Fri Feb 2320:12D-backs Ink Kyle Garlick, Albert Almora Jr. To Minors Deals
The Arizona Diamondbacks have signed outfielders Kyle Garlick and Albert Almora to minor-league deals. Garlick, 32, has spent the last three seasons with the Minnesota Twins but his production took a major turn for the worse in the 2023 season. Known as a lefty-masher, the righty-swinging Garlick hit just .179 with a 36.7% K% across a small 30-plate-appearance sample size in the 2023 season. He did hover around league average in his previous two seasons, as per wRC+, and has generally hit left-handed pitching well in his career. Almora, 29, didn't appear in the big leagues in the 2023 season as he suffered a shoulder injury late in the 2022 season. He is a career .239 hitter with 33 home runs and seven stolen bases across 600 MLB contests.

Over 48 games on the year, he has slashed .234/.259/.371 with five home runs, 26 RBI and 18 runs. Expect to see him back in the majors at some point within the next week.

Thu Jun 9 202216:00Albert Almora Jr. Exits With An Injury Thursday
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Albert Almora Jr. was removed in the fifth inning of Thursday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with an undisclosed injury. He attempted a diving catch in the fourth inning of the game and could have sustained an injury during the play, but the cause of the injury hasn't been revealed by the team yet. TJ Friedl came in to take over in center field, pushing Aristides Aquino to right field. Almora has slashed .309/.325/.420 over 23 games on the year and he's settled into a regular outfield role with the team lately.

Sun Mar 20 202213:32Albert Almora Jr. In Reds Camp
The Cincinnati Reds reportedly have signed free-agent outfielder Albert Almora Jr. to an undisclosed deal, as he is with the team in spring camp. Almora will join the Reds this year after slashing an ugly .115/.148/.173 with no home runs or RBI in 54 plate appearances in his lone season with the New York Mets. Before the 2021 season, he hit a combined .271/.309/.398 with 28 long balls, 134 RBI and 160 runs scored in 1,316 plate appearances over 489 games for the Chicago Cubs from 2016-20. The 27-year-old is mostly a glove-first player, and although there is opportunity in Cincinnati, Almora is unlikely to be much of a fantasy asset in deeper leagues, even if he earns regular playing time with the Reds.

Fri Aug 6 202100:41Albert Almora Jr. Adds Three Hits Thursday
New York Mets outfielder Albert Almora Jr. got the spot start in center field Thursday, giving Brandon Nimmo a breather, and he was the team's offensive star of the game. Unfortunately for the Mets, all it took to be the star of the game was to go 3-for-5 with a double, two singles, and a run scored as the team fell 4-2. Despite the strong game, Almora Jr. has recorded a minuscule .352 OPS in his 45 at-bats this season, and sees nowhere near enough playing time to be a fantasy consideration.

Tue Jun 8 202117:45Mets' McNeil expected to start rehab assignment by Sunday
BALTIMORE (AP) — New York Mets manager Luis Rojas said Tuesday that he expects infielder Jeff McNeil to begin a rehab assignment by the end of the weekend. McNeil hasn't played since May 16 because of a strained left hamstring. He's hitting .242 with three home runs and eight RBIs on the season, but he batted over .300 each of his first three years in the big leagues, and the injury-plagued Mets could certainly use him back. Rojas also said outfielder Michael Conforto (right hamstring strain) is probably a couple weeks from starting his rehab assignment, but he's been able to hit and do defensive work. Outfielder Albert Almora (bruised left shoulder) was set to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday night, and infielder Luis Guillorme (right oblique strain) could be activated for the weekend. McNeil was expected to be out until late June, but Rojas said he's responded well to treatment and has been able to take grounders, run and swing the bat. Despite their injuries, the Mets entered Tuesday night's game at Baltimore with a 3 1/2-game lead in the NL East. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

DUNEDIN, Fla. (AP) — Francisco Mejía hit a tiebreaking, two-run single during a seven-run burst in the 11th inning and the Tampa Bay Rays won their 11th straight game, outlasting the Toronto Blue Jays 14-8 on Monday. Tampa Bay moved within one win of the team record for consecutive victories. In 2004, playing as the Devil Rays, they won 12 in a row under manager Lou Piniella. After both teams scored twice in the 10th to make it 7-all, the Rays broke loose. Mejía’s hit came off Joel Payamps (0-2) with the bases loaded. Randy Arozarena doubled home a run, Austin Meadows had an RBI grounder, Manuel Margot knocked in two with a triple and Mike Brosseau added an RBI single against Tim Mayza. Joey Wendle hit a grand slam as Tampa Bay took a 5-0 lead in the first. The Rays wound up with a four-game sweep and took over sole possession of first place in the AL East. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit two of Toronto’s five home runs. The Blue Jays lost their sixth in a row. Tampa Bay scored twice in the 10th,... [More]
Tue May 25 202100:33Mets' Conforto, McNeil likely out until late June
NEW YORK (AP) — Mets right fielder Michael Conforto and second baseman Jeff McNeil have hamstring injuries that are likely to keep them out of action for another month. “They’re significant hamstring strains,” New York general manager Zack Scott said Monday during a lengthy recounting of the Mets’ MASH unit, which currently has a major league-high 16 players on the injured list plus right-hander Jordan Yamamoto set to join. “If I’m putting a timeframe on that, we’re probably looking at late June.” Three innings after rookie Johneshwy Fargas was hurt crashing into the center-field wall on Monday night, Mets owner Steve Cohen tweeted: “Anybody want to suit up?” Conforto and McNeil both got hurt on April 30. Right-hander Carlos Carrasco, sidelined by a strained right hamstring, won’t be ready to pitch for the Mets until late June or early July, Scott said. The six-week timetable from now is the same as the projection when Carrasco first got hurt on March 18. When Carrasco was moved from the... [More]

Wed May 19 202118:08Walker added to Mets' lengthy IL list, Maybin joins OF mix
ATLANTA (AP) — The New York Mets added right hander Taijuan Walker to their lengthy injured list on Wednesday after he lasted only three innings in this week's start against the Braves due to tightness in his left side. In a related move, the Mets selected the contract of outfielder Cameron Maybin from Triple-A Syracuse and started him in left field in Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves. The Mets acquired Maybin from the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday for cash. Walker was placed on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to Tuesday. Left-hander Stephen Tarpley and right-hander Sam McWilliams also were placed on the injured list. Mets manager Louis Rojas says plan for Walker is similar to the schedule for Jacob deGrom, who is on the 10-day IL with tightness in his lower back. Rojas said deGrom will have an injury rehabilitation start with Class A St. Lucie on Thursday. The team wants to see deGrom avoid a recurrence of the discomfort in his back while pitching in a game. “We want to... [More]
Tue May 18 202100:58Walker, Pillar hurt after Mets add Conforto, McNeil to IL
ATLANTA (AP) — Taijuan Walker and Kevin Pillar joined a long list of injured New York Mets players as both were forced to leave Monday night's 3-1 win against the Atlanta Braves. Walker pitched only three innings, allowing one hit and no runs, before exiting with tightness in his left side. With the bases loaded in the seventh, Pillar was hit square in the face by a 95 mph fastball from Jacob Webb. The veteran outfielder was knocked to the ground with blood pouring from his nose. Pillar was quickly helped to his feet with towels covering his face as he was escorted off the field. After the game, Mets manager Luis Rojas said Pillar was taken to the hospital for a CT scan. Pillar then provided an encouraging update on his Twitter account. “Thanks to everyone that has reached out! Scary moment but I’m doing fine!” he posted. Braves players, including Webb, watched the scary scene in shock. As members of the Atlanta grounds crew covered the blood left in the batter's box area, Webb was removed... [More]

Wed May 12 202117:36Dark Knight returns: Harvey, Orioles lose to Mets 7-1
NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey walked onto the Citi Field mound for the first time in 3 years, 9 days, his brown eyes darting around the stadium where he became a star and left in ignominy. “There’s been so many ups and downs here at this ballpark and with this organization that I didn’t really know what to expect,” he said later. “What the fans gave me out there was pretty incredible. I was holding back tears.” Harvey received three standing ovations, but his outing for Baltimore was no better than his final performances for New York. Pitching against against the Mets for the first time, Harvey allowed Kevin Pillar’s two-run triple in a three-run second inning that carried New York over the Orioles 7-1 on Wednesday for a seven-game winning streak. Wearing orange and black instead of blue and orange, Harvey (3-3) gave up a season-high seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. His ERA rose from 3.60 to 4.81 as the last-place Orioles lost for the fifth time... [More]

Wed May 12 202115:07Dark Knight returns: Harvey, Orioles lose to Mets 7-1
NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey was greeted warmly by Mets fans in his return to Citi Field and harshly by New York’s hitters. Harvey pitched against his former team for the first time and allowed Kevin Pillar’s two-run triple in a three-run second inning that carried the Mets to their seventh straight win, 7-1 over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Wearing orange and black instead of blue and orange, Harvey (3-3) gave up a season-high seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, and his ERA rose from 3.60 to 4.81 as the last-place Orioles lost for the fifth time in six games. Taijuan Walker (3-1) lowered his ERA to 2.20, allowing one run and four hits over seven innings as part of a five-hitter. Dominic Smith had three hits and two RBIs for the NL East-leading Mets, who completed a two-game sweep that finished a 5-0 homestand. Tue May 11 202121:36Mets' McNeil, Almora exit with injuries against Orioles
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Mets lost All-Star second baseman Jeff McNeil to body cramps and center fielder Albert Almora Jr. after a vicious crash with the outfield wall during a game against the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night. McNeil lined his second hit of the game off starter John Means with two outs in the third inning and tried to beat center fielder Cedric Mullins' throw to second. He slowed down about halfway between first and second and was out by several steps. McNeil lifted his average to .234 this season as he's gradually pulled out of an early slump. Last Friday, the 29-year-old McNeil appeared to get into a dugout scuffle with double-play partner Francisco Lindor — a moment Lindor tried to dismiss as a debate about rats and raccoons. Almora tracked Austin Hays' rocket to the warning track in center and had the ball in his glove when he slammed face-first into the wall. His head left an indention on the padded fencing. The ball fell out of his mitt, and Almora crashed to the warning track, where he remained face down for over a minute. With the help of a trainer, he picked himself up and walked off under his own power to applause from fans at Citi Field. Almora was 0 for 3 and is batting .048 this season. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Thu Mar 18 202101:11Astros LHP Framber Valdez gets positive update on injury
The Houston Astros received a positive update on left-hander Framber Valdez on the same day Forrest Whitley had season-ending surgery on his right elbow. Valdez met with Dr. Steven Shin in Los Angeles on Wednesday, and new images of the pitcher's fractured left ring finger showed significant healing, according to the team. Valdez is expected to continue his rehab at the team's facility in Florida, and there is no timetable yet for his return to the mound. The 27-year-old Valdez went 5-3 with a 3.57 ERA in 11 games last year, including 10 starts. He got hurt when struck by a comebacker while pitching against the Mets on March 2. Whitley's Tommy John surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. He got hurt while throwing batting practice this spring training. The 23-year-old Whitley, one of Houston's top prospects, is expected to miss at least a year. He was selected by the Astros in the first round of the 2016 amateur draft.
