spring
Kansas City Royals right-hander Michael Wacha has enjoyed a nice spring through his first four outings of Cactus League action. The veteran has pitched to a 3.86 ERA to this point with two of his four outings coming as the scoreless variety. He has struck out 10 against four walks in his 9 1/3 innings of work. It appears the next step for the 32-year-old will be to build up his innings after maxing out at 3 2/3 frames his last time out. Wacha joined the Royals on a two-year, $32 million deal this winter on the heels of a 2023 campaign that saw him pitch to a healthy 3.22 ERA across 24 starts with the Padres, going 14-4 in the process. However, he also posted a 4.43 SIERA, suggesting some regression for 2024 as ATC projects a 4.45 ERA across another 24 starts for him this upcoming season.

Fri Dec 15 202311:51Michael Wacha Joins Royals On Two-Year Deal
Free-agent right-hander Michael Wacha and the Kansas City Royals agreed to a two-year, $32 million deal on Friday. The deal includes an opt-out clause after the first year. Wacha landed on the open market when he declined a $6.5 million player option for 2024 with the San Diego Padres after a bounce-back year in 2023 in which he went 14-4 with a 3.22 ERA (3.89 FIP), 1.16 WHIP, 43 walks and 124 strikeouts in 134 1/3 innings pitched over 24 starts for the Friars. The 32-year-old will have a locked-in rotation spot in the best division for pitchers in baseball, but some regression should be coming for a pitcher with plenty of injury risk that relies on inducing weak contact rather than missing bats. Limiting the long ball, which he did effectively last year, will be another key if he's going to be effective for a third season in a row in his new digs in KC.

Mon Dec 11 202314:48Michael Wacha, Jack Flaherty Being Eyed By Royals
The Kansas City Royals are casting a wide net in search of starting pitching this offseason and have shown interest in right-handers Michael Wacha and Jack Flaherty. The two veterans aren't the only starters linked to the club as Marcus Stroman, Lucas Giolito, and Seth Lugo have also reportedly been on the club's radar. Wacha enjoyed a fine season in 2023 as he posted a 3.22 ERA across 24 starts with the Padres one season after working to a similar 3.32 ERA in 23 outings with the Red Sox. Unsurprisingly, he opted out of a $6.5 million player option following the season. On the flip side, Flaherty largely struggled between the Cardinals and Orioles a season ago, tossing a 4.99 ERA across 144 1/3 innings, including a 6.75 ERA in 34 2/3 frames following a trade-deadline deal to Baltimore.

Sun Nov 5 202319:35Michael Wacha Heads To Free Agency
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha will become a free agent this winter. The organization has decided to decline the two-year $32 million team option on Wacha. It sounds like the right-hander would rather test free agency after a strong 2023 campaign. The 32-year-old held a 3.22 ERA, 1.16 WHIP, and 124/43 K/BB ratio over 24 starts. He should be able to secure a solid multi-year deal in free agency. There should be plenty of suitors for Wacha after his reliable 2023 season.

Tue Aug 15 202318:13Michael Wacha Officially Activated, Starting On Tuesday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) has been officially activated from the 15-day injured list on Tuesday. The right-hander has been sidelined since early July due to inflammation in his pitching shoulder. Wacha will take the ball versus the Baltimore Orioles in his return to the mound on Tuesday. Before going down, Wacha held an impressive 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and a 73/25 K/BB in 15 starts this season. Fantasy managers should make sure to get Wacha back in their lineups for Tuesday's slate.

Sat Aug 12 202300:55Michael Wacha Set To Return On Tuesday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) is slated to be activated from the injured list and return to the team's rotation on Tuesday versus the Baltimore Orioles. Yu Darvish was originally penciled in for that one, so he figures to be moved back a day. Wacha has sat on the injured list since early July due to right shoulder inflammation. The 32-year-old tossed 67 pitches on Thursday during a simulated game, but it remains to be seen if he'll be on some sort of pitch count for his first game back in over a month. Wacha hasn't fared well against the O's in the past, logging a career 5.87 ERA and 1.46 WHIP covering 38.1 innings (nine starts) opposing them since 2020. Fantasy managers still need to make sure the right-hander isn't floating around waiver wires; Wacha is attaining top-50 roto value in 2023 on a 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 73 strikeouts, and eight wins through 85.2 frames.

Sun Aug 6 202312:50Michael Wacha Walks Three In Rehab Start
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) tossed two innings for Triple-A El Paso in a minor-league rehab start on Saturday night and didn't allow a run while giving up two hits, walking three and striking out two. It was Wacha's first outing in any game since facing the Cincinnati Reds on July 1. The 32-year-old will look to display better control in his next rehab start, which could be his last before rejoining the Padres starting rotation for the stretch run. The Friars could definitely use Wacha back with righty Joe Musgrove (shoulder) likely out until September. Wacha was carrying San Diego's rotation earlier this season and has gone 8-2 with a fantastic 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings over 15 starts.

Fri Aug 4 202319:45Michael Wacha To Make First Rehab Start Saturday
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) will make a minor-league rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A El Paso and will likely sit in the 50- to 60-pitch range during the outing. Wacha hasn't pitched since July 1 due to right-shoulder inflammation, and the Friars have been keen on not rushing him back. They now have a bit more urgency with right-hander Joe Musgrove (shoulder) being shut down for three weeks due to inflammation in his right shoulder capsule. The 32-year-old Wacha will probably need more than one rehab start in the minors, but barring a setback, he should be back around mid to late August. Wacha has been excellent with an ERA under 3.00 and a 1.07 WHIP. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect him to be as great the rest of the way, but he's earned a roster spot in all fantasy leagues in 2023.

Tue Aug 1 202320:23Michael Wacha Expected Back In Mid-August
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) faced hitters for the first time since going on the injured list with shoulder fatigue by tossing two "innings" in a simulated game against minor-leaguers at Petco Park on Monday. "Felt good, velo was there," manager Bob Melvin said. "We'll see how he feels (Tuesday). And we'll probably have some plans on what's next." Wacha hasn't pitched in a game sine July 1 and he's expected to rejoin the starting rotation in mid-August, barring a setback. The veteran right-hander was excellent before going on the shelf, posting a 2.84 ERA and 1.07 WHIP in 15 starts covering 85 2/3 innings, and he was the National League Pitcher of the Month in May.

Mon Jul 31 202319:28Michael Wacha To Throw Simulated Game Monday
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) is scheduled to face hitters on Monday in a simulated game, but his next step remains unclear. He missed a start in late June with right-shoulder inflammation and landed on the injured list after making one more start on July 1. The Padres continue to be cautious with Wacha, who threw his first bullpen session on July 25 and another one on July 28 in which he used all his pitches. The 32-year-old has been excellent for the Friars and fantasy managers in 2023, posting a 2.84 ERA over his 15 starts, although regression could be coming to close out the year while coming off his shoulder injury.

Wed Jul 26 202321:26Michael Wacha Throws Bullpen
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday for the first time since he landed on the injured list with right-shoulder inflammation earlier this month. He continues to build up toward an expected August return after throwing 25 pitches on Tuesday, using his fastball and changeup exclusively. Wacha is scheduled to throw a second bullpen session on Friday, where he plans to mix in the rest of his pitches. The Friars will continue to use a four-man starting rotation, and Wacha doesn't appear to be an option to start on Aug. 1, the next time the team would need a fifth starter. The 32-year-old veteran has been lights-out for SD in 2023, going 8-2 with a 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 85 2/3 innings over 15 starts.

Sat Jul 22 202310:35Michael Wacha Expected Out Through July
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) is playing catch and throwing off flat ground, but still isn't able to do mound work. The 32-year-old is unlikely to return before the end of July at this juncture, per manager Bob Melvin. Wacha required an injured-list stint on July 4 with right shoulder inflammation and it looks as though he'll end up missing at least a month of action. The right-hander's 2022 resurgence has carried over into 2023, yielding a 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 73:25 K:BB in 85 2/3 innings covering 15 starts. Wacha should still be kept stashed in the majority of competitive fantasy leagues.

Sun Jul 16 202313:51Michael Wacha Has Yet To Resume Throwing
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) has yet to resume throwing after landing on the injured list back on July 4 with right shoulder inflammation. He told reporters that he'd like to start playing catch during the team's current road trip, either in Toronto or Detroit. However, he still has no timetable for his return and the Padres will want to be extra cautious with the 32-year-old who has put together a resurgent season. Wacha owns a 7-2 record, 2.90 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, and 69:23 K/BB ratio over 80 2/3 innings (14 starts).

Tue Jul 4 202315:27Padres Put Michael Wacha On 15-Day Injured List
The San Diego Padres placed right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to July 2) on Tuesday with right-shoulder inflammation. In corresponding moves, the team recalled left-hander Jose Castillo, right-hander Matt Waldron and infielder Matthew Batten from Triple-A El Paso and optioned right-hander Domingo Tapia to El Paso. Wacha has been dealing with a shoulder problem for a bit now and had a start skipped before tossing five innings of one-run ball on July 1 against the Cincinnati Reds. The 32-year-old veteran has been fantastic for the Friars this year and hasn't allowed more than two earned runs since April 26. He's gone 8-2 with a 2.84 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 73 K's in 85 2/3 innings over 15 starts and needs to be stashed in all fantasy formats.

Sat Jul 1 202312:01Michael Wacha Starting On Saturday
San Diego Padres right-hander Michael Wacha (shoulder) will return to the mound and start on Saturday against the Cincinnati Reds on his 32nd birthday as the Padres look to snap their six-game losing streak. The Padres skipped Wacha in the rotation due to a sore right shoulder, and he hasn't pitched since June 19, so he's going to be more risky for fantasy purposes, especially on the road in a hitter-friendly ballpark against the first-place Reds. However, the 32-year-old has been San Diego's most consistent starter this year, and he hasn't allowed more than two runs in an outing since his fifth game of the season way back on April 26 against the Chicago Cubs. Overall, Wacha has gone 7-2 with a strong 2.90 ERA (3.79 FIP), 1.05 WHIP, 23 walks and 69 K's in 80 2/3 frames over 14 starts.

Thu Jun 29 202312:06Michael Wacha Throwing Bullpen Thursday
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) is throwing a bullpen session on Thursday before the team's series finale against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With Yu Darvish (illness) questionable to make his next start this weekend on the road against the Cincinnati Reds, the Padres are really hoping Wacha's bullpen goes well so he can make a start against the Reds after having his turn skipped last Saturday against the Washington Nationals due to right-shoulder fatigue. The 31-year-old right-handed veteran has been the Padres' most consistent starter in 2023, going 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 69 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings over 14 starts, but he'll be extra risky if he starts this weekend in Cincy coming off shoulder fatigue.

Fri Jun 23 202320:01Michael Wacha To Be Skipped Due To Shoulder Fatigue
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha (shoulder) is dealing with right-shoulder fatigue, according to manager Bob Melvin. The plan is for Wacha to skip one start and then return to the team's rotation. It's why the Padres are calling up rookie right-hander Matt Waldron from Triple-A El Paso to make his major-league debut in a start against the Washington Nationals on Saturday. If Wacha's arm is feeling better after skipping a start, he should be lined up to start on June 30 against the Cincinnati Reds. Wacha has excellent for the Friars in his first year in SD, going 7-2 with a 2.90 ERA (3.78 FIP), 1.05 WHIP, 23 walks and 69 strikeouts in 80 2/3 innings over his 14 starts. Fantasy managers will be hoping to use him next week against the Reds.

Thu Jun 15 202301:54Michael Wacha Blanks Cleveland, Continues Resurgent Season
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha fired 6 2/3 scoreless innings versus the Cleveland Guardians on Wednesday. The 31-year-old scattered four singles with one walk and five strikeouts for his seventh win of the season in the team's 5-0 shutout victory. Wacha is in the zone for a microscopic 0.91 ERA with 46 punchouts over his last eight starts (49 1/3 innings). The right-hander also owns five scoreless appearances of at least six innings over this dazzling stretch. Wacha is embarking on quite the career resurrection dating back to last year, as he is 18-4 since 2022. The former NLCS MVP lines up on Monday to face the San Francisco Giants, who he has a lifetime 1.42 ERA against across 38 career innings.

Mon May 22 202309:33Michael Wacha Throws Six Scoreless Innings
San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael Wacha was sharp on the mound during Sunday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The right-hander threw six scoreless innings, only allowing five hits, while striking out four in the 7-0 win. Wacha did have times where he got into trouble, but was able to work out of it without any problems. He now improved to a 5-1 record with a 3.58 ERA and 1.15 WHIP across nine starts this season. He'll head into a tough battle against the New York Yankees on Saturday.
