Rowen was excellent at every stop in the minors, going 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP in 46.2 innings for Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk and Iowa. The Cubs' variety of trades necessitated an opening on their active roster. Their loss is the Blue Jays' gain, as they continue to re-stock their bullpen in the majors and now the minors.

The team purchased Rowen's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday but the right-hander did not end up making an appearance. Rowen has posted a 1.93 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in 34 appearances between Double-A and Triple-A this season, and while he doesn't have the swing-and-miss stuff of a back-end arm, he does have very good control (2.0 BB/9 in minors).

The Cubs optioned Dallas Beeler back to Triple-A and placed Neil Ramirez (abdominal) on the DL on Wednesday, so to fill those two roster spots Rowen and Yoervis Medina will come up from Iowa. Rowen, who signed a minor league deal with the Cubs earlier this month after spending time with the Orioles, holds a 1.93 ERA in 34 combined appearances at Double and Triple-A this season.

Rowen was traded to the Orioles on Thursday, Dan Connolly of the Baltimroe Sun reports.

The 26-year-old Rowen doesn't appear to be much more than organizational bullpen depth, given that he struck out just 31 batters over 47 innings for Triple-A Round Rock last season. He has posted consistently excellent BB/9 marks throughout the minor leagues, but there's still very little to be excited about.

Rowen was reassigned to minor league camp Thursday, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports.

The Dodgers signed Rowen to a minor league deal in January and invited him to big league camp for spring training, all while knowing that he wouldn't be an option to start the year after undergoing Thoracic Outlet Syndrome surgery in November. Rowen just faced live pitching for the first time since the procedure Wednesday. He could be a middle-relief option once back at full strength.

An influx of injuries to the Rangers' pitching staff allowed Rowen to make his MLB debut for the club in 2014, during which he supplied a 4.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP over eight relief outings. The 26-year-old submarine pitcher relies more on inducing weak contact rather than striking batters out, limiting his upside even if he somehow manages to win a bullpen gig with the Dodgers at some point this season.

Rowen was released by the Rangers on Friday.

It should only be a matter of time before the 26-year-old right-hander latches on elsewhere. While he struggled to a 4.15 ERA and 1.62 WHIP in eight appearances with the big club last season, Rowen has a 1.72 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 3.50 GO/AO in the minors, including 2.39 ERA and 1.01 WHIP at Triple-A.

The Rangers designated Rowen for assignment Tuesday.

Scott Barnes was DFA'd along with Rowen, with the Rangers needing to free up a couple roster spots for the likes of Kyuji Fujikawa and Colby Lewis. Rowen was just mediocre in his first audition at the major league level last season (4.15 ERA), but he has a whopping 3.50 GO/AO ratio in the minors (five seasons). Chances are, another team will gladly take him off waivers.
