Wed Mar 1313:07Lucas Giolito Has Successful Elbow Surgery
Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow) had successful right-elbow UCL repair with internal brace on Tuesday. The procedure was performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas at the Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopedics Center in Birmingham, Alabama. Giolito will miss all of the 2024 season as a result, but it's still considered good news overall, as he was able to avoid having the second Tommy John surgery of his career. If everything goes well with his recovery this year and into next offseason, the 29-year-old could have a shot to be ready for Opening Day in 2025 for the BoSox. Giolito was hoping to rebound from a rocky 2023 campaign that saw him pitch for three different teams (White Sox, Angels, Reds), but that will now have to wait until 2025.

Mon Mar 1115:57Lucas Giolito Set To Undergo Surgery
Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito (elbow) will have surgery on his right elbow Tuesday afternoon. The extent of the ligament damage isn't known. It's possible Giolito needs Tommy John surgery but he could also require just a brace procedure. Either way, he is most assuredly out for 2024. If he requires Tommy John, it could push his start to the 2025 season back, but if it's the brace procedure, he could be ready by the time the offseason comes around. Last week it was reported the 29-year-old had a partial tear in his UCL and a flexor strain, so the news has been bleak recently. He should now be avoided by all redraft leagues. Even in dynasty leagues, it could be time to move on, as Giolito hasn't posted a respectable ERA, FIP or WHIP since 2021. His strikeout potential is what he has to hang his hat on.

Wed Mar 612:11Lucas Giolito Going For Second Opinion
Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow) will have a second opinion on Monday from Dr. Dugas in Alabama. Manager Alex Cora said that surgery is a possibility, but the team will know more next week. Dugas is the same doctor that did Garrett Whitlock's Tommy John surgery. The 29-year-old is dealing with a partially torn UCL and flexor strain in his right elbow and is probably going to be forced to miss all of the 2024 season, especially if he undergoes Tommy John surgery. It's a big blow to Boston's starting rotation before the start of the year. To say the least, fantasy managers should be avoiding Giolito in upcoming fantasy drafts. His 2023 season was a disaster, pitching for three different teams and posting a 4.88 ERA.

Tue Mar 510:57Lucas Giolito Could Miss Entire Season With Partially Torn UCL
Feeling discomfort after his last spring outing, Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito (elbow) was checked out, and imaging showed that he likely has a partially torn UCL and a flexor strain. Giolito may need surgery, which would mean he'd miss the entire season. The former first-round draft pick signed with Boston in the offseason, and after the departure of Chris Sale, leaves Boston very thin in their starting rotation.

Thu Jan 421:13Lucas Giolito Plans To Fix Mechanics Going Into 2024 Season
Boston Red Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito has a plan to fix what has plagued him on the mound for the better part of the last two years and is eager to work alongside Red Sox pitching coach Andrew Bailey in 2024. It didn't help that Giolito spent time with three teams -- the Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels and Cincinnati Reds -- and went through a divorce this past season. He'll be looking for a bounce-back year in Beantown after signing a two-year, $38.5 million deal this offseason with the Red Sox. Giolito had a 7.04 ERA in his final six starts and hasn't been the same pitcher that was a Cy Young candidate from 2019-21. The 29-year-old remained durable, though, and he's had 200 strikeouts twice in the last three years. It won't be easy at Fenway Park or in the tough American League East, but if Giolito tightens up his mechanics and stays healthy, he could be a fine value pick in fantasy drafts.

Fri Dec 29 202318:07Lucas Giolito, Red Sox Agree On Two-Year Deal
Free-agent right-hander Lucas Giolito and the Boston Red Sox agreed on a two-year, $38.5 million deal on Friday that includes an opt-out clause after the first season, according to sources. With the move, the pitching-needy Red Sox have their first big signing of the winter. It's probably not the best landing spot for a former Cy Young contender looking for a bounce-back season in 2024, but the 29-year-old will still be plenty attractive at a discounted price in fantasy drafts in the spring after he went 8-15 with a 4.88 ERA (5.27 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP while walking 73 and striking out 204 in 184 1/3 innings over 33 starts with the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians. Giolito really struggled in the second half after being sent to the Angels at the trade deadline. He allowed a league-high 41 home runs last year, too, but there's still a lot to like given the fact he's had 200-plus K's in three of the last four full seasons.

Wed Dec 27 202300:31Red Sox "Remain Engaged" With Lucas Giolito
The Boston Red Sox have "remained engaged" with free-agent starting pitcher Lucas Giolito along with many other clubs, per MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo. Despite his proven upside, the 29-year-old posted his second consecutive poor season with the White Sox, Angels, and Guardians, going 8-15 with a 4.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 25.7% strikeout rate in 33 starts. Starting pitching was an issue for the Red Sox last season, so they, along with other teams will be hoping that Giolito can return to his 2019-21 form. While he has turned in higher-end seasons in his career, fantasy managers may want to take a wait-and-see approach to Giolito this season to see if he can return to form before placing trust in him.

Mon Dec 11 202314:17Royals Showing Interest in Marcus Stroman, Lucas Giolito
The Kansas City Royals are showing interest in free agent starters Marcus Stroman and Lucas Giolito. Stroman became a free agent when he opted out of his contract with the Cubs in early November after working to a 3.95 ERA across 27 outings (25 starts) with the club in 2023. He has long been one of the game's most reliable starters, working to a career 3.65 ERA in 231 appearances with a sub-4.00 ERA in each of the last four campaigns. As for Giolito, the right-hander endured an uneven 2023 season split between the White Sox, Angels, and Guardians as he posted a 4.88 ERA across 33 starts. He received Cy Young votes from 2019-2021 with a 3.53 ERA or better in each of those seasons but has scuffled over the last two campaigns.

Tue Dec 5 202315:59Lucas Giolito Drawing Interest From Five Teams
Free-agent right-hander Lucas Giolito is drawing interest on the open market from the Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals. The sweepstakes for Japanese right-hander Yoshinobu Yamamoto and two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani could impact Giolito's destination for next season. The 29-year-old had a 4.88 ERA in 2023 with a 1.31 WHIP, 204 strikeouts and 73 walks over 184 1/3 innings for the Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Angels and Cleveland Guardians while tying for a league-best 33 starts. Giolito has had a couple disappointing seasons in 2022 and 2023 after being an American League Cy Young contender from 2019-21. He still has plenty of strikeout upside and could be an intriguing bounce-back candidate if he lands in the right situation.

Mon Nov 27 202317:41Dodgers Interested In Lucas Giolito This Offseason
FanSided's Robert Murray says that the Los Angeles Dodgers have interest in free-agent right-hander Lucas Giolito this offseason as they look for starting-rotation depth heading into the 2024 campaign. Walker Buehler missed all of 2023 while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery, and Clayton Kershaw (shoulder) is a free agent and is expected to miss around half the season. Giolito, 29, started last season with the Chicago White Sox before being traded to the Los Angeles Angles and then claimed off waivers by the Cleveland Guardians. It was a second straight down year for the right-handed hurler with a 4.88 ERA (5.27 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP overall, but he was an All-Star in 2019 and was in the AL Cy Young running from 2019-21.

Mon Sep 4 202321:40Lucas Giolito Hit Hard In Cleveland Debut
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Lucas Giolito was shelled in a 20-6 loss to the Minnesota Twins on Monday. Making his first start for Cleveland, Giolito allowed nine runs on seven hits over three innings while striking out three and walking three. He served up three homers, including a grand slam to third baseman Royce Lewis, in the disastrous outing. Giolito has struggled for much of the season and now has a 7-12 record, 4.88 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 168 strikeouts across 156 2/3 innings of work. He will look to regroup in his next start, which comes on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels.

Fri Sep 1 202320:35Lucas Giolito To Make Guardians Debut Monday
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Lucas Giolito, who was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, will make his debut for Cleveland in the series opener on Monday against the division-rival Minnesota Twins. Giolito wasn't very good in his six starts for the Halos, surrendering 28 runs (25 earned) on 33 hits (10 home runs) while walking 15 and striking out 34 in 32 2/3 innings. The Guardians are hoping they're getting the version of Giolito when he was with the Chicago White Sox earlier this year, as he went 6-6 with the Pale Hose with a 3.79 ERA (4.44 FIP), 1.22 WHIP, 42 walks and 131 strikeouts in 121 innings over 21 starts. The move to the weak American League Central should be good news for the 29-year-old as he closes out his 2023 season.

Thu Aug 31 202314:02Guardians Claim Lucas Giolito Off Waivers From Angels
The Cleveland Guardians claimed right-hander Lucas Giolito off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels on Thursday, according to sources. Even though the Guardians are under .500, they are only five games back of the American League Central-leading Minnesota Twins, so they jumped at the chance to secure an established rotation arm. The 29-year-old has gone 7-11 this year with the Chicago White Sox and Angels, posting a 4.45 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 165 strikeouts in 153 2/3 innings over 27 starts. However, he went just 1-5 with a 6.89 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and 34 K's in 32 2/3 innings in his six starts with the Halos. Fantasy managers are hoping the move to Cleveland the rest of the way will help him finish strong in the weakest division in baseball by far.

Wed Aug 9 202301:42Lucas Giolito Rebounds With Quality Start In Win
Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Lucas Giolito threw six innings, permitting three runs on three hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in Tuesday's start versus the San Francisco Giants. He earned his seventh win of the year and his first since joining the Angels. Giolito was staked to a four-run lead in between two clean opening frames of work, but San Francisco would tag him for three runs in the third inning. The big right-hander then settled down to toss three more scoreless innings thereafter for a quality start, and the Halos would hold on to finally snap their seven-game losing skid. Giolito needed an encouraging showing in a big way after surrendering nine runs amid his last appearance against the Atlanta Braves. The former All-Star carries a 4.37 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and 145:49 K:BB in 136 frames into a stiff road matchup against the Texas Rangers set for next Tuesday.

Thu Jul 27 202312:12Lucas Giolito To Make Angels Debut Friday
New Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Lucas Giolito will make his debut with the Angels on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays. The Angels acquired Giolito and reliever Reynaldo Lopez from the Chicago White Sox for two top prospects on Wednesday night as they look to make a playoff push in the second half of the season. The 29-year-old Giolito's move to the American League West probably won't affect his fantasy value all that much outside of giving him the opportunity for a few more wins. He'll be on normal rest on Friday in a tough matchup against Toronto. Giolito has been solid for fantasy managers in 2023 with a 6-6 record, 3.79 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 131 punchouts in 121 innings over his 21 starts.

Thu Jul 27 202300:38Lucas Giolito Being Traded To Angels
The Los Angeles Angels are finalizing a trade to acquire Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito along with reliever Reynaldo Lopez. The Angels will send over their No. 2 prospect, catcher Edgar Quero, and No. 3 prospect, left-hander Ky Bush, to the South Side in exchange. Things seem to have changed very quickly in Anaheim. On the same night it was announced the Halos removed two-way superstar Shohei Ohtani from the trade market, they make a move to add one of the top starting pitchers on the trading block. Giolito is enjoying a fine rebound season after a disastrous 2022, putting up a 3.79 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 131:42 K:BB in 121 innings in 2023. The 29-year-old has one year left on his current contract and his redraft fantasy value remains fairly unchanged with the move. Giolito will offer Ohtani something of a running mate in the Angels rotation to help the club's push toward their first playoff berth since 2014.

Fri Jul 21 202312:36Diamondbacks Have Inquired About Lucas Giolito
The Arizona Diamondbacks, along with the Los Angeles Dodgers, have inquired about Chicago White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito, according to sources. The White Sox are going to be sellers ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline, and Giolito is one of their most attractive pieces. Arizona has already lost its lead on the National League West early in the second half, and their lack of quality rotation depth is a glaring issue. If they are going to seriously contend for a playoff spot the rest of the way, they'll need to upgrade there. The 29-year-old Giolito has gone 6-6 in 2023 with a 3.96 ERA (4.56 FIP), 1.19 WHIP, 39 walks and 122 strikeouts in 20 starts (116 innings). A recent poor outing against the Mets in which he gave up eight runs in 3 2/3 innings ruined an otherwise strong stretch for Giolito since May 25.

Thu Jul 13 202315:20Dodgers Interested In Lucas Giolito
The Los Angeles Dodgers are interested in Chicago White Sox right-hander Lucas Giolito, who is one of the top available pitchers this summer, according to sources. Giolito went to high school in Los Angeles and has a solid 3.45 ERA (4.21 FIP), 1.14 WHIP, 34 walks and 117 strikeouts in 112 1/3 innings over his 19 starts. The Dodgers have a league-best nine of the industry's top-100 prospects as well, so they'll have plenty of ammunition to find notable upgrades to their roster this summer for the starting rotation or elsewhere. The 28-year-old Giolito makes the most sense because of the fact that he's scheduled to become a free agent after the 2023 season, so the Dodgers may want him as a rental for a postseason run this fall. Giolito's fantasy value would only increase with a move to a much better team.

Sat Jun 24 202300:44Lucas Giolito Strikes Out 10 Red Sox Batters In Loss
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito fanned 10 batters and conceded three runs, with only one earned, during his six-inning outing in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Friday. Despite the White Sox out-hitting their opponent 8-4, Giolito's team didn't help him at all offensively. Chicago pitchers racked up 17 strikeouts in the losing effort. With the loss, the 28-year-old right-hander now has a 5-5 record, a 3.41 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 92 1/3 innings so far in this year's campaign.

Tue Jun 6 202322:05Lucas Giolito Finds Rhythm To Make Franchise History
Chicago White Sox starting pitcher Lucas Giolito hurled six no-hit innings versus the New York Yankees on Tuesday. The 28-year-old allowed three walks (two in the first frame), but worked around it for a superb outing as Chicago held on for an eventual 3-2 victory to get him his fifth win of the season. Giolito also tossed six no-hit frames back on April 18, standing alone as the only pitcher in White Sox history with multiple no-hit starts of at least six innings in a single year. The former All-Star is having a solid, yet unspectacular campaign overall, though, with a 3.75 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 76:24 K:BB in 74 1/3 innings. Giolito's next scheduled start comes on Sunday against the beatable Miami Marlins.
