Wed Feb 1417:55Robbie Ray Placed On 60-Day Injured List
San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list on Wednesday as he recovers from left-elbow UCL surgery. In a corresponding move, the Giants signed right-hander Austin Warren to an undisclosed one-year major-league deal. Ray underwent Tommy John surgery in May of last year after making only three starts for the Seattle Mariners and won't be able to pitch in 2024 until the second half of the season after the Giants acquired the former Cy Young winner in an offseason trade with Seattle. The 32-year-old veteran southpaw is an elite strikeout artist when healthy and took the next step in 2021 with the Blue Jays when he won the American League Cy Young by finally limiting his walks. Ray has already been cleared to throw three times a week but won't be an option for fantasy managers until the second half in 2024.

Wed Feb 1413:04Robbie Ray Cleared To Throw Three Times A Week
San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) has been cleared to throw three times a week and is on schedule in his recovery from Tommy John surgery that he had in May of last year. The 32-year-old veteran southpaw and former American League Cy Young winner in 2021 with the Toronto Blue Jays only made one start for the Seattle Mariners last year before going under the knife. As a result, he's not expected to make his debut with the Giants in 2024 until sometime after the All-Star break this summer. When he does return, it might take him a bit to get his bearings to close out his first year in San Francisco, so fantasy managers should temper expectations. In 2022 with the M's, Ray was decent, posting a 3.71 ERA with 212 K's and 67 walks in 189 innings. When healthy, he's one of the better left-handed strikeout artists.

Fri Jan 2620:56Robbie Ray To Throw From 120 Feet This Weekend
San Francisco Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) is scheduled to throw from 120 feet on Saturday as he rehabs from Tommy John surgery that he had last May. Ray is slowly progressing from his surgery and is hoping to start throwing off a mound early in spring training and eventually make his season and team debut around the All-Star break in a "best-case scenario." The Giants acquired Ray from the Seattle Mariners in a trade early in January to give the Giants more rotation depth in the second half of 2024. The 32-year-old former American League Cy Young winner in 2021 only made one start with Seattle last year before going on the shelf and having surgery. When healthy, Ray misses a lot of bats, but the long layoff could be bad news for a pitcher that showed very shaky command of his pitches before 2021.

Fri Jan 514:48Mariners Ship Robbie Ray To Giants In Friday Blockbuster
The Seattle Mariners and San Francisco Giants connected for a blockbuster trade on Friday as Seattle will send former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to the Giants in exchange for former Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger and right-hander Anthony DeSclafani. Ray, the 2021 AL Cy Young winner with the Toronto Blue Jays, went on to sign a five-year, $115 million deal with the Mariners in free agency prior to the 2022 season. While he regressed some, Ray still posted a 3.71 ERA and excellent 19.4% K-BB% across 32 starts that season. However, he was limited to just a single start in 2023 due to an elbow injury. Subsequent Tommy John surgery will sideline him until after the All-Star break. A big-time strikeout pitcher, the 32-year-old has reined in the free passes that plagued him earlier in his career as he looks to bounce back with the Giants in the 2024 campaign.

Mon Jun 12 202321:17Robbie Ray Moved To 60-Day Injured List
The Seattle Mariners shifted left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list on Monday. Ray had Tommy John surgery in May and will not be returning to the mound until the 2024 season at the earliest, making this just a procedural move to open up a spot for Ty Adcock to join Seattle's bullpen. Ray made just one start for the Mariners this season, allowing three runs across 3 1/3 innings of work while striking out three.

Tue May 23 202317:27Robbie Ray Already Rehabbing Following Tommy John Surgery
Seattle Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) is scheduled to head to the team's spring training facilities in Arizona on May 26 to begin post-surgery work, according to general manager Justin Hollander. The normal progression for recovery from Tommy John surgery is to not begin throwing until at least six months after the procedure, which was on May 3 for Ray. The southpaw hurler said on May 13 that 10 days after the surgery, his rehab process consists mostly of wrist and hand movement as well as gradually straightening his left arm. With the recovery period for Tommy John surgery typically at 12-18 months, Ray is unlikely to be ready to go by the beginning of spring training next year.

Wed May 3 202318:59Robbie Ray Has Successful Surgery
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on Wednesday. This is a disappointing end to the season for the left-hander, who was only able to make one start this season. He's expected to be sidelined until mid-season in 2024 after undergoing flexor tendon repair surgery and a full UCL reconstruction. The 31-year-old has three years left on a massive five-year deal he signed with Seattle. Fantasy managers in redraft formats can safely drop Ray.

Wed Apr 26 202317:05Robbie Ray Needs Surgery, Done For The Year
Seattle Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) will undergo surgery to fix the flexor tendon in his left arm and will miss the rest of the 2023 season. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw was put on the injured list on April 1 with a left flexor strain, and there was hope that he could return to Seattle's starting rotation in the middle of May, but those plans are scrapped now. Ray's season will come to a disappointing end after he made just one start for the M's and fantasy managers. You can safely drop him in single-year fantasy leagues now. Losing the former American League Cy Young winner this early in the year is a big blow to Seattle's rotation depth. Chris Flexen has been the beneficiary of Ray's rotation spot recently.

Wed Apr 19 202309:14Robbie Ray Set For MRI, Won't Begin Throwing Program Yet
Seattle Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray (forearm) is not ready to begin a throwing program until next week. He was shut down from throwing for at least two weeks after he suffered a Grade 1 flexor strain in the second inning of his first start in 2023. According to Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, the 31-year-old will throw next week at the earliest. Ray told reporters that the progression of his left flexor strain has been good. He will undergo an MRI later this week. Ray is still ways away from returning to the mound, and fantasy managers should continue to stash the southpaw on their rosters for now.

Thu Apr 13 202312:59Robbie Ray Hasn't Resumed Throwing
Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais said that left-hander Robbie Ray (forearm) hasn't started throwing yet, but he's feeling better and is getting through upper-body workouts. the 2021 American League Cy Young winner was shut down from throwing for at least two weeks after he suffered a Grade 1 flexor strain in the second inning of his first start in 2023. Ray will need to build his arm strength back up once he's healed, so he'll likely need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment. "He feels really good about where he's at," Servais said. "I'm sure he'll get a ball in his hand here soon." Ray doesn't have a clear timetable for a return, and fantasy managers should expect him to miss at least a month of action.

Sun Apr 2 202312:00Robbie Ray Has Grade 1 Elbow Strain
An MRI exam on Seattle Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray (elbow) on Saturday morning revealed a Grade 1 elbow strain. He will be shut down for two weeks and then be re-evaluated to see if he can resume throwing. Ray said he felt his forearm get tight in the second inning of his first outing of the season on Friday against the Cleveland Guardians, and he has since been placed on the injured list. Fantasy managers should expect the 31-year-old southpaw to miss at least a month of action, but he should be stashed in an IL spot in most leagues. With Ray sidelined in April, Chris Flexen is the most likely candidate to take Ray's rotation spot in Seattle, making him worth a deep-mixed and AL-only pickup.

Sat Apr 1 202316:33Robbie Ray Placed On Injured List
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray (hip) has been placed on the 15-day injured list. This is bad news after Ray struggled during his season debut. The left-hander allowed five runs (three earned) with four hits and five walks allowed on Friday. As of now, the Mariners haven't announced how long Ray is going to be sidelined. In the meantime, they've recalled left-hander Gabe Speier from Triple-A. However, he's expected to pitch out of the bullpen until the Mariners figure out how to fill their void in the starting rotation. This is obviously a blow to fantasy managers who took Ray early in drafts.

Mon Feb 20 202311:33Robbie Ray Starting Cactus League Opener
Seattle Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray will start the team's Cactus League opener this Friday against the San Diego Padres. In his first year in Seattle after winning the American League Cy Young with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2021, Ray went 12-12 with a 3.71 ERA (4.16 FIP), 1.19 WHIP and 27.4 percent strikeout rate in 189 innings over 32 starts for Seattle. He definitely wasn't as effective as he was the previous year, and he'll probably be most remembered for surrendering a game-winning homer to Yordan Alvarez in relief in the postseason against the eventual World Series champion Houston Astros in the Division Series. The 31-year-old southpaw has displayed that he can limit his walks, making him a solid mid-rotation piece for the improved Mariners.

Sun Sep 4 202201:29Robbie Ray Earns 12th Win
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray helped extend the team's winning streak to six games Saturday, as he picked up his own 12th victory of the season with six innings of shutout ball. He allowed six hits and no walks and recorded three strikeouts. Ray has six consecutive quality starts, and he has allowed more than three earned runs in a game just twice since June 6. He has a 3.45 ERA and 1.13 WHIP with 183 strikeouts in 161 2/3 innings this year.

Mon Jul 25 202210:23Robbie Ray Allows Six Runs Across Three Innings
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray only lasted three innings in the 8-5 loss against the Houston Astros after giving up six runs on 10 hits, including two home runs. He also struck out just one batter but didn't allow a walk. Over 20 starts, Ray is 8-7 with a 3.90 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 27.9% strikeout rate. The left-hander isn't a Cy Young contender like last season, but he's posted respectable numbers in each category, making him a likely must-start in every format.

Tue Jun 7 202200:53Robbie Ray Allows Three Homers But Gets Win Monday
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray was not sharp despite earning the win in Monday's 7-4 game against the Astros. Ray pitched 5 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on eight hits (including three home runs) and three walks with three strikeouts. The 2021 American League Cy Young winner has not looked anywhere close to his previous season and is now 5-6 with a 4.97 ERA, 77 strikeouts, and 27 walks over 12 starts and 70 2/3 IP. Both his walks and HR have crept up and resemble some of his more unsuccessful season's marks. At this point, fantasy managers can only hope he can regain some of his form, although that may be tough in his next matchup against the Red Sox. It would not be outlandish for fantasy manager to consider sitting Ray in this matchup if they have enough pitching depth.

Thu Jun 2 202209:54Robbie Ray Tagged With His Sixth Loss On Wednesday
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray had a rough outing against the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. He pitched five innings and allowed six hits, three walks and four earned runs while striking out six. He was tagged with the loss in the game, dropping his season-long record to 4-6. Most of the damage in Wednesday's game came in the second inning, when Orioles second baseman Rougned Odor blasted a three-run homer. Ray now has a 4.93 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP on the year. He lines up for a pair of intimidating starts against the Houston Astros and Boston Red Sox next week on Monday and Sunday, respectively.

Mon May 23 202208:55Robbie Ray Carrying 5.55 ERA In May
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray has been underwhelming to say the least in the follow-up to his 2021 AL Cy Young award-winning season. Over nine starts on the year, he's gone 4-4 with a 4.77 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. We've seen his strikeout rate decrease from 32.1% last year to 25.8% this year while his walk rate has increased from 6.7% last year to 8.9% this year. Ray's been better at inducing strikeouts so far in May than he was in April. He's averaging 11.8 K/9 over four starts this month, up from 7.7 across five starts last month. However, his ERA has moved in the wrong direction as he pitched to a 4.15 ERA in April and he has a 5.55 ERA so far in May. He'll be making his final start of the month on Wednesday in a favorable matchup against the Oakland Athletics.

Fri May 13 202219:38Robbie Ray Picks Up Strikeout Pace
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Robbie Ray broke out in a big way in 2021, but he has not shown the same level of performance so far this season. Through seven starts, Ray has a 3-3 record with a 4.22 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 41 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings. That adds up to a decent enough stat line, but it's somewhat alarming that Ray is only striking out 8.65 batters per nine innings when his career rate is 11.11 K/9, and he hasn't struck out less than 11.25 batters per nine innings since 2015. In his most recent outing, Ray did whiff ten hitters, and he'll look to continue making hitters miss against the Mets on Saturday at Citi Field.
