Mon Mar 1814:56Anthony DeSclafani To Begin Season On Injured List
Minnesota Twins right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (elbow/forearm) will begin the season on the injured list. He will visit Dr. Keith Meister to evaluate the next steps on his ailing right elbow. The right-hander was shut down by the team early in the spring but has recently thrown bullpen sessions. He has yet to appear in a Cactus League game to this point, however. The veteran was acquired in a trade with the Seattle Mariners this offseason after tossing a 4.88 ERA across 19 outings (18 starts) with the Giants in the 2023 season. He was involved in a deal for Mariners left-hander Robbie Ray before being dealt to Minnesota in a trade that saw Jorge Polanco head to the Mariners.

Mon Mar 415:58Anthony DeSclafani Throws Bullpen Monday
Minnesota Twins right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) threw a bullpen session at camp on Monday as he continues to ramp up after the Twins shut him down at the starting of spring training due to right-elbow soreness. Minnesota is justified in wanting to slow the 33-year-old down in camp after DeSclafani missed time in 2023 due to a flexor strain in his right arm. However, the Twins are still hopeful that he can fill up a spot at the back of the starting rotation to begin the 2024 regular season. Fantasy managers shouldn't really be interested in DeSclafani after he went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA (4.35 FIP) and 1.25 WHIP with 20 walks and only 79 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings over 19 outings (18 starts) for the Giants last year. He already didn't miss many bats to begin with, and now he's an injury concern.

Fri Mar 113:28Anthony DeSclafani Delayed In Camp
Minnesota Twins pitchers Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) and Caleb Thielbar (hamstring) have been delayed in camp but are ramping up their throwing. Trainer Nick Paparesta said that both pitchers still have time to be ready for Opening Day. DeSclafani is dealing with right-elbow soreness, while Thielbar is dealing with a left-hamstring strain. DeSclafani, 33, was acquired in an offseason trade with the Mariners. It's a troubling sign he's hurt again after missing most of last year due to a flexor issue in his arm. In his 19 outings (18 starts) for the Giants in 2023, DeSclafani went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 79 strikeouts in 99 2/3 innings. His injury in camp could make Louie Varland the favorite for Minnesota's final rotation spot to open the year.

Wed Feb 1413:21Josh Staumont, Anthony DeSclafani Full-Go In Spring Training
New Minnesota Twins pitchers Josh Staumont (shoulder) and Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) have both been throwing for months after ending last year on the injured list and are full-go entering spring training. Staumont had thoracic outlet syndrome surgery last July but should be good to go for Opening Day with his new club. The 30-year-old could struggle to be effective after the surgery, though, especially since he hasn't very good to begin with the last two years for the Kansas City Royals (6.09 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 57 2/3 innings). DeSclafani made just 18 starts with the San Francisco Giants in 2023 due to a right flexor strain. The 33-year-old went 4-8 with a 4.88 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 79 K's in 99 2/3 innings last year. DeSclafani will be competing for the fifth spot in Minnesota's starting rotation in camp.

Mon Jan 2920:41Anthony DeSclafani, Justin Topa Traded To Twins
The Minnesota Twins acquired right-handers Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Topa, along with prospects Gabriel Gonzalez and right-hander Darren Bowen, in a four-player package from the Seattle Mariners on Monday in exchange for second baseman Jorge Polanco, according to sources. Cash is also believed to be involved in the deal. DeSclafani and outfielder Mitch Haniger were acquired by the M's from the Giants for lefty Robbie Ray earlier this offseason. The 33-year-old made only 19 starts in 2023 and may not be ready for the start of the 2024 season due to a right flexor strain. He'll provide depth for the Twins' rotation when he's ready. Topa, 32, had a 2.61 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with 61 K's in 69 innings over a career-high 75 appearances for Seattle in 2023. He should be tasked with a high-leverage role in the back of Minnesota's bullpen. Gonzalez, 20, made it to Single-A Modesto in 2023 and has some real promise at the plate as an outfielder. Bowen, 22, had a 3.88 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 59 K's in 55 2/3 innings at Modesto in his first minor-league season.

Fri Jan 514:59Anthony DeSclafani Headed To Mariners In Blockbuster Deal
Right-hander Anthony DeSclafani is headed to the Seattle Mariners in a blockbuster trade that will see former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray heading to the San Francisco Giants while outfielder Mitch Haniger joins DeSclafani in heading to Seattle, joining his former club in the process. DeSclafani has spent the past three seasons in the Bay Area but injuries limited him to just 24 starts over the last two seasons after he posted a 3.17 ERA across 31 starts in his debut season with the Giants. The righty posted a 4.88 ERA in 19 starts in the 2023 season but an elbow injury cut his season short. In parts of nine big-league seasons, the 33-year-old owns a solid 4.20 ERA between the Marlins, Reds, and Giants.

Sat Aug 5 202321:16Anthony DeSclafani Expected To Miss Rest Of Season
San Francisco Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection in his right elbow. He is expected to be shut down from throwing for six to eight weeks. DeSclafani is expected to miss the rest of the season. The 33-year-old has missed a ton of time over the last two seasons with ankle and elbow issues. DeSclafani will finish with a (4-8) record with a 4.88 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and a 79:20 K: BB across 99 2/3 innings. Unless the Giants go deep into the postseason, DeSclafani should be fully recovered ahead of Spring Training in 2024.

Tue Aug 1 202308:47Anthony DeSclafani Shut Down For "Several Weeks"
The San Francisco Giants have shut down starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani (elbow) for "several weeks," according to MLB.com. The right-hander is dealing with a Grade 1 strain in his right forearm, which he sustained in late July. Over 19 appearances (18 starts), DeSclafani owns a 4.88 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, and 18.9% strikeout rate with a 4-8 record, and already missed time this season with shoulder fatigue. The 33-year-old's value was already limited, and now with this news, fantasy owners in all formats should have no problem letting him go.

Sun Jul 16 202313:59Anthony DeSclafani Slated To Start On Tuesday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) will be activated from the injured list on Tuesday and is slated to start against his former team, the Reds, in Cincinnati. The 33-year-old hurler has been on the 15-day IL since July 3 with shoulder fatigue but all signs point to him returning to the rotation this week. DeSclafani owns a 4.28 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, and 69:18 K/BB ratio over 90 1/3 innings (16 starts) on the year. He should be avoided for streaming purposes for Tuesday's tilt at the launching pad that is GABP in Cincinnati.

Thu Jul 13 202316:27Anthony DeSclafani Beginning Minor-League Rehab Assignment
San Francisco Giants right-handers Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) and Luke Jackson (back) are both starting their minor-league rehab assignments on Thursday in the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League. As long as DeSclafani doesn't have any setbacks with his right shoulder on Thursday, he should be set to return to the team's starting rotation at some point next week after being out since early July with right-shoulder fatigue. The 33-year-old hurler will be a streaming option in deep-mixed leagues after going 4-8 with a 4.44 ERA (4.12 FIP), 1.19 WHIP, 18 walks and 72 strikeouts in 17 starts (93 1/3 innings) before his injury. Jackson, who has been out since late June with a lower-back strain, should be able to rejoin San Fran's bullpen next week as well.

San Francisco Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (shoulder) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday with fatigue in his right shoulder. DeSclafani lasted just 55 pitches in his start against the New York Mets on Sunday before getting lifted early due to the issue. The Giants activated outfielder Mike Yastrzemski (hamstring) from the IL in a corresponding move. San Francisco has yet to indicate the severity of the injury or a timetable for DeSclafani's return. Stay tuned.

Thu May 18 202315:07Anthony DeSclafani To Start Friday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani (toe) will make the start on Friday against the Miami Marlins. DeSclafani was bothered by a right-toe injury in his last start on Saturday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, when he allowed three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two in five innings in a loss. The 33-year-old right-hander won't end up missing a turn through the rotation, so fantasy managers should keep him in their starting lineups in a matchup against the Fish. In his eight starts for San Fran this year, DeSclafani has gone 3-3 with a 3.06 ERA (3.30 FIP), 0.96 WHIP, only five walks and 35 strikeouts in 50 innings pitched.

Sun May 14 202301:14Anthony DeSclafani Has A Toe Injury
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani exited Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks. There wasn't much information surrounding his premature departure at the time. However, Maria Guardado of MLB.com provided an update, indicating the right-hander got pulled because of a left toe injury. Guardado added that the injury is pre-existing and occurred several weeks ago at home after he dropped a piano bench on it. The 33-year-old has a 3-3 record in eight starts this season. He's also amassed a 3.06 ERA and 35 strikeouts in 50 innings. That said, the issue doesn't sound severe, so hopefully, he'll be back on the bump for his next scheduled start.

Sat May 13 202321:59Anthony DeSclafani Exits Saturday's Start Early
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was removed from Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks with an apparent injury. The right-hander left after attempting to field a grounder off the bat of Ketel Marte. He allowed three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out two over five innings before leaving. The 33-year-old threw 77 pitches, landing 46 for strikes. The Giants will provide an update on DeSclafani after the game; he is considered day-to-day for now. DeSclafani is tentatively scheduled to the Miami Marlins on Friday. Fantasy managers must continue monitoring the situation before inserting him into their starting lineups for Week 8.

Sat May 13 202309:53Anthony DeSclafani Aims For Rebound In Arizona
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani is lined up to face the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. The 33-year-old sports a sharp 2.80 ERA across 45 innings this year, but he surprisingly struggled during his last start against the Washington Nationals in surrendering a season-high five runs. DeSclafani and fantasy managers alike hope for a bounce-back performance versus Arizona, a team that the right-hander is 4-2 against with a splendid 2.95 ERA over 58 career innings opposing the club. DeSclafani has sacrificed two earned runs or fewer in six out of nine career starts against the D-backs. The soft-tosser doesn't miss a ton of bats (18.8% strikeout rate), but he keeps base runners at a premium with a minuscule 2.3% walk rate.

Mon Apr 10 202300:59Anthony Desclafani Tosses Gem Against Royals
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was terrific Sunday, throwing 6 innings of one-run ball against the Kansas City Royals. Unfortunately for the righty, Kris Bubic threw a gem of his own, meaning he was saddled with a no-decision. Still, Desclafani was great in this one, allowing just three hits and no walks while striking out seven. He now owns a 0.73 ERA and 0.49 WHIP over 12 IP. His injury-riddled 2022 appears to have overshadowed his brilliant 2021 for fantasy managers, but it is now time to go out and get Desclafani in leagues where he is available.

Thu Mar 2 202321:49Anthony DeSclafani To Make Spring Debut Friday
San Francisco Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) will make his Cactus League debut on Friday against the Texas Rangers. DeSclafani sustained multiple ankle injuries over the course of 2022, which culminated in a season-ending surgery to repair a tendon in his right ankle. He made just five starts and posted a 4.95 FIP with 17 strikeouts. For fantasy managers, the return of DeSclafani makes quite an impact. In 2021, the 32-year-old molded a 3.17 ERA with 152 strikeouts across 167 2/3 innings. He recorded two shutouts and posted a mediocre 18.1% strikeout rate. His stuff may not be overpowering, yet his effectiveness binds it all together. Assuming that everything goes according to plan in Desclafani's return, the Giants are expecting him to play a vital role in the rotation.

Thu Feb 16 202322:19Anthony DeSclafani Says He's 100 Percent
San Francisco Giants right-hander Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) said he is fully healthy in spring training and intends to bounce back this year after being limited to five starts in 2022 after having season-ending ankle surgery. DeSclafani had an ERA over 6.00 in his 19 innings pitched last year, too, so it was all bad. The 32-year-old should have a spot in the team's starting rotation if he makes it through spring training healthy. He had the best season of his career in 2021, posting a 3.17 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 152 strikeouts in 167 2/3 innings, though, so a bounce-back is possible if he's fully healthy this year. You can probably leave DeSclafani to the waiver wire in shallow mixed leagues to begin the season, but he could be an early waiver-wire pickup if his form looks to be closer to that of his 2021 self.

Mon Jul 11 202218:57Anthony DeSclafani To Have Ankle Surgery Tuesday
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) is set to undergo ankle surgery on Tuesday. The surgery will be performed in Green Bay and it will involve stabilizing his peroneal tendon. The projected recovery is four-to-five months, which means that DeSclafani should be ready for spring training next year if he can avoid any major setbacks. It was a rough season for the 32-year-old even before suffering the season-ending injury. He made just five starts and went 0-2 with a 9.95 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP.

Sun Jul 3 202214:43Anthony DeSclafani To Undergo Ankle Surgery
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani (ankle) will undergo surgery on his right ankle next week, according to Giants manager Gabe Kapler. The 32-year-old was placed on the 15-day injured list with right ankle inflammation this past Friday and there were rumblings that surgery could be in play for him. The Giants haven't released any information in regards to his expected timeline, but he'll likely miss a good chunk of the remainder of the season, if not all of it. It's been a rough year for the veteran, who has made just five starts, pitching to a 9.95 ERA and a 2.05 WHIP.
