Cincinnati Reds infielder Matt Reynolds cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Louisville on Thursday. Reynolds has the option to decline the outright assignment and become a free agent after he was designated for assignment last Friday to make room on the 40-man roster for right-hander Luke Weaver. The 32-year-old will simply serve as organizational infield depth for the Reds if he remains in the organization. Reynolds spent 2022 with the Reds and New York Mets, hitting .246/.320/.332 with a .652 OPS, three home runs, 23 RBI, 31 runs scored and five stolen bases in 272 plate appearances and 93 games (only one with the Mets).

Reynolds has officially been added to the Mets' NLDS roster Monday.

Reynolds will replace Ruben Tejada on the Mets' NLDS roster now that he's officially done for the season because of a broken fibula suffered in Game 2. If he were to receive the start at shortstop Monday, it would represent his major league debut.

Reynolds, who had been out with a strained elbow since June 25, played shortstop for Triple-A Las Vegas on Thursday, Adam Rubin of ESPN New York reports.

Reynolds got off to a tremendous start before slumping for a while. Heading into Thursday's contest, he has a .270/.327/.410 line with five home runs and 48 runs batted in over 300 at-bats for the 51s. Reynolds could be the next in line at shortstop, now that Wilmer Flores has shown he is better suited for second base and Ruben Tejada is the incumbent.

Reynolds went 4-for-5 with three runs scored for Triple-A Las Vegas to lift his average to .317.

Reynolds has a .371/.367/.561 line for the 51s to start the season. He was bypassed for Eric Campbell and Danny Muno when David Wright (hamstring) went down so he could play daily in the minors. If Wilmer Flores struggles or he or Daniel Murphy go down to injury, Reynolds is likely next in line to get the call and see substantial playing time.

Reynolds is battling Danny Muno and Ruben Tejada for the role. Through Sunday, Reynolds is hitting .381with two home runs in 42 at-bats while Muno has the same batting average with one home run in an identical number of at-bats. Tejada is at .277 with no homers in 47 at-bats. Reynolds is the best offensively of the trio while Tejada is best defensively, but Reynolds may have the edge due to upside potential.

Reynolds may head north with the team if Daniel Murphy (foot) lands on the disabled list, North Jersey.com reports.

Reynolds is to begin the season in Triple-A if Murphy (hamstring) and Wilmer Flores (foot) are healthy by Opening Day. However, it's looking more and more likely that Murphy could start the year on the disabled list, missing at least the first six games of the season. That would enable Reynolds and/or Danny Muno to play second base until Murphy returns.
