Wed Jan 11 202314:56Scott Oberg Announces Retirement
Pitcher Scott Oberg is retiring, per a tweet from The Gazette's Danielle Allentuck on Wednesday. Oberg appeared in 259 games at the Major League level from 2015 through 2019, pitching to a 3.85 ERA and a 3.98 FIP. The relief pitcher's best season came in 2018 when he posted a 2.45 ERA and a 2.87 FIP in 58.2 innings of work for the Rockies.

Thu May 5 202214:55Scott Oberg Could Retire
Colorado Rockies relief pitcher Scott Oberg (elbow) has not been playing catch, and the concept of attempting a comeback at this point seems far-fetched. Four instances of a blood clot in his right forearm have derailed the right-hander's career, with the first incident coming in August of 2016 and the fourth in March of last year at spring training. A compression spot was detected in his forearm while undergoing an ultrasound exam last September, and surgery was done to clean up scar tissue and shave "down away all the area that was compressing up against the artery." "I'm not really in a rush to pick up a ball again in the near term and give it another go," Oberg said.

Sat Mar 27 202117:04Oberg on 60-day injured list after blood-clot issue in arm
The morning after throwing in a game, Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Scott Oberg showed up at the training facility in Arizona with a scary sensation that’s become all-too-familiar — numbness in his pitching arm. The blood-clot issue — the one he hoped was finally behind him — had returned. After surgery Thursday to dissolve blood clots in his right elbow, the status of Oberg for the season — possibly for his career — remains unknown. The Rockies placed Oberg on the 60-day injured list Saturday. “We’re crushed,” Rockies manager Bud Black said of the news. “This one hurts. He’s in relatively good spirits overall. From the team, we’ll support Scotty, put our arms around him when we see him.” What’s next for Oberg will be more consultations with specialists to see what else can be done as he deals with blood clots for the fourth time in his career. He was optimistic the issue was under control after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery last September. It’s a big blow to the Colorado... [More]
Fri Mar 26 202123:24Oberg undergoes surgery for blood clots in pitching elbow
Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever Scott Oberg had surgery Thursday to remove blood clots in his pitching elbow. The procedure was performed at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona. There's no timetable for his return. This marks the fourth time he's dealt with blood clots in his career. He was optimistic the issue was under control after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery last September. It's a big blow to the Colorado bullpen. Oberg pitched four innings this spring without allowing a run. Oberg, who turned 31 on March 13, was steadily working his way back to the mound after missing all of the 2020 pandemic-shortened season due to a blood clot. He hasn’t appeared in a big league games since Aug. 16, 2019, against Miami. A few days after that outing, he went on the injured list with axillary artery thrombosis (blood clot) in his right arm. When baseball returned last summer, Oberg began the abbreviated season sidelined by a back injury. Soon after, the blood-clot issue in his arm again ended his season. Oberg went through genetic testing after the first time the clot happened in 2016. That link was ruled out. Over his career, he has an 18-8 record spanning 259 games with a 3.85 ERA. Oberg, a 15th-round pick by Colorado in 2012, was the winner when the Rockies won the 2018 NL wild card game against the Chicago Cubs. He struck out all four batters he faced. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Sat Mar 13 202114:49Oberg progressing after blood clot sidelined reliever in '20
Scott Oberg’s arm was just the right amount of sore the day after his first spring training game. Even a good kind of sore, the Colorado Rockies right-handed reliever explained Saturday morning on the heels of his 17-pitch, four-batter outing against San Francisco. Most definitely the sort of sore that he views as a step in the right direction. Oberg's steadily working his way back to the mound after missing all of the 2020 pandemic-shortened season due to a blood clot — the third time over his career the issue has surfaced. Oberg underwent thoracic outlet surgery in September, which he's optimistic will alleviate the concern. “It just felt good to be back out there (Friday), to get through the whole rehab process, to go through all the obstacles that I’ve had to undergo the last couple of years,” said Oberg, who remains on track to be part of the bullpen when the Rockies begin the season by hosting the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers on April 1. “A big step for me physically... Sun Feb 21 202116:23Rockies OF Ian Desmond opts out for 2nd straight season
DENVER (AP) — Ian Desmond provided a calming voice to help the Colorado Rockies stick together soon after losing star third baseman Nolan Arenado in a blockbuster trade. That just may be the veteran outfielder's biggest contribution this season. Desmond decided Sunday to opt out for a second straight season. He announced on his Instagram account that his “desire to be with my family is greater than my desire to go back and play baseball under these circumstances." No amount of lobbying by Rockies manager Bud Black could persuade the 35-year-old Desmond, who was scheduled to make $8 million this season after walking away from a pro-rated salary of $5,555,556 last season. “This was a decision not about money,” said Black, whose team will begin full-squad workouts Tuesday in Arizona. “This was from the heart, and from the stomach. This was hard. This was agonizing for him.” Desmond did leave the door open for a possible return by adding "for now" in his post. He vowed to “continue to train... [More]
Thu Feb 18 202116:42Written off after Arenado trade, Rox look to 'shock world'
DENVER (AP) — Kyle Freeland sees the prevailing theory out there: All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado traded away, the Colorado Rockies instantly written off. That sort of narrative just provides even more incentive for the left-hander and his teammates. “We haven’t even played a spring training game ... and people are already counting us out,” Freeland said Thursday as Colorado's pitchers and catchers cranked up spring-training workouts in Scottsdale, Arizona. “It's a great opportunity for us to shock the world.” Very few are betting too heavily on Colorado after the recent blockbuster deal that sent eight-time Gold Glove winner Arenado to St. Louis. T he Baseball Prospectus’ PECOTA projections have the Rockies finishing last in the NL West with a forecasted record of 60.3-101.7. Colorado's worst record in franchise history was 64-98 in 2012 — the year before Arenado arrived in Denver. “Anytime you lose a player like Nolan, it’s going to hurt,” said Rockies reliever Scott Oberg, who’s... Wed Dec 16 202020:18Rockies manager Black downplays Arenado, Story trade rumors
DENVER (AP) — Bud Black hears the Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story trade rumors. Bud Black is entertained by the Nolan Arenado and the Trevor Story trade rumors. Just that time of year, the Colorado Rockies manager contended Wednesday in a Zoom call. “My expectation is that they’ll be with us come opening day,” Black said. Black actually thinks that trade rumors, any sort of trade rumors, are a good thing over the offseason because it keeps baseball in the conversation during this time dominated by college football, the NFL and the start of the NBA season. “It’s great for baseball to talk about players and talk about trades and talk about movement, talk about free agency," Black said. "That’s good for the game. It’s great for the game to have that out there and baseball be in the news.” Arenado is scheduled to make $35 million in 2021 as part of a $260 million, eight-year contract he signed with the Rockies in 2019. There's one caveat that could cause potential bidders to balk: The deal includes... [More]
Sun Aug 2 202013:17Rox reliever Oberg out with blood clots in arm, Davis hurt
DENVER (AP) — The Colorado Rockies may be without reliever Scott Oberg for the rest of the season after he developed blood clots in his right arm for a third time in his career.Manager Bud Black said Oberg felt some discomfort in his throwing hand Saturday during a throwing session. He was evaluated by vascular doctors, who discovered the clots. Oberg was already on the 10-day injured list with a strained back.“For lack of a better word, it’s a bummer,” Black said. “It will be a while, if at all, for Scott this season.”Oberg was diagnosed with axillary artery thrombosis (blood clots) in August 2016. He experienced the condition again last August in the middle of a splendid season. He was 6-1 with five saves and had a 2.25 ERA before going on the 60-day injured list on Aug. 19.Colorado was looking at him to possibly take over the closer’s role for a struggling Wade Davis, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right shoulder strain. Sat Jul 25 202000:24Inside Texas: Rangers open new park in 1-0 win over Rockies
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Rangers now get to play inside deep in the heart — and heat — of Texas. They're 1-0 under their new roof. Lance Lynn struck out nine over six solid innings and the Texas Rangers inaugurated their retractable-roof stadium with a 1-0 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. “Feels pretty good right now, haven’t lost a game in our new ballpark,” second-year manager Chris Woodward said. After 48 seasons of playing home games outside, it was a pleasant 72 degrees at first pitch in the air-conditioned $1.2 billion Globe Life Field — and 94 outside. The Rangers didn't get their first hit off Rockies starter German Marquez until after Lynn (1-0) had thrown the last of his 108 pitches in his first opening day start.“The first three innings of the game was probably the most uncomfortable I’ve ever felt on a mound,” Lynn said, later adding that he was just jacked up wanting to win the opener of a shortened season starting four months later. "I told everybody when... [More]

Wed Jul 22 202020:03Rockies reliever Oberg starting season on injured list
ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Colorado Rockies reliever Scott Oberg will start the season on the injured list because of back soreness. Oberg was 6-1 with a 2.25 ERA and five saves in 49 games for the Rockies last season. He got a $13 million, three-year contract last winter.“It’s a little bit of a blow. Don’t think it will be long,” manager Bud Black said Wednesday, when announcing that the Rockies would start the season without the right-hander. Oberg briefly took over as the closer last year after Wade Davis struggled in that role. But a blood clot in Oberg's right shoulder forced him to miss the final six weeks of the season and required offseason surgery. Black said Oberg had an intensive throwing session in the outfield Wednesday without any discomfort, and would throw off the mound within a few days. The Rockies open their season Friday night in Texas, where they also played exhibition games Tuesday and Wednesday. The 30-year-old Oberg had surgery over the offseason to enlarge an artery in his right shoulder, a procedure he was told will alleviate further issues. He missed the final six weeks of the 2016 season with a blood clot in the same shoulder.Oberg is 18-8 with a 3.85 ERA and seven saves in 259 career games, all with the Rockies since 2015.___ More AP baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
Tue Feb 18 202013:39Wade Davis ready to regain closer's role with Colorado
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Wade Davis has again entered spring training as the Colorado Rockies' closer after a rough 2019 season.Davis lost his ninth-inning role in the final two months last year, when he finished 1-6 with 15 saves and an 8.65 ERA in the least effective effort of an 11-year career. “It sucks when you're not doing well at anything, anything in life,” Davis said. “The biggest thing is to move past it. That's when you learn and grow. You work harder. You prepare and you are at ease with what happened and your struggles. That's why I feel good about where I'm at now, despite whatever.”Scott Oberg took over as closer and pitched well before a blood clot in his right shoulder forced him to miss the final six weeks of the season and required offseason surgery, though he is healthy this spring and will join Davis in the back end of the bullpen.“I think in a perfect world, Wade is our closer and Scotty pitches in front of him in some capacity, whether it is an inning or one-plus...
