Mon Feb 2618:04Ross Stripling's Spring Debut Pushed Back
Oakland Athletics right-hander Ross Stripling (finger) was originally scheduled to make his Cactus League debut with his new team on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but he is being pushed back a few days with what manager Mark Kotsay described as a minor cut on his right index finger. Instead, Mitch Spence, a Rule 5 draft pick, replaced Stripling on the mound. The injury to Stripling's finger doesn't sound serious at all. The 34-year-old is locked into Oakland's starting rotation in 2024 after being acquired in a trade with the San Francisco Giants. He'll be moving to another pitcher-friendly environment, but that's about where the positives end. Stripling doesn't miss many bats and won't get much run support from the A's offense. He's outside of RotoBaller's top-100 fantasy starting pitchers.

Fri Feb 220:01Alex Wood, Ross Stripling Viewed As Starters
Oakland Athletics general manager David Forst said that left-hander Alex Wood and right-hander Ross Stripling are viewed as starters with spring training right around the corner. In addition to Wood and Stripling, Paul Blackburn and JP Sears are at the top of the team's rotation for 2024. The A's signed Wood to a one-year, $8.5 million deal last weekend. The 33-year-old veteran southpaw pitched in a hybrid role with the Giants in 2023 and had a 4.33 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, 74 K's and 42 walks in 97 2/3 frames. Oakland's pitcher-friendly ballpark should help, but Wood has very limited fantasy appeal with diminished velocity and stuff. He'll only be useful in deep AL-only leagues. Stripling was acquired in a trade with the Giants on Friday. He disappointed in San Fran with a 5.36 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, 70 K's and 16 innings as a swingman. Like Wood, Stripling has very little fantasy upside.

Fri Feb 214:28Ross Stripling Dealt To A's
The San Francisco Giants have traded pitcher Ross Stripling to the Oakland A's in exchange for infielder/outfielder Jonah Cox. The veteran right-hander authored a 5.36 ERA across 22 outings (11 starts) with the Giants in the 2023 season but also tossed a 3.01 ERA across 32 appearances (24 starts) with the Blue Jays as recently as the 2022 campaign. Stripling's biggest asset is his control as he has walked just 5.5% of the batters he has faced in his big-league career despite punching out only 21.9% of the batters he has faced. All told, the 34-year-old owns a 3.96 ERA across 226 MLB outings (115 starts) in stints with the Dodgers, Blue Jays, and Giants.

Sat Jan 2712:19Ross Stripling Working On New Pitch
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling is working on a new pitch for the 2024 season -- the deathball, which is a type of gyro slider that is designed to drop late. The pitch looked filthy while Stripling was throwing it live on Thursday while he worked out north of Houston. Stripling said he's looking for more swing and miss with the pitch. The 34-year-old veteran struggled in his first year in the Bay Area in 2023, going 0-5 with a 5.36 ERA (5.21 FIP) and 1.35 WHIP while walking 16 and striking out 70 in only 89 innings pitched over 22 appearances (11 starts). At least while Robbie Ray (elbow) is recovering from Tommy John surgery in the first half of the 2024 season, Stripling should be included in San Fran's starting rotation, but with a career 21.9% strikeout rate, he's going to need to start missing more bats to give fantasy managers more upside as a matchup-based streamer.

Mon Nov 6 202318:22Ross Stripling Opts To Stay With Giants
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling exercised his $12.5 million player option for the 2024 season over the weekend. After signing a two-year, $25 million deal before the 2023 season, Stripling went 0-5 with a 5.36 ERA (5.21 FIP), 1.35 WHIP, 16 walks and 70 strikeouts in 89 innings over 22 outings (11 starts) in his first year in the Bay Area. The 33-year-old will look to bounce back in 2024. He was much better in 2022 with the Toronto Blue Jays, as he posted a 3.01 ERA (3.11 FIP) and 1.02 WHIP with 20 walks and 111 strikeouts in a career-high 134 1/3 frames over 32 appearances (24 starts). But his strikeout rate dipped from 20.7 percent in 2022 to just 18.4 percent this year, and his walk rate also went the wrong direction from 3.7 percent to 4.2 percent.

Mon Aug 28 202321:19Ross Stripling Throws Bullpen Monday
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling (back) threw a bullpen session on Monday ahead of his team's home game against the Cincinnati Reds. Stripling reportedly made it through the session without any issues. The 33-year-old has been on the injured list since August 19 with a back strain. He has made 19 appearances for the Giants this season, compiling a 0-5 record, 5.29 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and 61 strikeouts spanning 78 1/3i innings of work. He could be back with the team in the near future assuming he doesn't suffer any setbacks.

Sat Aug 19 202321:26Ross Stripling Lands On The 15-Day Injured List
The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Ross Stripling (back) on the 15-day injured list with a mild-back strain on Saturday. Sean Hjelle was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Stripling experienced back soreness on Friday, and the injury was severe enough to warrant a trip to the injured list. The 33-year-old has struggled this season, posting a 5.29 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, and a 61: 11 K: BB across 78 1/3 innings. Stripling will miss at least the next two weeks, and fantasy managers who held onto him in deep leagues can move on from the veteran.

Sat Jul 1 202322:29Ross Stripling Will Start Sunday Versus The Mets
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling will start Sunday's game against the New York Mets. The 33-year-old was activated from the injured list on June 25. He will make his first on Sunday for the first time since May 7. He owns a 6.88 ERA, 1.56 WHIP, and a 29: 10 K: BB across 35 1/3 innings in 2023. Stripling has struggled this season, and it is tough to trust him as a streamer for Sunday's matchup versus New York. He is not expected to be limited and won't be on a pitch count. Fantasy managers should take a wait-and-see approach with Stripling before inserting him into their staring lineups on Sunday.

Sun Jun 25 202316:04Giants Activate Ross Stripling
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling (back) was activated from the injured list on Sunday. The 33-year-old had been out since mid-May because of lower-back tightness and has been working his way back since. He struggled before going down, amassing a 7.24 ERA in just over 32 innings of work, so his fantasy stock isn't high. In a corresponding move, the team placed reliever Luke Jackson on the 15-day injured list with a back issue of his own.

Thu Jun 22 202309:24Ross Stripling's Next Rehab Start Coming On Thursday
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling (back) is set to throw in a rehab game on Thursday with Single-A San Jose, according to MLB.com. It'll be his third rehab appearance as he tries to work his way back from lower-back tightness that has kept him on the shelf since his last start on May 17. If all goes well, fantasy managers can expect Stripling to return at some point in June. Before the injury, the 32-year-old was putting up disappointing numbers, posting a 7.24 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, and 17.8% strikeout rate over 32.1 innings after producing solid numbers in 2022. Stripling has had limited fantasy value for the past few seasons, but he's almost irrelevant right now without decent rate stats.

Tue May 23 202312:09Ross Stripling Dealing With Grade 1 Back Strain
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Ross Stripling (back) left his May 17 start against the Philadelphia Phillies with lower-back tightness, and an MRI exam showed a Grade 1 strain, which forced him to the 15-day injured list on May 19. Stripling was expected to rest over the weekend before being re-evaluated after that. He stayed back in San Francisco to rehab while the team started a road trip this week. The 33-year-old right-hander will be eligible to return to San Fran's starting rotation in early June, but he hasn't been much of an option in fantasy so far this year and he could end up being moved to the bullpen. Through his first nine outings (five starts), Stripling has a 7.24 ERA (6.72 FIP), 1.58 WHIP, 10 walks and 26 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings pitched.

Fri May 19 202312:51Ross Stripling Lands On Injured List
The San Francisco Giants placed right-hander Ross Stripling (back) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 18) with a lower-back strain on Friday and selected right-hander Ryan Walker's contract from Triple-A Sacramento in a corresponding move. Stripling exited his last start early with the back injury and will now be forced to miss at least the next two weeks. Fantasy managers in deep-mixed leagues shouldn't feel compelled to hold onto the 33-year-old right-hander, as he hasn't been very good in nine appearances (five starts) in 2023. Stripling is currently 0-2 with a bloated 7.24 ERA (6.73 FIP), 1.58 WHIP, 10 walks and 26 strikeouts in 32 1/3 innings pitched. There's a chance he'll return to a relief role later this month or in early June.

Wed May 17 202318:26Ross Stripling Removed Early On Wednesday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Ross Stripling (back) was pulled early during Wednesday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. The severity of the injury is unknown, but it appears Stripling is dealing with lower back tightness. He allowed three runs over 3 1/3 innings of work before exiting the contest. It's possible that this injury could result in Stripling heading to the injured list. That means, Sean Manaea could be asked to rejoin the starting rotation, but fantasy managers will have to wait and see the extent of Stripling's injury.

Wed May 17 202309:30Ross Stripling To Make Wednesday's Start
San Francisco Giants right-hander Ross Stripling is the scheduled starter for Wednesday's game when his club takes on Taijuan Walker and the Philadelphia Phillies, according to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle. The former fifth-round pick hasn't started a game since May 7 and has been in and out of the rotation all year. Through eight games (four starts), Stripling has posted a 7.14 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 18.3% strikeout rate over 29 innings. It comes after a dominant 2022 season, in which he pitched to a 3.01 ERA with the Toronto Blue Jays. With Sean Manaea regulated to the bullpen after another poor start on Tuesday, Stripling might get a chance to stick in the rotation, though it doesn't add much to his fantasy value and fantasy managers should leave him on the wire in all leagues for now.

Tue May 2 202312:50Ross Stripling Strikes Out Five In Monday's Start
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Ross Stripling picked up a no-decision in Monday's 7-3 loss to the Houston Astros when he allowed two runs on five hits while walking none and striking out five over his five innings of work. Stripling has now had back-to-back impressive starts for the Gigantes. Three of his six appearances so far in 2023 have been out of the bullpen, and he's currently sporting a bloated 6.10 ERA (6.20 FIP), 1.45 WHIP, five walks and 19 strikeouts in his 20 2/3 innings pitched. With left-hander Alex Wood (hamstring) on the injured list, Stripling looks primed to remain in the team's starting rotation, which makes him valuable in deep-mixed and NL-only fantasy leagues.

Tue Dec 13 202213:05Giants, Ross Stripling Agree On Two-Year Deal
The San Francisco Giants and free-agent right-hander Ross Stripling agreed on a two-year, $25 million deal on Tuesday that includes an opt-out clause after the first season, according to sources familiar with the deal. The 33-year-old was excellent for the Toronto Blue Jays last season, going 10-4 with a 3.01 ERA (3.11 FIP), a 1.02 WHIP and a 20.7 percent strikeout rate in 134 1/3 innings over 32 appearances (24 starts). The Giants have now signed left-hander Sean Manaea and Stripling in recent days, perhaps signaling that they won't be bringing back All-Star southpaw Carlos Rodon in 2023 and beyond. The New York Yankees are believed to be making a strong push to secure Rodon. Stripling will return to the National League West, where he four full seasons from 2016-19 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Wed Aug 17 202214:41Ross Stripling Reinstated From Injured List
The Toronto Blue Jays reinstated right-handed pitcher Ross Stripling (hip) from the 15-day injured list on Wednesday. Right-handed reliever Trent Thornton was optioned to Triple-A to make room on the active roster. Stripling is set to start Toronto's game on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles. The 32-year-old has made 23 appearances for the Blue Jays this season, 15 of which have been starts. He's pitched to a 3.16 ERA, a 3.02 FIP, and 67 strikeouts in 82.2 innings while allowing just 15 walks and six home runs.

Mon Aug 8 202220:54Ross Stripling Throws Bullpen Sunday
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Ross Stripling (hip) threw a bullpen session on Sunday. Provided he continues to show improvement, Stripling is next slated to throw either live batting practice or head off to a rehab assignment. The 32-year-old hurler landed on the injured list on August 3 after he strained his right hip following a July 30. Stripling has made 23 appearances for Toronto in 2022, posting a 5-3 record, 3.16 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, and 67 strikeouts over 82 2/3 innings of work. It looks like he could be back with the Blue Jays in the next week or two if all goes according to plan.

Wed Aug 3 202213:38Ross Stripling Goes On Injured List
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Ross Stripling (glute) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Wednesday with a right glute strain and Matt Peacock was recalled in a corresponding move. Manager John Schneider said the hope is that Stripling requires only a short recovery time. Fantasy managers will be hoping that the 32-year-old veteran will be able to return when eligible in mid-August. New pitcher Mitch White looks like the leading candidate to take Stripling's place in the starting rotation. Stripling is worth stashing in the majority of fantasy leagues, as he's gone 5-3 with a 3.16 ERA (3.02 FIP), a 1.10 WHIP, one save, 67 strikeouts and 15 walks in 82 2/3 frames over 23 appearances (15 starts) for the Blue Jays this year.

Wed Jun 22 202218:31Ross Stripling Gives Up One Run Against White Sox
Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Ross Stripling has looked impressive since moving into the starting rotation. The 32-year-old continued his success on Wednesday against the Chicago White Sox. He went six innings, allowing one run, one walk, and five strikeouts in the victory. Stripling has been solid in three of his four starts since entering the starting rotation. To be fair, Stripling hasn't pitched against many capable offenses, but regardless he has looked good. He should be a decent streaming option against the Boston Red Sox during his next start.
