Kubtiza is being worked out at second base for the first time in his career, MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez reports.

He won't appear at the keystone this season, as there is not enough time for him to learn the position from scratch, but it could be an option for the 25-year-old down the line. The move would make sense, as Kubitza's bat projects to be average at best for a third baseman, so if he could handle second base that would better fit his offensive skill set. Kaleb Cowart seems to be the team's preferred option at third base heading into next year, so second base may be Kubitza's best shot at making the team out of camp in 2016.

Kubitza was recalled from Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday, Eric Stephen of SB Nation reports.

A third-round pick by the Braves in 2011, Kubitza flopped in a 16-game audition with the Angels earlier this season, going 7-for-35 (.200 average) with zero extra-base hits and 15 strikeouts. Chances are, he will merely provide depth at third base and in the corner outfield over the final month, perhaps seeing a spot start here or there.

Kubitza was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on Tuesday.

Kubitza was the odd-man out in the Angels' outfield after the club activated Shane Victorino and recalled Efren Navarro. He'll head back down to Triple-A, where he has batted .276 with five home runs in 315 at-bats this season.

David Freese's broken finger landed him on the disabled list Thursday, which led to Kubitza's call-up from Triple-A Salt Lake. Kubitza and Taylor Featherston could both wind up seeing time at third base in Freese's absence, but the newly-added Conor Gillaspie could see a lot of time at the hot corner as well once he's added to the active roster. In 30 at-bats with the Angels this season, Kubitza has collected six hits and one RBI while striking out an unsightly 13 times in that span.

Kubitza failed to impress at the plate while Freese was sidelined with a similar injury in May, recording just six hits in 31 at-bats, but manager Mike Scioscia said he is confident that Kubitza will be able to help the team with his bat. “Although he didn’t light it up offensively (last time in the majors), you can see there is potential there,” Scioscia told the Orange County Register. Taylor Featherston is in the starting lineup in place of Freese on Thursday.

Kubitza is in the lineup Saturday against Oakland.

Kubitza has gotten off to a 6-for-20 start for his big league career and is yet to strike out. He'll bat eighth in the order against Jesse Hahn and fill in for David Freese at third base.

Kubitza went 2-for-3 in his major league debut Wednesday against the Rays.

Kubitza's success Wednesday was confined to the batter's box, as a late decision to throw to second base in the second inning led to a run crossing the plate before the final out of could be recorded, and he was thrown out trying to go from first to third on a single. David Freese (hamstring) was able to pinch-hit in the contest, which could mean that Kubitza's time in the majors will be short-lived, but there has been no word on who will start at third base against the Rays on Thursday.

The favorable hitting conditions Kubitza has played in all season should force owners to temper their expectations for the Angels' third baseman of the future. However, the 24-year-old will probably force his way to the big leagues later this season and is poised to take over as the everyday third baseman in 2016. This is not a player who will hit for enough power to be a top-10 fantasy option at the position, but he should offer solid across-the-board production, especially if he can work his way into a favorable spot in the Angels' lineup thanks to a solid approach at the plate.
