Fri Jun 25 202117:17AP source: Mavs hire title-winning guard Jason Kidd as coach
DALLAS (AP) — Jason Kidd is coming back to Dallas again, this time to replace the coach he won a championship with as the point guard of the Mavericks 10 years ago. Kidd and the Mavericks agreed on a contract Friday, eight days after Rick Carlisle resigned abruptly in the wake of general manager Donnie Nelson’s departure, a person with direct knowledge of the agreement said. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the deal hasn't been announced. Carlisle, who took the Indiana job Thursday, gave ESPN an unsolicited endorsement of Kidd for his old job because of the impact Carlisle thought Kidd could have on Luka Doncic, the sensational young point guard who carries the hopes of the Mavericks. Dallas also found Nelson’s replacement in Nike executive Nico Harrison, who will carry the titles of GM and president of basketball operations, the person told AP. It is the third head coaching stop for the 48-year-old Kidd, who took Brooklyn to the second round in... [More]
Fri Jun 18 202116:56Mavericks figure to keep focus on Doncic amid sudden shakeup
DALLAS (AP) — Mark Cuban is suddenly without a coach and general manager after the Dallas Mavericks were one of the models of stability in the NBA for more than a decade. The owner's next moves figure to be all about superstar Luka Doncic following coach Rick Carlisle's decision to quit a day after the club announced the departure of longtime GM Donnie Nelson. The loss of Nelson was of more consequence for Doncic, who was a teenager playing professionally in Spain when Nelson started courting his latest European prodigy. Doncic was drafted 20 years after Germany's Dirk Nowitzki, who led the Mavericks to their only championship in 2011. “It was kind of tough on me,” Doncic told reporters in Slovenia, where he's preparing to help his home country try to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics. “I really like Donnie. It was tough on me, seeing that, but I'm not the one making decisions there.” Sure enough, Cuban's first move appeared to be with Doncic in mind. The Mavericks added Nowitzki as an adviser... [More]
Wed Sep 2 202003:08Players try to stay busy, ready sitting on the bubble bench
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Tyson Chandler figured sitting on the bench was better than sitting on the couch. He waited almost until the last minute before deciding he would join his Houston Rockets teammates for the restart. He was bored at home and wasn't going to feel any better if his team won a championship and he was watching it on TV.Then he came to Disney and got so sick he thought he had contracted the coronavirus he had spent all spring at home to avoid.“The first 48 hours, I was going like, ‘What the ... did you do?’” Chandler said. “I was like, ‘Come on, man.’”His health got better and eventually so did the experience. He's glad he came. But for players like Chandler, guys at the end of the bench, being inside the bubble is challenging on several levels. While stars like James Harden and LeBron James deal with the same mental fatigue being at Disney presents, they know when the game starts and the lights come on what time it is. Chandler has no idea if his number will even be... [More]

Wed Dec 11 201922:05Harden scores 55, Rockets withstand scare from Cavaliers
CLEVELAND (AP) — James Harden scored 55 points — 20 in the fourth quarter — and Russell Westbrook added 23 points as the Houston Rockets withstood an unexpected scare from Cleveland and held on for a 116-110 win Wednesday night over the free-falling Cavaliers, who have lost eight straight and 14 of 15.Harden matched Kyrie Irving's arena record for points in a game, and his fourth with 50 or more this season bailed out the Rockets, who allowed the Cavs to score 24 straight points in the second half. Cleveland was still up 108-107 when Harden, who came in leading the NBA in scoring at 38 points per game, dropped a floater in the lane. After a turnover by Cavs guard Jordan Clarkson, P.J. Tucker hit a 3-pointer from the corner and Clint Capela had a dunk following another Cleveland miscue. The inexperienced Cavs crumbled in the final minute, making three turnovers.Capela added 13 rebounds for Houston, which figured to have an easy time with the Cavs, who are struggling under first-year coach... Wed Oct 16 201903:21Column: Clumsy words tarnish the LeBron brand
LeBron James had time, and plenty of it, to figure out how best to answer the questions he knew were coming. Long days in hotel rooms in China and a long flight home gave him every chance to carefully craft a response to a controversy he had no part in making but one that directly affects his bank account.Instead James chose to wing it. He blamed the messenger instead of addressing the message. And the LeBron brand may never be the same. He's still one of the greatest basketball players ever, that hasn't changed. But in the space of just a few sentences Monday night James may have abdicated his spot as someone who should be listened carefully to when it comes to social issues. No one was asking James to come out in support of protesters in Hong Kong. That was always a bridge too far for a player who makes millions in the lucrative Chinese market. But a player who has always prided himself on speaking out on issues ranging from Trayvon Martin to Colin Kaepernick should have made sure in this... Fri Sep 27 201919:22Harden set to pair with Westbrook and chase title in Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — James Harden isn't listening to anyone who is worried about how things will work in Houston with the addition of Russell Westbrook. The Beard is convinced things will be great and believes the move is not only good for the Rockets as they chase their first title since 1995, but that it also is a positive change for Westbrook after being the face of the Oklahoma City Thunder for more than a decade."He just comes to entirely different chapter in his life to go out there and just play and doesn't have to go out there and worry about the pressure of carrying an entire organization," Harden said. "I'm excited for him."Questions about how these two ball-dominate guards will coexist in Houston have swirled since the Rockets shipped Chris Paul to Oklahoma City this summer in exchange for Westbrook. Only time will tell if the pairing of these two MVPs will be the push this team needs to finally win another championship.Until then everyone in the organization insists that it will work... [More]

Wed Apr 10 201919:21Analysis: Lakers have opportunity to open new chapter
EL SEGUNDO, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Lakers already had plenty of problems to fix during the summer after their sixth straight losing season.Replacing the person in charge of fixing those problems is suddenly at the top of the list.Magic Johnson's shocking resignation as the 16-time NBA champions' president of basketball operations Tuesday night compounded the turmoil that always seems to envelop the Lakers, who remain among the most talked-about sports franchises in the world even though they haven't made the playoffs since 2013.Owner Jeanie Buss unveiled no immediate plan Wednesday for the basketball leadership of the Lakers — perhaps understandably, since she had no idea she needed a plan 18 hours earlier.Buss, general manager Rob Pelinka and coach Luke Walton all skipped the Lakers' customary exit interviews on the morning after their season ended, instead leaving it to their players to characterize yet another bizarre year in Lakerland."I still have confidence that this organization... Sat Feb 2 201920:02LeBron James sitting out for Lakers against Warriors
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — LeBron James was ruled out for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Golden State Warriors, two days after he returned from a 17-game absence with a strained left groin he hurt at Oracle Arena on Christmas night.Coach Luke Walton made the announcement about James' "load management" some 80 minutes before Saturday night's tipoff, saying James woke up Friday "pretty sore" after playing 40 minutes in a 123-120 overtime victory over the Clippers on Thursday night in his return.James had 24 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists in that game, when the Lakers had hoped to keep James to 32-35 minutes but needed him in overtime."There was no taking him out at that point," Walton said. "Who knows how sore he would have been if wasn't overtime but I'm sure he still would have been sore. He hadn't played that type of basketball in five weeks. He does a lot when he's out on the court."Walton said by resting James it gives the 34-year-old four-time MVP a few more days to recover before... [More]
Tue Nov 6 201819:02LA Lakers sign C Tyson Chandler after buyout from Suns
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Veteran center Tyson Chandler signed with the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday, two days after reaching a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Suns.Chandler will provide needed frontcourt depth for the Lakers, who have relied on JaVale McGee and undersized forwards to guard big men during their 4-6 start to the season. Rookie center Moe Wagner still hasn't made his debut while returning slowly from a knee injury, and Lakers basketball boss Magic Johnson didn't want to wait any longer to bolster his team's areas of need. While the 36-year-old Chandler might not be the dominant defensive player he was in his prime, he could play regular minutes for coach Luke Walton while the Lakers attempt to find a winning groove in their first season with LeBron James. The Lakers host Minnesota on Wednesday night."Having observed our roster for the first 10 games of this young season, one of the areas that Earvin and I discussed with Luke that we desired to upgrade is interior defense and rebounding,"... Mon Nov 5 201802:43Threeforall: Bucks become latest team to set a 3-point mark
The best 3-point shooter who ever lived, at least in terms of volume, is Ray Allen.Boston used to have him.Milwaukee used to have him.And he doesn't figure into either franchise's greatest single-game 3-point barrage. With NBA records being set from 3-point range this season — Golden State's Klay Thompson has already busted the mark for 3s in a game with 14, one more than the standard his fellow Warriors sharpshooter Stephen Curry established in 2016, the league is well on its way to making more shots from beyond the arc than ever before. The record, set last season, is 25,807. The NBA is on pace this season to make about 27,300 shots from 3-point land. Now, not even three full weeks into this season, five teams have broken their own franchise record for 3s in a game. The most recent entry into that club was Milwaukee, which connected on 22 3s — on 56 tries, as opposed to 39 from inside the arc — in its 144-109 win over Sacramento on Sunday. The Bucks used 13 players, with everyone trying... [More]

Tue Mar 6 201817:01On Basketball: It's time to change the NBA draft rules
The NBA says it is seeking an answer to the one-and-done issue, and that doesn't make a whole lot of sense. It already has an answer.NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has acknowledged for years that the current plan — where players have to be 19 years old and a year out of high school before reaching the league — doesn't work. The NBA has talked about raising the minimum age to 20. The players have talked about lowering the minimum age to 18.So the solution is obvious. Do both.If a player is ready at 18, let him join the NBA.If he wants to go to college first, make him stay there at least two years.Everybody wins."Some kids think they're ready when they're really not, but still have aspirations to play professional basketball your whole life," said Phoenix star guard Devin Booker, a one-and-done collegian at Kentucky who doesn't seem too far away from joining the ranks of the NBA elite. "And I don't think you should be forced to go to college."Thing is, that's exactly what is happening. Most likely... [More]
