Fri Mar 1520:42Jose Abreu Could Play Sunday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (knee) is scheduled to do a full workout in camp on Friday and Saturday, with the goal of serving as the designated hitter in a Grapefruit League game on Sunday versus the Philadelphia Phillies. Abreu has been dealing with some minor knee soreness in camp in the last week, but the 37-year-old is fine and should return to game action soon. Given his age, Abreu is expected to see more of his at-bats at DH for the Astros in 2024 in order to keep him off his feet as much as possible. After a dreadful start to the season for Houston in the first half of last season, the Cuban slugger rebounded to hit .237/.296/.383 with 18 home runs and 90 RBI in 540 regular-season at-bats. Abreu isn't the hitter he once was with the Chicago White Sox, but he can deliver moderate power as a corner infield option in mixed fantasy leagues with plenty of RBI chances.

Tue Mar 1212:52Jose Abreu Could Return To Game Action Soon
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (knee) is scheduled to hit and take groundballs in camp on Tuesday and could return to Grapefruit League games by Wednesday or Thursday, according to manager Joe Espada. The Astros have held Abreu out of games the last couple of days while he deals with right-knee soreness. It's nothing serious, though, and the 37-year-old right-handed slugger should be just fine for Opening Day on March 28. So far in spring training games, he's gone 4-for-14 in six contests for the Astros. Abreu came on strong in the second half last year after a really bad start in his first year in Houston. He's no longer in his prime, though, so fantasy managers might not be able to expect much from Abreu other than solid RBI numbers while hitting in the heart of a strong Astros lineup.

Sat Mar 916:07Jose Abreu Day-To-Day With Knee Soreness
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (knee) is dealing with right knee soreness from his sliding attempt on a foul ball during Thursday's spring training win over the St. Louis Cardinals in Jupiter. Manager Joe Espada said Abreu will rest for a few days but that there are "no concerns." This issue sounds to be minor, so Abreu should be back in Houston's lineup in short order. The 37-year-old 2020 American League MVP looked to be a shell of himself during most of the first season of a three-year deal with the Astros, but in his final 26 games of the campaign, Abreu managed to hit .237 with an .835 OPS, seven home runs, six doubles, and 28 RBI over his closing 97 at-bats. After also batting .295 with a .945 OPS in 44 postseason ABs, the late-season surge gives the veteran slugger some late-round life in 2024 fantasy drafts.

Thu Mar 714:39Jose Abreu Logs RBI Double Thursday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu logged an RBI double and scored a run as part of his two plate appearances in Thursday's Grapefruit League contest versus the St. Louis Cardinals. The veteran is now hitting .286 (4-for-14) with a pair of doubles, three strikeouts, and zero walks across six games and 15 trips to the plate so far this spring. The 2020 AL MVP struggled in his first season with Houston in 2023, hitting .237 with 18 home runs and a .679 OPS across 141 games played. The Astros plan to either give Abreu more days off in the 2024 season or have him spend more time at designated hitter, or perhaps both. That said, he could provide some late-round pop with another 18 home runs projected by ATC in the 2024 season but he is no longer a premier option at first base.

Tue Feb 1323:16Jose Abreu Could See More Days Off
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu could be rested more often in 2024. At the very least, Abreu should see more at-bats as the team's designated hitter to keep him fresh. The 37-year-old Cuban veteran was a disappointment in 2023 in his first year in Houston, hitting a career-worst .237 (128-for-540) with a career-low 18 home runs, 23 doubles, a triple, 90 RBI and 62 runs scored in 594 plate appearances over 141 games played. A lot of his struggles could be attributed to a back injury that he played with for much of the year. The good news is that Abreu had a .776 OPS with 14 home runs and 57 RBI in his final 63 regular season games, which he carried into the postseason. Abreu will most likely continue his decline in 2024, but at least he resides in one of the strongest lineups in baseball.

Wed Aug 23 202316:21Jose Abreu Reinstated From Injured List
The Houston Astros reinstated first baseman Jose Abreu (back) from the 10-day injured list on Wednesday and optioned infielder David Hensley to Triple-A Sugar Land in a corresponding move. Abreu is immediately back in the starting lineup on Wednesday against Boston Red Sox left-hander Chris Sale, playing first base and batting sixth in the order. Fantasy managers may want to keep Abreu on their benches, as he had gone 3-for-35 at the plate before getting hurt. In 10 career at-bats against Sale, Abreu is hitting just .200 with three RBI. The 36-year-old veteran has had a down year in his first season in Houston, slashing .234/.291/.343 with only 10 homers, 56 RBI and 43 runs scored in 423 at-bats.

Tue Aug 22 202319:02Jose Abreu Hopeful To Return On Thursday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) is hopeful to return from the injured list on Thursday, according to manager Dusty Baker. It was being reported that Abreu hasn't resumed swinging a bat as of Friday. That being said, it'd be a bit surprising that Abreu would be activated this quickly. Possibly, the 36-year-old started making good progress over the weekend. Fantasy managers will have to check back on Thursday for more information.

Fri Aug 18 202317:33Jose Abreu Not Swinging, Won't Return Sunday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) hasn't resumed swinging a bat, and manager Dusty Baker said it's unrealistic to expect Abreu to come off the 10-day injured list when he's first eligible to return this Sunday. Abreu has been sidelined since Aug. 10 with lower-back inflammation, and it wouldn't be a big surprise if he doesn't return until September if he continues to make slow progress from the injury. The 36-year-old former MVP has had a tough first year in Houston, slashing .234/.291/.343 with only 10 home runs, 16 doubles, 56 RBI and 43 runs scored in 110 games. He's been even worse so far in the second half, going 20-for-89 (.225) with three homers, 11 RBI, 22 K's and 14 runs scored in 23 starts. Yainer Diaz is starting at first base on Friday for the 'Stros and is hitting cleanup.

Sat Aug 12 202316:26Jose Abreu Placed On 10-Day Injured List
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) has been placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday. The 36-year-old missed two straight games due to lower back discomfort. After that, Abreu underwent an MRI which revealed inflammation in his back. The veteran slugger received a pair of cortisone shots on Friday. The Astros are going to give Abreu some time to rest and recover. The expectation is that Jon Singleton will get a chance to play more in the absence of Abreu.

Sat Aug 12 202300:38Jose Abreu Undergoes MRI On Friday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back), who has missed two straight games with lower-back discomfort, underwent an MRI and was examined by team doctors on Friday. Astros skipper Dusty Baker hopes at this time that Abreu won't require a stint on the injured list. Abreu has sputtered at the plate virtually all year after bagging a three-year, $58.5 million with the Astros this past offseason. The former AL MVP is slashing a weak .234/.291/.343 with 10 home runs, 16 doubles, and 56 RBI through 423 at-bats this year. Abreu's next chance to return to the lineup will come on Saturday versus the Los Angeles Angels.

Fri Aug 11 202318:37Jose Abreu Remains Out On Friday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) remains out of the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. The veteran slugger missed Thursday's game due to lower back discomfort. It appears this issue is still bothering him, so he'll miss at least one more game. This seems like a day-to-day type of issue, but Abreu could be placed on the injured list, assuming the injury lingers. In the meantime, Jon Singleton will cover first base and bat seventh versus left-hander Reid Detmers on Friday.

Thu Aug 10 202312:05Jose Abreu Dealing With Back Discomfort
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu (back) isn't in the starting lineup on Thursday against the Baltimore Orioles because he's dealing with lower-back discomfort, according to manager Dusty Baker. Abreu will be evaluated when the team returns home this weekend. With Abreu out on Thursday, Jon Singleton is starting at first base and batting sixth against Orioles right-hander Dean Kremer. Abreu has been a pretty big disappointment in 2023 in his first year in Houston. The three-time All-Star and former MVP in 2020 is slashing a lowly .234/.291/.343 with 10 home runs, 16 doubles, 56 RBI and 43 runs scored in 464 trips to the plate and 110 games. The 36-year-old has looked his age and has just three hits and 11 strikeouts in 39 plate appearances in nine starts since July 30.

Sun Jun 11 202310:28Jose Abreu Shows Signs Of Life With Another Home Run
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu drilled a high fastball for his second homer in as many days on Saturday against the Cleveland Guardians. The 36-year-old went 2-for-5 overall with three RBI and his third straight two-hit effort during the 6-4 win. Abreu is finally peeking out from the doldrums which saw him slug a pathetic .260 over his first 54 games with Houston. The former AL MVP is showing more of a pulse in nine June outings, hitting safely in eight games for a more customary .289 AVG with a .774 OPS and two homers plus nine RBI this month. Abreu has quite a way to go to regain the trust of fantasy managers, but it wouldn't hurt to scoop him up off waiver wires where he was discarded to see if he can fully return to form.

Sun May 7 202314:35Jose Abreu Scuffling, Still Batting Cleanup Sunday
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu struck out twice (0-for-2) with two walks Saturday against the Mariners. The 36-year-old remains in the advantageous fourth spot in the Astros batting order Sunday for their series finale. Time has to be running thin before Houston considers dropping him in the lineup; Abreu still doesn't have a single home run with the club and his slugging percentage (.254) is shockingly lower than his on-base percentage (.273). The former AL MVP is hitting a lousy 19-for-101 (.188 average) over the last month of play now. Abreu remains a hold in mixed fantasy leagues for his stacked career resume, but you'd be hard-pressed to make a buy-low case for this version of him right now amidst this power outage.

Thu Apr 20 202306:27Jose Abreu Searching For First Home Run In 2023
Houston Astros first baseman Jose Abreu has yet to homer in 2023. He hit 15 homers in 2022, a massive drop from the 30 long balls blasted in 2021. His hard-hit percentage has decreased from 51.8% in 2022 to 37.5% in 2023. The 36-year-old is slashing .266/.301/.304 with nine RBI and five runs scored over 83 plate appearances. He is starting to heat up at the plate and is hitting .417 (5-for-12) with a double and four RBI over his last three games. The Astros have a scheduled day off Thursday; Abreu will look to connect for his first home run against Atlanta Braves right-hander Bryce Elder in Friday's road matchup. Fantasy managers must stay patient and roll with Abreu as he continues to hit in the heart of the order in a loaded Astros lineup that includes Kyle Tucker and Yordan Alvarez.

Mon Nov 28 202214:52Astros "Finalizing A Deal For" Jose Abreu
According to a tweet from USA Today's Bob Nightengale on Monday, the Houston Astros are reportedly "finalizing a deal for" Jose Abreu. According to the Houston Chronicle's Chandler Rome, the deal is expected to be for three years and around $20 million per year. Nightengale tweeted the following on Monday morning: "The Houston #Astros are finalizing a deal for free-agent first baseman Jose Abreu." The slugger hit .304 last season in 679 plate appearances for the Chicago White Sox, adding 15 home runs and a strong .378 on-base percentage in those 679 plate appearances. He'll give the Astros yet another quality lineup option alongside the likes of Yordan Alvarez, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker, Jose Altuve, and Jeremy Pena.

Mon Nov 21 202214:50Padres Have Reportedly Spoken With Jose Abreu This Month
According to a tweet from MLB Network's Jon Morosi on Saturday, Jose Abreu has reportedly spoken with the San Diego Padres this month. Morosi tweeted: "Sources: Free agent Jose Abreu has spoken with #Padres officials this month. Abreu is a top priority for the Padres, who are seeing middle-of-the-order power and have an opening at the DH/1B spot. @MLBNetwork @MLB." The 35-year-old has previously spent his entire career with the Chicago White Sox. Wed Oct 19 202200:05Jose Abreu Not Likely To Return To White Sox In 2023
The Chicago White Sox are likely not going to pursue re-signing free agent first baseman Jose Abreu, per Chicago Sun Times' Daryl Van Schouwen. Abreu has spent his entire nine-season career with the White Sox and had another productive season, slashing .304/.378/.446 with 15 home runs and 75 RBI. However, the White Sox are likely going to give the everyday first base opportunity to 24-year-old Andrew Vaughn, who played outfield for most of this season and slashed .271/.321/.429 with 17 HR and 76 RBI. Abreu has been a higher-end fantasy option for his career, but he will be 36 entering the 2023 season and had a career-low HR count and slugging percentage. It will be interesting to see where he lands for next season, which will help determine his potential fantasy value.

Wed Oct 5 202211:23Jose Abreu, Eloy Jimenez Will Sit In Season Finale
Chicago White Sox acting manager Miguel Cairo said that first baseman Jose Abreu and outfielders Eloy Jimenez and AJ Pollock will get the season finale off on Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins. Abreu will finish his 2022 season with a strong .304/.378/.446 slash line with an .824 OPS, 15 homers, 75 RBI and 85 runs scored in 601 at-bats. Jimenez only managed to play in 84 games, but he was solid when on the field with a .295/.358/.500 slash line with an .858 OPS, 16 homers, 54 RBI and 40 runs scored. And finally, Pollock hit a pedestrian .245/.292/.389 with 14 home runs, 56 RBI, 61 runs scored and three stolen bases in 527 plate appearances over 138 games in his first year in Chicago.

Tue Sep 13 202223:06Jose Abreu Homers Tuesday
Chicago White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu reached base three times Tuesday night, going 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and two runs scored. It was Abreu's 15th home run of the season. Abreu has been a big reason for Chicago's late-season playoff push, slashing .363/.426/.434 over his past 30 games, though this is his first long ball since August 3. He's hit safely in 16 of his last 17 games and has an .843 OPS with 79 runs scored and 67 RBI for the season.
