Sat Aug 14 202121:46Blue Jays Acquire Mallex Smith From Reds
Cincinnati Reds outfielder Mallex Smith has been traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations. The speed outfielder has bounced around lately, but could be an asset to the Blue Jays. He played 22 games in Triple-A with the Reds organization, but could see some time in Toronto. As of right now, he'll be quality outfield depth and a possible base stealing threat for later in the season. Fantasy managers can ignore this move.

Mon May 3 202103:13Royals love to run -- and they've raced to MLB's top mark
Whit Merrifield made his big league debut for Kansas City in 2016, the season after the Royals won the World Series. Five years later, he's trying to lead another resurgence for a team whose identity should be pretty familiar by now. The Royals are still trying to beat teams on the basepaths. Merrifield already has eight stolen bases, tied for the major league lead. As a team, Kansas City has 22 steals. Only San Diego has more. That's despite the fact that Adalberto Mondesi, last year's major league leader in steals, hasn't played for the Royals in 2021 because of an oblique injury. That's not to say the Royals can't hit for power. Carlos Santana and Salvador Perez have six homers each. Jorge Soler is off to a slow start this year, but he went deep 48 times just two seasons ago. Kansas City (16-10) has the best record in baseball, although that note comes with a word of caution: The Royals have been outscored by three runs on the season. They won their first six one-run games before finally... [More]

Wed Nov 4 202017:52Catcher Bruce Maxwell to attend spring training with Mets
NEW YORK (AP) — Catcher Bruce Maxwell, the only major league player to kneel during the national anthem in 2017 to protest racial injustice, has agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets for next year and will report to major league spring training. Maxwell was in the major leagues with Oakland from 2016-18 and spent 2019 with Mexico’s Acereros de Monclova. He signed a minor league deal with the Mets last July 30 and was at their alternate training site in Brooklyn. Maxwell, who turns 30 on Dec. 20, has a .240 average, 22 doubles, five homers and 42 RBIs in 127 games. He was among nine minor league free agents who agreed to minor league deals and will report to big league spring training, joined by right-handers Arodys Vizcaíno, Oscar De La Cruz and Harol González; outfielders Mallex Smith and Johneshwy Fargas; infielders José Peraza and Jake Hager; and catcher David Rodríguez. In addition, infielders Luis Carpio and Mitchell Tolman agreed to minor league contracts without spring training invites. Vizcaíno, 29, is 13-11 with 50 saves and a 3.01 ERA in seven seasons with Atlanta and the Chicago Cubs, the last in 2019. Peraza, 26, hit .225 with eight doubles, one homer and eight RBI in 120 plate appearances with Boston this season and is a six-year big league veteran. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Thu Jul 23 202017:03Mariners sign Shaw, place Murphy on IL ahead of opener
SEATTLE (AP) — The Seattle Mariners signed right-handed pitcher Brian Shaw and placed catcher Tom Murphy on the 10-day injured list on Thursday in setting their 30-man roster for the start of the regular season. Shaw was released by the Colorado Rockies earlier this week. The veteran made 70 appearances with a 5.38 ERA last season with Colorado.Seattle’s bullpen is one of its major concerns going into the 60-game season, and the Mariners will start the season without veteran Yoshihisa Hirano, who is also on the injured list after having tested positive for COVID-19 last month. Seattle will owe Shaw $208,704 of his prorated salary of $3,333,333, with the Rockies responsible for the rest. Murphy was diagnosed with a broken bone in his left foot on Wednesday, leaving the Mariners with only Austin Nola and Joe Hudson as their catchers going into the regular season. Seattle also optioned outfielder Jake Fraley to its taxi squad, leaving one of the outfield positions a question mark going into the opener. Seattle will likely use a mix of Tim Lopes, José Marmolejos, Dylan Moore and Dee Gordon with Mallex Smith and Kyle Lewis the other outfield starters. ___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Wed Apr 15 202019:36Baker laments lack of blacks in MLB on Jackie Robinson Day
Houston manager Dusty Baker celebrated Jackie Robinson’s legacy on the 73rd anniversary of the fall of the major league color barrier and lamented the lack of African Americans in today’s game. “It’s frustrating because we’ve talked about it forever ... but it seems like the numbers are dwindling instead of increasing," Baker said Wednesday.Only 7.7% of big league players on opening day rosters last year were African American, down from 17% in 1990. Baker and Dodgers manager Dave Roberts are the only two African American managers in the majors.Baker appreciates that the league is making a “conscious effort" to get more young African Americans involved in baseball through programs like Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities and is optimistic there can be a turnaround in the upcoming years. “Hopefully in this decade and the next decade there will be more guys that get a chance,” Baker said. “All they need is a chance. A lot of guys have been bypassed and overlooked.”Robinson broke the color barrier... [More]

Sat Jan 11 202000:21Mariners reach deals with Haniger, Smith, Tuivailala
SEATTLE (AP) — The Mariners avoided arbitration after reaching agreements Friday with outfielders Mitch Haniger and Mallex Smith and pitcher Sam Tuivailala on contracts for the upcoming season. The three were Seattle's only arbitration-eligible players. Haniger agreed to $3.01 million, Smith $2.35 million and Tuivailala $800,000. Haniger was the most notable of the three. He missed the final 3 1/2 months last season after rupturing a testicle and then having back issues during his recovery. Haniger was limited to 63 games and batted .220 with 15 homers and 32 RBIs. A year earlier, Haniger was an All-Star after hitting .285 with 26 homers and 93 RBIs and an OPS of .859. Smith slumped last season after a breakout year in 2018. He hit just .227 with a .300 on-base percentage and struck out a career-high 141 times. The upside with Smith was his speed on the bases as he led the majors with 42 stolen bases. Tuivailala missed the first half of last season while recovering from a torn Achilles... [More]
