Mon Apr 802:08Shawn Armstrong Picks Up Save, Pete Fairbanks Not Used
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong notched his first save of the season Sunday in a 3-2 win over the Colorado Rockies. This save was of the two-inning variety, as Armstrong threw the eighth and ninth. He allowed an inherited runner to score in the eighth and one of his own in the ninth to make things interesting but escaped with the save. Of note in this one is that presumed closer Pete Fairbanks wasn't used for the second day in a row in a save situation. He gave up three runs and took the loss on Friday while struggling with control and then wasn't used either of the past two days, so this is a situation worth monitoring. Fairbanks should still be rostered in all leagues where saves count, and Armstrong isn't worth rostering in most leagues. Jason Adam, however, could be a nice handcuff to have for Fairbanks owners.

Tue Aug 23 202200:43Shawn Armstrong Earns First Save Of Season Monday
Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong picked up his first save of the season in Monday's 2-1 win over the Angels. Armstrong came in to pitch the ninth inning up by one and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. This was the 31-year-old's first save opportunity this season in 42 inning pitched, over which he has an uninspiring 4.71 ERA. The Rays are notorious for mixing up their bullpen usage at the end of games, and this has been fully on display lately with five different players seeing save opportunities in the last seven days. Pete Fairbanks has seen the most in that time at two, so he may be worth the latest dart throw if fantasy managers are truly desperate for saves.

Mon Mar 7 202216:41Shawn Armstrong Was In High Demand Before Lockout
Free-agent right-hander Shawn Armstrong was receiving interest from more than 20 teams before the lockout began in early December. Armstrong, 31, posted a 6.75 ERA and 1.50 WHIP with 44 strikeouts and 15 walks in 36 relief innings for the Baltimore Orioles and Tampa Bay Rays in 2021. The Rays were willing to re-sign him immediately to a minor league deal or split-salary deal. Armstrong has been out of minor league options since 2019 and has seven years of major league experience with the Cleveland Guardians, Seattle Mariners, Orioles and Rays. He has been working out at a facility near his North Carolina home with a group of players, but he's not allowed to talk to teams or take part in workouts in front of scouts.

Fri Jul 30 202114:24Orioles send reliever Shawn Armstrong to Rays for cash
BALTIMORE (AP) — The Baltimore Orioles traded right-hander Shawn Armstrong to the Tampa Bay Rays for cash on Friday. The right-handed reliever has spent parts of seven seasons in the majors. Armstrong has an 8.55 ERA in 20 appearances with the Orioles this season and was with Triple-A Norfolk at the time of the deal. The Rays have been both buyers and sellers ahead of Friday's trade deadline, acquiring slugger Nelson Cruz from the Minnesota Twins and shipping right-hander Diego Castillo to the Seattle Mariners for reliever JT Chargois and a minor league infielder. Tampa Bay entered Friday trailing first-place Boston by 1 1/2 games in the AL East and leading the AL wild-card race. Baltimore, which is last in the AL East, made another move Friday, claiming left-hander Ryan Hartman off waivers from the Astros. Hartman had been designed for assignment by Houston on Sunday. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/mlb and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

Fri Jul 30 202111:28Rays Acquire Shawn Armstrong From Orioles
Baltimore Orioles relief pitcher Shawn Armstrong has been dealt to the Tampa Bay Rays. In exchange for Armstrong, the Orioles will receive cash considerations. Armstrong has an 8.55 ERA over 20 appearances for the Orioles this season. He was removed from the 40-man roster last month, but has pitched well in the minors. Armstrong could be a nice depth piece for the Rays as they make a playoff push. He won't hold any fantasy value and will likely head to Triple-A.

Wed May 12 202117:36Dark Knight returns: Harvey, Orioles lose to Mets 7-1
NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey walked onto the Citi Field mound for the first time in 3 years, 9 days, his brown eyes darting around the stadium where he became a star and left in ignominy. “There’s been so many ups and downs here at this ballpark and with this organization that I didn’t really know what to expect,” he said later. “What the fans gave me out there was pretty incredible. I was holding back tears.” Harvey received three standing ovations, but his outing for Baltimore was no better than his final performances for New York. Pitching against against the Mets for the first time, Harvey allowed Kevin Pillar’s two-run triple in a three-run second inning that carried New York over the Orioles 7-1 on Wednesday for a seven-game winning streak. Wearing orange and black instead of blue and orange, Harvey (3-3) gave up a season-high seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings with one walk and four strikeouts. His ERA rose from 3.60 to 4.81 as the last-place Orioles lost for the fifth time... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Matt Harvey was greeted warmly by Mets fans in his return to Citi Field and harshly by New York’s hitters. Harvey pitched against his former team for the first time and allowed Kevin Pillar’s two-run triple in a three-run second inning that carried the Mets to their seventh straight win, 7-1 over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Wearing orange and black instead of blue and orange, Harvey (3-3) gave up a season-high seven runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, and his ERA rose from 3.60 to 4.81 as the last-place Orioles lost for the fifth time in six games. Taijuan Walker (3-1) lowered his ERA to 2.20, allowing one run and four hits over seven innings as part of a five-hitter. Dominic Smith had three hits and two RBIs for the NL East-leading Mets, who completed a two-game sweep that finished a 5-0 homestand. Tue May 4 202102:33Wainwright comes off IL, helps Cards beat Mets 6-5
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Adam Wainwright came off the COVID-19 injured list and hung tough, St. Louis got a lights-out performance from its bullpen and the Cardinals beat New York for their fifth straight win. After the game, the Mets fired hitting coach Chili Davis and assistant hitting coach Tom Slater. New York has struggled badly with runners in scoring position this season, a trouble spot last year as well when Davis worked remotely because of coronavirus concerns. Several accomplished hitters are off to slow starts for the Mets, including $341 million newcomer Francisco Lindor. The Cardinals were clinging to a one-run lead in the ninth with two outs and a runner on base when the lights at Busch Stadium flickered, then went out for a moment. When play resumed, reliever Alex Reyes walked Pete Alonso before retiring Dom Smith on a flyball for the final out. Nolan Arenado and Harrison Bader homered to back Wainwright’s first win of the season. Four Cardinals relievers combined for 3 1/3 hitless... [More]
