Wed Mar 2713:08Marlins Acquire Burch Smith From Rays
The Miami Marlins acquired right-hander Burch Smith from the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. Smith had an assignment clause in his minor-league contract, and the Rays didn't have a spot for him on their major-league roster out of spring training. The Marlins selected Smith's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville after the trade. The 33-year-old last pitched in the majors in 2021 with the Oakland Athletics, posting a 5.40 ERA (4.21 FIP) and 1.38 WHIP with 11 walks and 28 strikeouts in 43 1/3 relief innings. He'll be completely off the fantasy radar in what's expected to be a long-relief role for the Fish. In five big-league seasons, Smith has a poor 6.03 ERA, a 1.56 WHIP, one save, 87 walks and 184 strikeouts in 191 innings pitched.

NEW YORK (AP) — Jacob deGrom was pulled from a second straight start with an arm injury, this time leaving after three perfect innings with right shoulder soreness, but the New York Mets bullpen stepped up to finish a three-hitter in a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Tue Dec 1 202019:57Pinder ($2,275,000), Smith ($705,000) reach deals with A's
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Utilityman Chad Pinder reached a $2,275,000, one-year contract with the Oakland Athletics a day before Wednesday's deadline for teams to offer deals to unsigned players on their rosters. In addition, right-hander Burch Smith agreed to a $705,000, one-year deal. Pinder returned from a hamstring injury to help Oakland in the playoffs. The 28-year-old infielder and outfielder was part of Oakland’s wild-card game losses in 2018 and ’19. A strained right hamstring kept him on the injured list for two weeks before he came back Sept. 27 to play the final day of the regular season. He batted .232 with two homers and eight RBIs. Smith went 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA and a save in six outings spanning 12 innings for Oakland but was lost for the season in mid-August because of a strained forearm on his pitching side. The A's missed his presence in the bullpen as they won the AL West and the wild-card round against the Chicago White Sox before losing to the rival Astros in the AL Division Series. Also Tuesday, catcher Francisco Peña received a minor league contract. He would earn $600,000 while in the majors if added to the 40-man roster. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Sat Jul 25 202002:44Olson's grand slam in 10th sends Athletics past Angels 7-3
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — In the first major league game with the new, unpopular extra-inning rule, automatic runner Marcus Semien began the bottom of the 10th on second base and scored on Matt Olson’s grand slam, sending the Oakland Athletics over the Los Angeles Angels 7-3 Friday night.Olson, whose alert throw from first base nailed Angels free runner Shohei Ohtani in the top of the 10th, connected with one out. Major League Baseball instituted the controversial extra-inning runner rule for this season to keep games from dragging on amid a compressed, 60-game schedule that started late because of the virus outbreak. After Semien took second, the A’s loaded the bases against Hansel Robles (0-1) on a hit by pitch, wild pitch and a walk.New Angels manager Joe Maddon brought in reliever Hoby Milner and, with a five-man infield in place, Olson hit the first pitch far over the right-field wall.According to STATS, Olson became the third player to hit a walkoff grand slam on opening day. MESA, Ariz. (AP) — The first baseball trade in almost 30 years between two teams separated only by a bay and a bridge happened Saturday, when the San Francisco Giants and Oakland Athletics completed a deal.In a move to add experience to their bullpen, the A’s got right-hander Burch Smith from the Giants for cash. The last time Oakland and San Francisco made a trade was on Dec. 4, 1990, when the Athletics acquired outfielder Ernest Riles from the Giants for outfielder Darren Lewis and minor league pitcher Pedro Pena.“So that broke the string, huh?” Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi worked for the A's as their assistant general manager from 2011-14. Zaidi and Oakland general manager David Forst and executive Billy Beane figured they'd talk about deals at some point.“Anytime they feel like they make an upgrade, even if it’s incremental, you do it," Melvin said.Smith was designated for assignment by the Giants last week.
