Sat Mar 212:52Joey Wendle Has Shoulder Soreness
New York Mets infielder Joey Wendle (shoulder) is dealing with some right-shoulder soreness in camp, but he's been building back up and should make his spring training debut toward the end of next week. He's in his first year in New York in 2024 after hitting a weak .212/.248/.306 with two homers, 20 RBI, seven stolen bases and 33 runs scored in 318 plate appearances and 112 games for the Miami Marlins in 2023. The 33-year-old's greatest asset is his glove and his ability to play multiple infield positions, but he's not much to look at in fantasy with his bat. Even with Ronny Mauricio (knee) slated to miss the entire season, Wendle will most likely serve as a utility infielder for the Mets. Most of his playing time will likely come at third base to spell youngster Brett Baty.

Thu Nov 30 202300:10Joey Wendle Agrees With Mets
Free-agent utility infielder Joey Wendle and the New York Mets agreed on a one-year, $2 million deal on Wednesday, pending a physical, according to sources familiar with the deal. Wendle was an All-Star with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021 before spending the last two years with the Miami Marlins. But he's only a career .263 hitter with 32 home runs in eight big-league seasons, and his worst season came in 2023 when he hit .212/.248/.306 with two home runs, 20 RBI, 16 doubles, seven stolen bases and 33 runs scored in 112 games played for the Fish. The 33-year-old left-handed hitter stands at 6-foot-1 and 195 pounds and will mainly serve the Mets with his glove and defensive versatility for the upcoming 2024 campaign.

Tue Aug 29 202314:51Joey Wendle, Nick Fortes Sitting On Tuesday
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle and catcher Nick Fortes are starting on the bench on Tuesday against the visiting Tampa Bay Rays. Jon Berti is starting at shortstop and batting ninth, while Jacob Stalling is doing the catching and hitting eighth against Rays right-hander Aaron Civale. Wendle has struggled offensive in 2023 in his second year in Miami, slashing .229/.264/.325 with a homer, 16 RBI, five stolen bases and 29 runs scored in 90 games. Fortes, meanwhile, has been even worse. The third-year backstop is batting .213 (53-for-249) with five home runs, seven doubles, 22 RBI, three stolen bases and 27 runs scored in 90 games played.

Mon Aug 14 202315:37Jesus Sanchez, Joey Wendle Out Against Southpaw
Miami Marlins outfielder Jesus Sanchez and infielder Joey Wendle are both starting on the bench on Monday with the club facing Houston Astros left-hander Framber Valdez. Avisail Garcia is starting in left field and is batting seventh, while Jon Berti will handle shortstop and hit in the nine-hole on Monday against Valdez. Sanchez is hitting .280 against left-handed hurlers this year, but he's faced them only 27 times in 2023 and will likely continue to sit when the team faces a southpaw. Wendle, meanwhile, is pretty much in the same boat as Sanchez when it comes to facing lefties. The 33-year-old has faced them 25 times this year and has gone 6-for-23 (.261) with no home runs or RBI.

Wed Jul 5 202314:53Jesus Sanchez, Joey Wendle Sitting Out Wednesday
Miami Marlins outfielder Jesus Sanchez and infielder Joey Wendle are both sitting out on Wednesday against the visiting St. Louis Cardinals and left-hander Matthew Liberatore. Jorge Soler is starting in right field and batting second, while Jon Berti will handle shortstop and hit ninth in the batting order against Liberatore. Sanchez is hitting .294 against lefties in 2023, but it's come in a small sample size of only 17 at-bats. He's currently riding a modest five-game hitting streak that has seen him go 7-for-18 (.389) with two homers and eight RBI. Wendle, who also hits from the left side of the plate, is hitting .455 against southpaws, but in only 11 at-bats in 2023. He's gone 11-for-31 (.355) with no homers or RBI in his last eight games played.

Thu Jun 15 202309:24Joey Wendle Suffering From Groin Injury
Miami Marlins shortstop Joey Wendle (groin) has been out of the lineup for the past three games as he deals with a left adductor issue, according to MLB.com. He was available off the bench on Wednesday, though, so it seems like he'll avoid an injured list stint and return to the lineup soon. Across 33 games this season, Wendle is slashing .239/.302/.386 with one homer, 11 runs, six RBI, and a pair of stolen bases. The 33-year-old's lackluster production makes him irrelevant in almost all fantasy leagues, but when he is back, utility man Jon Berti will likely move back to a part-time role.

Sun May 7 202313:35Joey Wendle Activated From The 10-Day Injured List
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle was activated from the 10-day injured list on Sunday after missing a month with an oblique issue. The veteran infielder appeared in just four games and didn't record a hit before hitting the injured list in early April. Wendle isn't starting on Sunday against the Cubs but he should be available off the bench. Infielder Xavier Edwards was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville in a corresponding move. There's not much, if any, fantasy appeal here.

Tue Apr 25 202308:58Joey Wendle Could Begin Rehab Soon
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (intercostal) went through a full workout on Monday, and according to MLB.com, the plan is for the 32-year-old to begin a rehab assignment in a couple of days. Wendle played in just four games before being shut down with a right intercostal strain and had no hits over nine plate appearances this season. The former Tampa Bay Ray can handle the bat, with a career .270 average, and knows how to run the bases, swiping 12 bags over 101 games in 2022. Wendle won't be a big difference-maker when he returns, but fantasy managers looking for a cheap source of batting average and speed can pick him up when he's back.

Mon Apr 24 202312:01Joey Wendle Should Start Rehab Assignment Soon
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (intercostal) took ground balls before the team's game against the Cleveland Guardians on Sunday. Wendle said there are a couple more boxes for him to check still, but he should be starting a minor-league rehab assignment soon. He has been on the injured list since April 4 with a right intercostal strain after he was scratched from the lineup on April 3 against the Minnesota Twins. With Wendle out, Jon Berti has been seeing most of the starts at shortstop for the Marlins. Before landing on the injured list, the 32-year-old veteran played in just four games for the Fish and went hitless in nine plate appearances with a walk and two strikeouts. He'll be looking for his first hit in 2023 when he returns to the active roster.

Tue Apr 4 202315:04Marlins Put Johnny Cueto, Joey Wendle On Injured List
The Miami Marlins placed starting pitcher Johnny Cueto (biceps) on the 15-day injured list and infielder Joey Wendle (intercostal) on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday. Cueto is dealing with right biceps tightness after leaving his start early on Monday, while Wendle is sidelined with a right intercostal strain. Pitchers Braxton Garrett and Daniel Castano, second baseman Garrett Hampson have been recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville, while pitcher Jeff Lindgren was designated for assignment. With the 37-year-old Cueto on the shelf, Garrett could slide into his place in Miami's starting rotation. Wendle could miss the rest of April, depending on how he recovers. In the meantime, Jon Berti should see most of the time at the 6.

Wed Jan 11 202300:47Joey Wendle On Red Sox's Radar
The Athletic's Chad Jennings reported Tuesday that the Boston Red Sox have Miami Marlins' infielder Joey Wendle on their radar as a potential external option to fill in for Trevor Story (elbow) as he recovers from an internal bracing procedure of the UCL in his right elbow. The 33-year-old bats left-handed and spent time at second base, shortstop, and third base in 2022. Offensively, he slashed .259/.297/.360 with three home runs, 32 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 371 plate appearances. A move from the Marlins' lineup to the Red Sox's wouldn't be a huge upgrade, and Wendle's fantasy value is almost solely derived from his stolen base potential.

The Miami Marlins activated outfielder Avisail Garcia (hamstring), infielder Joey Wendle (hamstring) and pitcher Tommy Nance (groin) from the injured list on Thursday. Fri Sep 23 202216:32Joey Wendle Expects To Return This Season
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (hamstring) will resume running on Friday and said he expects to return this season despite going on the injured list for a hamstring injury. Wendle was put on the injured list on Monday with left hamstring tendonitis, and he'll be eligible to return on Sept. 29. But with so little time left in the regular season, fantasy managers in single-year leagues can likely toss him aside to the waiver wire the rest of the way. The 32-year-old left-handed hitter had trouble staying healthy in his first year in Miami, and he currently has a slash line of .258/.297/.366 with only three home runs, 31 RBI, 26 runs scored and 12 stolen bases in his 325 at-bats.

Thu Sep 22 202217:45Joey Wendle Placed On Injured List
The Miami Marlins placed infielder Joey Wendle (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Thursday with left hamstring tendonitis. The Fish also put left-hander Trevor Rogers (lat) on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain and recalled pitchers Braxton Garrett and Peyton Burdick from Triple-A Jacksonville. Garrett will likely start on Friday. Wendle's IL stint is retroactive to Sept. 19. The 32-year-old veteran had missed the team's last three games, and with time running out in the 2022 season, he may have played his last game in 2022. Expect to see Jordan Groshans and Charles Leblanc battle for playing time in Miami's infield with Wendle on the shelf. Wendle has played in only 95 games in his first year in Miami, hitting .258/.297/.366 with only three home runs, 31 RBI, 26 runs and 12 stolen bases in 348 plate appearances.

Wed Sep 21 202216:05Joey Wendle Remains Out Wednesday
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle remains out of the starting lineup on Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs. Wendle has been banged up of late and will sit for the third straight game. Fantasy managers should consider the 32-year-old to be day-to-day. It's a shame, since he's been hot in the month of September, hitting .313 (15-for-48) with a homer, four RBI, five runs scored and two stolen bases in 15 games played. With Wendle out again Wednesday, rookie Charles Leblanc is starting at the keystone and hitting third against Cubs right-hander Marcus Stroman. Leblanc has swung the bat well in his first 38 major-league games, going 37-for-127 (.291) with four home runs, 10 RBI, 13 runs scored and four stolen bases.

Thu Sep 15 202216:08Joey Wendle Retreats To The Bench
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (core) is not in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Philadelphia Phillies in the series finale. Wendle is dealing with a minor right core issue and is expected to return to the lineup at some point this weekend. He last played on Monday. With Wendle still sideline, rookie Jordan Groshans is making his third start at the keystone on Thursday and will hit eighth in the batting order against Phillies right-hander Noah Syndergaard. Groshans will be making only his third major-league start after recently being called up from the minors. So far, he's gone 3-for-6 with three singles. The 22-year-old has become a hit-over-power prospect, but he's worth adding in deeper leagues if he continues to play regularly to close out the 2022 season.

Sat Aug 27 202212:50Joey Wendle Drives In Three In Extra-Inning Loss
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a run scored in Friday's 10-6 extra-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It was Wendle's first run batted in in 10 games, so it was nice to see him get back on the RBI board. In 260 at-bats in his first year in Miami, Wendle is hitting a pedestrian .250/.293/.342 with only two home runs, 27 RBI, 18 runs scored and 10 stolen bases in 280 plate appearances and 76 games played. The 32-year-old hasn't done much in August either, going 14-for-78 (.180) with no home runs, six RBI, three runs scored and 15 strikeouts in 22 games. Hopefully his solid day on Friday will get him going as we head into the final month of the season.

Wed Aug 24 202215:07Joey Wendle Isn't Starting On Wednesday
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle isn't in the team's lineup for a Wednesday matchup with the Oakland Athletics and left-hander Cole Irvin. The 32-year-old is batting .248 with a .289 on-base percentage, two home runs, and a pair of stolen bases in 273 plate appearances in his first season with the Marlins. Jon Berti will step in at third base and hit leadoff while Charles Leblanc is starting at second base and batting seventh. Leblanc could be worth a look as a streaming option for fantasy managers in deeper leagues. The 26-year-old is hitting .322 with a .344 on-base percentage, two home runs, and three stolen bases in 61 plate appearances with the Marlins this year.

Sat Aug 13 202211:46Joey Wendle Not Starting On Saturday
Miami Marlins infielder Joey Wendle (rest) is not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Atlanta Braves. Fantasy managers should expect Wendle's playing time to take a hit with Jon Berti returning from the injured list. The Marlins will move Wendle back to his utility role, which will likely cut down on his playing time. Berti will bat leadoff and play second base against left-hander Kyle Muller on Saturday. Possibly, Wendle is back in the lineup for the nightcap during Saturday's doubleheader.

Fri Jul 1 202216:26Joey Wendle Reinstated From Injured List
The Miami Marlins reinstated third baseman Joey Wendle (hamstring) from the injured list on Friday and placed outfielder Jorge Soler (pelvis) on the 10-day injured list with bilateral pelvis inflammation in a corresponding move. The Marlins also designated infielder Erik Gonzalez for assignment and selected outfielder Billy Hamilton's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville. Wendle is starting at second base and batting second on Friday against Washington Nationals right-hander Josiah Gray. The 32-year-old missed all of June and will return to a strong .284/.340/.420 line with two homers, 11 RBI, 12 runs scored and four stolen bases. Between second and third base, Wendle should be a lineup regular for the Fish and can help with batting average and some modest speed.
