Wed Mar 2019:16Gio Urshela Hasn't Locked Down Starting Duties At Third Base
When the Detroit Tigers signed infielder Gio Urshela to a one-year, $1.5 million deal late in February, having him serve as the primary third baseman in 2024 always made the most sense but the Tigers didn't make any declarations about his playing time because they needed to evaluate his on-field performance in his return from a broken pelvis last year. With eight days until Opening Day on March 28 against the Chicago White Sox, Urshela hasn't locked down starting duties at the hot corner as he competes with Matt Vierling, Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez. Vierling was projected to be the primary third baseman before the team signed Urshela, only to move back to his previous role as an outfielder. Urshela is the best defender, but he hasn't been hitting for power or drawing walks on offense. Urshela and Vierling -- both right-handed hitters -- are at the top of the pecking order in the internal plan for a primary third baseman.

Thu Feb 2213:41Gio Urshela Chooses The Tigers
Free-agent infielder Gio Urshela and the Detroit Tigers agreed to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Thursday, according to sources. The 32-year-old veteran should help the Tigers at third base and can also play the outfield and at first base. His ability to hit left-handers suits what the Tigers have been seeking over the winter. A fractured pelvis limited Urshela to 62 games with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023, and he hit .299/.329/.374 with 24 RBI in 228 plate appearances before the injury. The veteran Colombian could now be the favorite for most of the playing time at the hot corner in Detroit, at least against left-handers. In his career against southpaws, he's hit .290/.328/.445 with 17 homers and 67 RBI in 682 plate appearances. Urshela provides little power but could carry a strong average for fantasy managers in deep-mixed and AL-only leagues because of his high contact rate.

Wed Feb 2118:33Red Sox Interested In Gio Urshela
The Boston Red Sox are among the teams interested in adding free-agent infielder Gio Urshela, according to a source. In addition to Boston, the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Miami Marlins have been looking at Urshela. His market has been slow to develop this offseason. The 32-year-old veteran is best known for three strong years with the Yankees from 2019-21. He's seen most of his appearances (585 of 643) at third base, where the Red Sox already have Rafael Devers. If signed, the Red Sox likely would view Urshela as a right-handed option at first base as an upgrade over Bobby Dalbec while providing insurance for Devers at the hot corner. Urshela fractured his pelvis in June and played only 62 games for the Angels in 2023.

Wed Feb 714:56Gio Urshela Has Offers From Angels, Marlins
Free-agent third baseman Gio Urshela has received contract offers from both the Los Angeles Angels and Miami Marlins. It was reported on Tuesday that Urshela was receiving interest from the Yankees, Mets, and Marlins but the Angels, Urshela's 2023 team, seemingly has significant interest in retaining him. The 32-year-old suffered a fractured pelvis last season and was limited to just 62 games. He hit a healthy .299 in that time but his power cratered as he slugged just two homers alongside a .288 xwOBA across 228 trips to the plate. However, Sanchez hit .285 with 13 home runs and 27 doubles with the 2022 Twins, production that led to a 119 wRC+ that grades out 19% superior to the league average. He is being viewed a significant bounce-back option for several clubs. He doesn't generate the type of power fantasy owners should be seeking at third base.

Tue Feb 614:05Three Teams Interested In Gio Urshela
Free-agent infielder Gio Urshela has drawn interest from the New York Mets, Miami Marlins and New York Yankees, according to a source. The 32-year-old veteran had a .703 OPS in 62 games with the Los Angeles Angels in 2023 before seeing his season come to an end in the middle of June due to a fractured left pelvis. Urshela didn't need surgery, though, and should be fine for the start of the 2024 regular season, barring any type of setback in spring training. He's probably going to have to settle for a one-year deal wherever he lands. In addition to his .703 OPS with the Angels, Urshela hit .299/.329/.374 with two home runs, 24 RBI, three steals and 22 runs scored last year before his season-ending injury. He possesses good bat-to-ball skills but little power for fantasy managers at the hot corner.

Thu Dec 14 202314:52Gio Urshela An Option For Blue Jays
Free-agent third baseman Gio Urshela is an option for the Toronto Blue Jays, a club with a hole at third base with Matt Chapman hitting the open market this winter. Chapman reuniting with the Blue Jays is still a possibility, but the club could also nab a far cheaper option in Urshela and platoon with him a left-handed bat. The veteran broke out with the Yankees in the 2019 season when he hit .314 with a career-high 21 homers and has largely been a rather productive bat since. However, his production, namely his power, took a dip last season. While he still hit an excellent .299, Urshela slugged just a pair of homers while dealing with injuries across 228 trips to the plate with the Angels. His solid combination of offense and defense should certainly be able to find him a new home, perhaps north of the border.

Tue Aug 8 202308:50Gio Urshela To Have A Normal Offseason
Los Angeles Angels infielder Gio Urshela (pelvis) sustained a left pelvis fracture back in June, and it was reported that he'd miss the rest of the 2023 season. As of Monday, though, the 31-year-old is no longer using crutches and is expected to go through a normal offseason, but he still won't return before the end of this year. Before hitting the injured list, Urshela batted .299 with a pair of home runs, 22 runs, 24 RBI, and three steals over 62 games. The eight-year veteran is a free agent heading into 2024 and shouldn't have trouble landing a big-league contract.

Wed Jun 21 202318:52Gio Urshela Likely To Miss Rest Of Season
Los Angeles Angels infielder Gio Urshela (pelvis) is expected to miss the rest of the season, according to manager Phil Nevin. The veteran infielder landed on the injured list over the weekend due to a left pelvis fracture. The good news is, Urshela won't need surgery, but he isn't expected to be able to play again this season. It's a tough blow as Urshela's defensive versatility was a beneficial asset to this roster. Michael Stefanic was recalled to take the spot on the roster, so possibly he gets more playing time going forward.

Fri Jun 16 202318:29Gio Urshela Heads To Injured List
Los Angeles Angels infielder Gio Urshela (hip) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday. The corner infielder was removed from Thursday's game after falling down while attempting to run out a grounder. The 31-year-old was seen using crutches, which is never a good sign. The Angels revealed that Urshela suffered a left pelvis fracture. It's uncertain how long this injury is going to sideline him. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Urshela back anytime soon. In a corresponding move, infielder Michael Stefanic has been recalled to take the spot on the active roster.

Fri Jun 16 202300:19Gio Urshela Exits Early With Hip Injury
Los Angeles Angels corner infielder Gio Urshela (hip) was removed from Thursday's game against the Texas Rangers in the first inning after falling down while running out a double-play ball. Urshela said after the game that he couldn't walk and both his hips and knee hurt. Urshela will likely miss some time, especially since he was just returning from back tightness that caused him to miss multiple games. The 31-year-old is batting .300, but isn't providing much else with just two homers and a .703 OPS. He doesn't need to be rostered in most leagues.

Wed Jun 14 202319:00Gio Urshela Remains Out On Wednesday
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Gio Urshela (back) remains out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Texas Rangers. The right-handed slugger has played in one game since being scratched last Friday due to back tightness. It's unclear if Urshela is going to need an injured list stint. It sounds like the Angels are just being extremely cautious with their 31-year-old slugger. Luis Rengifo covers second base, while Brandon Drury is at first base versus left-hander Andrew Heaney on Wednesday.

Fri Apr 14 202315:12Gio Urshela To Rest On Friday
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Gio Urshela (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Boston Red Sox. The right-handed slugger has been off to a hot start this season. He's hitting .341 with three RBI, so he's earned a day off. Luis Rengifo will cover shortstop duties while Brandon Drury plays second base and Jake Lamb makes a start at first base on Friday. Out of the trio. Drury has the most DFS value for Friday against right-hander Tanner Houck.

Tue Apr 4 202318:46Gio Urshela Gets Tuesday Off
Los Angeles Angels third baseman Gio Urshela (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Tuesday's game against the Seattle Mariners. This is a well deserved day off after Urshela started the first four games of the season. Luis Rengifo will cover third base and bat seventh versus right-hander Luis Castillo on Tuesday. The expectation is that Urshela will return to the lineup for their next game. He's off to a hot start this season, hitting .294 with two RBI in four games.

Fri Nov 18 202219:58Gio Urshela Traded To Angels
The Los Angeles Angels have acquired third baseman Gio Urshela from the Minnesota Twins, according to an announcement made by the team. Minnesota will receive minor league right-handed pitcher Alejandro Hidalgo in return. Urshela enjoyed a strong 2022 season at the plate, slashing .285/.338/.429 with a 119 wRC+ in 551 plate appearances across 144 games. While his natural position of third base is blocked in Los Angeles by Anthony Rendon, he is expected to garner playing time around the infield, and has a chance to be the starting shortstop for manager Phil Nevin, who coached Urshela when both were with the New York Yankees.

Tue Sep 13 202223:53Gio Urshela Homers, Reaches Base Four Times
Minnesota Twins third baseman Gio Urshela reached base in all four of his plate appearances in a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Royals Tuesday, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk. It was his 12th homer of the season and his first since August 12. Urshela now has a six-game hitting streak going with three multi-hit performances in that span. For the season, he's managed a serviceable .745 OPS with 48 runs scored, 54 RBI, and one steal. Urshela isn't a must for fantasy managers, but he's worth rostering during this hot streak.

Sat Jun 11 202213:27Gio Urshela Not In The Twins Lineup
Minnesota Twins third baseman Gio Urshela is not in the lineup on Saturday vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. This appears to be a routine day of rest for the 30-year-old. Jose Miranda is taking over at third base and batting third in his place. Urshela has been a solid contributor this season, rocking a .274/.330/.402 batting line with five home runs and 24 RBI across 179 at-bats.

Sat Jun 4 202212:00Gio Urshela Out Of The Lineup Saturday
Minnesota Twins third baseman Gio Urshela (foot) is not in the starting lineup on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. Urshela exited Friday's game against the Blue Jays early with a sprain in the mid-arch of his left foot, and he's being considered day-to-day for now. It's bad timing, too, as he was hitting .359 with two home runs in his last 10 games. Overall, the former Yankee is hitting .270/.330/.403 with five home runs, 23 RBI and 20 runs scored in 48 games in his first season with the Twins. Rookie Jose Miranda, who clobbered two home runs Friday night, is at third base and is hitting fifth against Jays right-hander Jose Berrios on Saturday. Miranda is hitting just .185 in his first 23 big-league games, but he does have four homers and 10 RBI in 81 at-bats.

Fri Jun 3 202221:01Gio Urshela Leaves With Injury Friday
Minnesota Twins third baseman Gio Urshela was removed from his team's game against the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night. Urshela appeared to injure himself during a pickoff play during the contest. He was replaced at third base by Jose Miranda with Luis Arraez entering the game to play first base. Urshela went 1-for-2 with a double before departing. Look for the Twins to update his status after the game on Friday night.

Tue May 17 202214:38Gio Urshela On The Bench Tuesday
Minnesota Twins infielder Gio Urshela isn't starting on Tuesday. The Twins will take on the Oakland Athletics and right-handed starter James Kaprielian but will do so with Urshela on the bench. The infielder is batting .226 with a .280 on-base percentage and three home runs in 118 plate appearances this season. Instead, Jose Miranda is starting at third base and hitting eighth on Tuesday. The third baseman is batting .104 with a .140 on-base percentage and a home run in 50 plate appearances this season. Fantasy managers looking for streaming options on Tuesday are probably better off looking elsewhere.

Sat May 7 202212:38Gio Urshela Starting Saturday's Game On The Bench
Minnesota Twins third baseman Gio Urshela is absent from Saturday's starting lineup, according to MLB.com. The 30-year-old is struggling again this season, slashing .241/.311/.304 with one home run, nine runs, and six RBI. He'll hand things over to Ryan Jeffers in the lineup, who's catching and batting eighth. Jeffers is batting just .220 but is slugging .441 with three home runs in 19 games. Across his 130 career games, the 24-year-old has 20 round-trippers. Fantasy managers needing a source of power from the catcher position can take a shot on Ryan Jeffers off of the waiver wire.
