PHOENIX (AP) — The Arizona Diamondbacks have hired Darnell Coles as hitting coach and Eric Hinske as assistant hitting coach.The team also announced Monday that Dan Butler will serve as bullpen coach and Kyle Torgerson as an assistant athletic trainer.Coles replaces Dave Magadan, who parted ways with the team after three seasons earlier this year.Coles played 19 major league seasons with eight teams, last with Colorado in 1997. He served as Milwaukee's hitting coach from 2015-18 and spent time coaching for Detroit and Washington.Hinske won a World Series with Boston and another with the New York Yankees during 12 big league seasons. Butle has been to Triple-A Syracuse.

Butler was DFA'd on Tuesday to make room for Jonathan Papelbon, and the veteran minor leaguer will head back ot Syracuse, where he holds a .231/.315/.312 slash line in 64 games this season.

Butler was designated for assignment by the Nationals on Tuesday.

A roster spot was needed with Jonathan Papelbon coming aboard from Philadelphia, and Butler was a logical choice to get the bump. The 28-year-old catcher has struggled to a .231/.315/.312 batting line in 64 games with Triple-A Syracuse this season, his sixth season at the Triple-A level.

Butler was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday.

Acquired from the Red Sox in January, Butler went just 1-for-8 with one walk in six spring games, resulting in his name being listed among the Nats' first cuts from major league camp. The 28-year-old catcher has hit .248/.329/.416 in parts of five seasons at the Triple-A level.

Butler was traded to the Nationals late Tuesday night in exchange for pitcher Danny Rosenbaum, Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports.

The Red Sox had dropped Butler from their 40-man roster last week, but the Nationals saw enough in his defensive abilities to pursue him via trade. He'll provide the organization with some catching depth at the Triple-A level.

Butler was designated for assignment by the Red Sox on Wednesday, Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe reports.

The move was made in order to clear a spot for reliever Craig Breslow, who officially re-signed on a one-year contract Wednesday. The 28-year-old Butler reached the majors for the first time last season and is strictly an organizational depth option. Expect him to go unclaimed off waivers.

Butler was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket on Tuesday.

Butler has earned a promotion pretty much by default, as he is the only other catcher besides David Ross and Christian Vazquez on the team's 40-man roster. The 27-year-old Butler hit just .241/.317/.350 with four homers in 83 games with Pawtucket and will merely serve as depth for Boston.

The move was anticipated with David Ross (heel) expected to be activated from the DL on Wednesday. Butler saw scant playing time during his stay with the Red Sox, failing to record a hit in 11 at-bats.

With David Ross (heel) set to be activated off the disabled list Monday or Tuesday, according to the Boston Globe, Butler is likely headed back to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Butler has been filling in for Ross, but wasn't getting much playing time as the Red Sox focused on getting Christian Vazquez the work.

Butler made his professional debut Sunday, going 0-for-3 in a win over the Angels.

Butler is up for the time being until David Ross (foot) is ready to be activated. He may get another start or two, but Christian Vazquez is the lead catcher right now.

Butler will get his first professional start Sunday in Anaheim, the Boston Globe reports.

Butler was called up from Triple-A Pawtucket over the weekend when David Ross (foot) was placed on the disabled list. All reports indicate Ross is on schedule to return when eligible Aug. 17, so Butler's window of opportunity should be a short one.

Butler has been called up by the Red Sox, Sean McAdam of CSN New England reports.

David Ross landed on the 15-day DL on Saturday, which could afford Butler a two-month window to work as a backup for the Red Sox. After hitting 14 homers in 282 at-bats last season at Triple-A, Butler has provided much less with the bat this time around (.227/.306/.338).

Butler was removed from Friday's game at Triple-A Pawtucket following David Ross' injury, Alex Speier of WEEI.com reports.

If Ross needs to go on the DL following his setback with plantar fasciitis, Butler appears to be the likely callup from Pawtucket to take his place on the roster. Through 75 games this season, Butler is hitting just .222/.303/.335 in the International League. He would likely be used in a limited role even if he's given the nod to join the big club.

The 26-year-old Butler, a career .259/.357/.417 hitter in the minors, was added to the 40-man roster in November. Boston signed Hinojosa, a Cuban defector, to a $4.25 million minor league contract in October. While he worked as a starter in Cuba, many scouts believe that he'll be used out of the bullpen going forward. Ely will provide cheap pitching depth when he's fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. Hill posted a 6.28 ERA with the Indians last year but struck out 51 over 38 2/3 innings; he should be one of the first relievers Boston summons for reinforcement this summer.
