Wed Jan 2411:13Trey Mancini Inks Minors Deal With Marlins
Free-agent first baseman Trey Mancini has signed a minor-league deal with the Miami Marlins that includes an invite to major-league spring training. The veteran was designated for assignment by the Cubs in early August and while he briefly latched on with the Reds, the club released him by the end of August. While the 31-year-old has largely been a productive bat throughout his career, he cratered to a .234 average alongside just four home runs and a .635 OPS across 263 plate appearances with the Cubs in 2023, production that graded out 26% below the league average, as per his 74 wRC+. Mancini owns a solid 109 wRC+ in parts of seven MLB seasons split between the Orioles, Astros, and Cubs while he will battle for reps at first base, designated hitter, and potentially the outfield with the Marlins in spring training.

Wed Aug 23 202321:26Trey Mancini Signs Minor-League Deal With Reds
The Cincinnati Reds have signed first baseman Trey Mancini to a minor-league deal. The 31-year-old veteran was recently cut by the Chicago Cubs after signing a two-year deal with the organization this past offseason. This season, Mancini is slashing .234/.299/.366 with four home runs and 28 RBI in 63 games. The expectation is that he'll likely head to Triple-A in order to get his bat back up to speed. Mancini should be able to provide some right-handed power to the Reds lineup for a postseason push. However, Mancini hasn't done enough this season to prove that a move to Cincinnati will give him reliable fantasy value.

Fri Aug 4 202308:26Trey Mancini Becomes A Free Agent
First baseman/designated hitter Trey Mancini cleared waivers on Thursday and is now a free agent, according to MLB.com. The Chicago Cubs designated the 31-year-old for assignment on August 1 after slashing .234/.299/.336 with four homers, 31 runs, and 28 RBI over 79 games. Mancini hasn't been the same since his 2019 campaign, in which he posted a .899 OPS, as he owns just a .717 mark since. The seven-year veteran is likely irrelevant in all fantasy leagues for the remainder of 2023, even if he latches onto another team.

Tue Aug 1 202316:00Cubs Moving On From Trey Mancini
The Chicago Cubs are "planning to remove" Trey Mancini from their roster, according to Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation. As of now, it's unclear whether Mancini will be traded, designated for assignment, or released. However, his time in Chicago is over. The 31-year-old is in the midst of a frustrating season, slashing .234/.299/.336 with a 29.7 K% and 74 wRC+. He has spent most of the year at first base but also logged reps as the Cubs' right fielder and designated hitter. FanGraphs' WAR metric labels Mancini as below replacement level both offensively (-10.5 oWAR) and defensively (-6.6 dWAR).

Thu Apr 27 202301:13Trey Mancini Knocks A Two-Run Homer Wednesday
Chicago Cubs first baseman Trey Mancini hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning off pitcher Michael Wacha, contributing to the team's effort despite the eventual 5-3 loss to the Padres Wednesday. The home run was Mancini's third of the season. Mancini has been on a roll in the last six games, hitting 8-for-19 with two home runs and five RBI. This streak has boosted his season batting average to .253 for the Cubs.

Tue Apr 18 202321:09Trey Mancini Getting Another Day Off Tuesday
Chicago Cubs first baseman Trey Mancini is taking a seat on the bench for Tuesday's matchup against Ken Waldichuk and the Oakland Athletics. It's his second day off over the past five games, and he's struggling at the dish with a .196 batting average and .470 OPS. Luis Torrens is taking his spot in the lineup, batting ninth at designated hitter. The 26-year-old is slashing .300/.364/.300 with no home runs in eight contests. Over his six seasons in the Majors, Torrens only has one above-average offensive season in terms of wRC+ and posted just a .581 OPS last season, so chances are there are better bat options on the wire.

Fri Mar 10 202315:56Trey Mancini Slugs Two-Run Homer Thursday
Chicago Cubs first baseman Trey Mancini hit a two-run home run on Thursday in helping the Cubs to an 8-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds. The long ball was the second of the spring for Mancini and he added a single on the afternoon as well, raising his batting average to a hefty .579 on the spring with two homers and a 1.495 OPS across 19 Cactus League at-bats. Mancini signed a two-year deal with the Cubs this winter after splitting the 2022 campaign between the Orioles and Astros, hitting .239 with 18 homers and a .710 OPS across 143 games. The soon-to-be 31-year-old is a decent source of power with at least 21 home runs in four of the last five seasons, with his 18 from 2022 representing a career low. The jet stream blowing out to left field at Wrigley Field in Chicago could help Mancini bounce back in the home run department in 2023.

Tue Feb 28 202300:15Trey Mancini, Patrick Wisdom The Main Right Field Backups
Chicago Cubs manager David Ross said Monday that Trey Mancini and Patrick Wisdom (groin) are "the first guys that come to mind" as fill-ins for right field if Seiya Suzuki (oblique) ends up having to miss time with a left oblique injury. Mancini, who was signed this off-season, has played outfield throughout his career in addition to first base. Wisdom is a primary third baseman but did see a bit of time in the outfield for the Cubs last season. It is of note that Wisdom was a late scratch from Monday's Cactus League with left groin soreness. Mancini had an uninspiring 2022 season, slashing .239/.319/.391 with 18 home runs and 63 RBI with the Orioles and the Astros. However, he does own a career .265/.330/.457 slash line, so it is possible that he could provide some fantasy value if he sees enough playing time.

Sun Jan 15 202311:38Trey Mancini Signs Two-Year Deal With Cubs
The Chicago Cubs and first baseman Trey Mancini agreed to a two-year, $14 million deal with an option year for 2025. Mancini will bank seven million a year and could earn more with escalators and incentives. The 30-year-old was hauled to the Astros in a three-team deal that included Christian Vazquez to Houston. Mancini slashed .268/.347/.404 across 401 plate appearances with the Orioles before encountering some struggles in Houston. He didn't make much of an impact for the reigning champs after amassing just a .622 OPS. Despite the signing of Eric Hosmer, it appears that Mancini was brought in to address the lefty-righty split. Mancini should get some outfield reps and can also DH when Hosmer occupies first base.

Thu Jan 12 202318:21Mets Remain In Contact With Trey Mancini
The New York Mets remain in contact with free-agent outfielder/designated hitter Trey Mancini, according to reports. It's worth noting that manager Buck Showalter was Mancini's manager for his first two major-league seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. In addition to Mancini, the Mets are considering Andrew McCutchen for the fourth outfielder role in 2023. Other options for the Mets on the open market include Adam Duvall, Jurickson Profar, David Peralta and Tyler Naquin. Mancini was pretty bad after getting dealt to the Houston Astros at the trade deadline last August, but he has 125 career home runs in six big-league seasons and could fit well as a part-time outfielder/DH for the Mets next year.

Tue Dec 20 202216:20Cubs A Possibility For Trey Mancini
The Chicago Cubs are among the possibilities for free-agent outfielder/designated hitter Trey Mancini. The Cubs would be a nice spot for the Notre Dame alumni, but other teams are interested in him as well. Mancini became a free agent when the Houston Astros declined their $10 million mutual option for the 2023 season. The 30-year-old right-handed slugger really fell off a cliff after being traded from the Baltimore Orioles to Houston on Aug. 1. He hit just .176 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in his 51 regular season games for the Astros and had one hit and eight strikeouts in 21 postseason at-bats on the way to a World Series title. Mancini wasn't an everyday player in Houston, but that probably wouldn't be the case in Chicago, offering him a chance to rebound at the plate.

Wed Nov 9 202213:23Trey Mancini, Will Smith Become Free Agents
Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Trey Mancini and relief pitcher Will Smith have become free agents after the team declined to pick up their options for the 2023 season. Mancini had a $10 million mutual option for next year, while Smith's 2023 option was worth $13 million. Mancini wasn't playing every day in Houston after they acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles at the trade deadline, and he hit just .176 with eight home runs and 22 RBI in 51 games to close out the regular season. But the 30-year-old can still provide some pop as an outfielder, DH or first baseman with another team in 2023. Smith was acquired from the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 1 and had a 3.27 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 24 K's in 22 relief innings for Houston to close out the year. The 33-year-old should latch on elsewhere, but he's unlikely to find a gig as a closer.

Sat Nov 5 202216:55Trey Mancini, Christian Vazquez Starting On Saturday
Houston Astros first baseman Trey Mancini and catcher Christian Vazquez are in the starting lineup for Game 6 of the World Series on Saturday against the Philadelphia Phillies and right-hander Zack Wheeler. Mancini is getting the nod at first and batting seventh after the Astros removed Yuli Gurriel (knee) from the World Series roster due to an injury he suffered in Game 5 on Thursday. Vazquez is serving as the designated hitter and will bat sixth in the order. Mancini has gone hitless in his first 18 playoff at-bats over seven games with an RBI, a walk and seven strikeouts. Vazquez has played in five games (two starts) this postseason and has gone 3-for-14 with two RBI, a run scored, one walk and six strikeouts.

Wed Nov 2 202219:16Martin Maldonado, Trey Mancini Sitting In Game 4
Houston Astros catcher Martin Maldonado and outfielder/designated hitter Trey Mancini will start Game 4 of the World Series on Wednesday against the Philadelphia Phillies on the bench. Christian Vazquez will do the catching and hit seventh, while Yordan Alvarez is serving as the designated hitter and batting third against Phillies right-hander Aaron Nola. Maldonado started the first three games of the World Series and went 2-for-9 with an RBI and three strikeouts at the plate. He has five hits in 23 at-bats with two RBI and two runs scored in nine playoff games this year. Mancini has only appeared in six games this postseason and is without a hit in 17 at-bats with six strikeouts. He has really struggled in Houston since being acquired from the Orioles in August.

Fri Oct 28 202218:13Trey Mancini In Astros Lineup For Game 1
Houston Astros designated hitter/outfielder Trey Mancini will be in the lineup Friday for Game 1 of the World Series. He is the team's designated hitter for the night and will bat seventh in the order. With Justin Verlander on the hill, the Astros feel safe with Yordan Alvarez in left field, which opens up a spot at DH. Mancini has played sporadically for the Astros this postseason, but did play in the final two games of the ALCS, both of which were wins. He is hitless in 12 at-bats this postseason and has drawn just one walk while striking out four times. Aledmys Diaz will start on the bench tonight with Mancini drawing in.

Sat Oct 22 202215:53Trey Mancini Serving As DH In Game 3
Houston Astros outfielder Trey Mancini is serving as the designated hitter and is batting seventh in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series on Saturday against the New York Yankees and right-hander Gerrit Cole. Mancini hasn't been a favorite of manager Dusty Baker's in the postseason, as he's played in only two games and is hitless in six at-bats with two strikeouts. This will be his first action in the ALCS after hitting just .176/.258/.364 with eight home runs, 22 RBI and 17 runs scored in 51 games after being acquired from the Orioles at the traded deadline. Mancini is just 4-for-18 in his career against the Yankees ace. With Mancini as the DH, Aledmys Diaz will start on the bench on Saturday.

Mon Aug 1 202216:57Trey Mancini Acquired By Astros
The Houston Astros acquired first baseman/outfielder Trey Mancini from the Baltimore Orioles on Monday, according to sources. It's unknown who the Orioles will get in exchange, but they are expected to receive multiple players. With Mancini now in town, the struggling Yuli Gurriel will now find himself on the bench more often. Houston's top first base target was Washington Nationals first baseman Josh Bell, so he's now unlikely to land with the Astros before Tuesday's deadline. The 30-year-old Mancini will bring the Astros an experienced hitter from the right side of the plate. In 354 at-bats with Baltimore this year, he was hitting .268/.347/.404 with 10 home runs, 41 RBI and 39 runs scored.

Fri Jul 29 202214:17Trey Mancini Homers Against Rays
Baltimore Orioles designated hitter Trey Mancini went 2-for-4 with two RBI, a run scored and a strikeout in the 3-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday. The long ball was his 10th of the season, a two-run shot, and he's had multiple hits in each of his last two games. The 30-year-old is hitting .271/.346/.411 with 10 homers, 40 RBI and 37 runs scored in 343 at-bats this season, and even though the Orioles have made a run of late, there's a chance that he could be traded before Tuesday's Aug. 2 deadline. In the month of July, Mancini has gone 20-for-82 (.244) with three home runs, 10 RBI and seven runs scored in 21 games played.

Fri Jul 1 202216:45Trey Mancini Out Against Twins
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Minnesota Twins. Mancini has now been out of Baltimore's lineup twice in the last three games after he was hit on the hand by a pitch last weekend. The 30-year-old's name has come up in trade talks recently, with the New York Mets interested in him, but as far as we know, no trade is imminent. His counting stats don't stand out, but Mancini has been solid for fantasy managers with a .280/.356/.421 slash line, seven home runs, 30 RBI and 30 runs scored in 295 plate appearances over 68 games. Ryan Mountcastle is at first base and is batting cleanup on Friday, while Anthony Santander is the designated hitter and is batting third against Twins right-hander Joe Ryan.

Tue Jun 21 202215:17Trey Mancini Back In Lineup Tuesday
Baltimore Orioles first baseman Trey Mancini (hand) is back in the starting lineup on Tuesday as the designated hitter, and he's hitting second against Washington Nationals right-hander Erick Fedde. Mancini has been out in four of the team's last six games due to right hand soreness, but he's back in there after Monday's off day. The 30-year-old has been solid on the season with a .283/.364/.416 slash line and six home runs and 25 RBI in 258 plate appearances, but Mancini is hitting just .208 (10-for-48) with three home runs and seven RBI in 13 games in the month of June. He's also struck out 14 times in 56 plate appearances. Hopefully, Mancini is finally past his hand issues.
