Fri Jun 17 202211:24White Sox Sign Dan Winkler
The Chicago White Sox have signed relief pitcher Dan Winkler to a minor league deal. The 32-year-old has been pitching in Triple-A with the Texas Rangers. This season, Winkler has posted a 3.50 ERA and 26/13 K/BB ratio over 18 innings in the minors. This is a solid landing spot for Winkler as the White Sox need bullpen help. Winkler has a 3.98 ERA in 182 games through parts of seven seasons in the big leagues. He's not expected to have fantasy value, but is a good signing for Chicago.

Tue Aug 17 202118:18Cubs DFA Dan Winkler, Call Up Michael Hermosillo
The Chicago Cubs announced on Tuesday that they have designated relief pitcher Dan Winkler for assignment. Winkler got off to a nice start to the season with a 0.51 ERA on the season entering June, but that's when the train started to fall of the tracks. Winkler had a very rough July with an 8.22 ERA and things didn't get better in August with a 29.45 ERA in six appearances. For the season, Winkler is 1-3 with a 5.22 ERA in 47 games. The veteran is likely to get picked up by another organization as a depth piece, but he should be avoided in all formats. Replacing Winkler on the active roster will be outfielder Michael Hermosillo. Hermosillo, 26, will be making his big-league debut when he steps on the field and was hitting .310 with 10 home runs, 29 RBI and seven RBI in 145 at-bats this season for the Triple-A Cubs. The Cubs are in a complete rebuild, but manager David Ross continues to stick with veteran outfielder Jason Heyward in the lineup and Hermosillo's immediate role is unknown. Managers can safely leave him on the waiver wire for now.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani hit his major league-leading 31st homer in the third, and Juan Lagares ended it with a two-run double in the ninth inning of the Los Angeles Angels’ 6-5 comeback victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday. After Los Angeles loaded the bases on a walk and two short singles, Lagares doubled to the gap in right-center, extending the Angels’ winning streak to five games. Raisel Iglesias (6-3) got the win. Ohtani tied the MLB record for the most homers in a season by a Japanese-born player when he blasted a 459-foot solo shot off Thomas Eshelman to straightaway center. It was his 14th homer in 17 games overall. Less than an hour later, Ohtani became the first player in major league history to be picked for an All-Star Game as both a hitter and... [More]

Tue May 4 202113:14Cubs place Arrieta on 10-day IL with abrasion on right thumb
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed former NL Cy Young Award winner Jake Arrieta on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday because of an abrasion on his right thumb. The Cubs also placed second baseman Nico Hoerner (strained left forearm) and reliever Dan Winkler (right triceps tendinitis) on the IL, recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan and right-handed pitcher Keegan Thompson and selected infielder Ildemaro Vargas from Triple-A Iowa. Arrieta, in his second stint with the Cubs after signing as a free agent in the offseason, lasted a season-low 3 1/3 innings in a loss Friday at Cincinnati. Manager David Ross said the Cubs decided to skip Arrieta's turn in the rotation after he threw a bullpen session on Monday. Adbert Alzolay will start in his place against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday. Hoerner was hurt in a collision in short center field with outfielder Ian Happ during Sunday's loss at Cincinnati. Hoerner kneed his teammate in the head and kicked his ribs in what he described as “probably the scariest play I've been a part of." Happ, who was taken from the field on a cart, suffered bruised ribs in the collision. Ross said he was improving though was still “super sore” and considered day to day. He added that tests showed Happ did not suffer a concussion. ___ More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/hub/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports
Fri Apr 23 202101:30Padres edge Dodgers 3-2 to open key NL West series
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Jurickson Profar singled and scored the tiebreaking run in the eighth inning, and the San Diego Padres opened the second series of the season in Southern California’s lively baseball rivalry with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday night. Trent Grisham homered and had two hits for the Padres, who snapped a three-game skid as they opened a four-game series at chilly Chavez Ravine with the Dodgers’ first home loss of the season. Los Angeles took two of three in San Diego last weekend, but the Padres answered with timely hits, strong pitching and a fantastic inning-ending double play in the eighth, capping yet another well-played matchup between two stacked rosters. AJ Pollock and Sheldon Neuse hit back-to-back homers leading off the seventh for the major league-leading Dodgers, who have lost three of four after a 13-2 start to the season. With several key hitters injured, Los Angeles has scored just 10 runs in its last five games. Profar and Victor Caratini... [More]
Tue Apr 13 202118:20Ross says no Cubs players have tested positive for COVID-19
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Chicago Cubs manager David Ross said Tuesday that none of his players have tested positive for COVID-19 as infielder Matt Duffy joined three teammates on the virus-related injured list. The Cubs already had placed relievers Brandon Workman, Jason Adam and Dan Winkler on the coronavirus-related injured list Monday. Bullpen coach Chris Young and first base coach Craig Driver have tested positive. “We still do not have any players on the positive COVID list,” Ross said before the Cubs’ game with the Milwaukee Brewers. “I would tell you right now with protocols and being extra cautious, if you have a headache, if you have a runny nose, if you have body aches, if you have just about anything going on that would or could be one of the 10 COVID symptoms, we’re going to err on the side of caution.” Ross said Driver was in the three-week waiting period between vaccination doses and that Young already had received both shots when they tested positive. “It’s two weeks after you get... A look at what’s happening around the majors today: ___ POSTPONED The Red Sox and Twins were scheduled to begin their series in Minnesota a day late. Monday's opener of a four-game set at Target Field was postponed because of safety concerns following the fatal police shooting of a Black man in Minnesota and the potential for unrest in the area. The NBA's Timberwolves and NHL's Wild also postponed their games a day after the shooting of 20-year-old Daunte Wright following a traffic stop in a nearby suburb of Minneapolis. The Twins said their decision was made in consultation with Major League Baseball and state and local officials. FINGERS CROSSED The Chicago Cubs are concerned about a possible COVID-19 outbreak after two coaches tested positive for the virus and three relievers were placed on the COVID-19-related injured list. Thu Dec 3 202013:08Cubs non-tender OFs Kyle Schwarber, Albert Almora Jr.
CHICAGO (AP) — Kyle Schwarber and Albert Almora Jr. became free agents Wednesday when the Chicago Cubs declined to offer contracts to two key players from their historic 2016 World Series championship. While Schwarber, Almora, slugger José Martínez and pitcher Ryan Tepera were non-tendered, the Cubs offered 2021 contracts to infielders Kris Bryant and Javier Báez, catchers Willson Contreras and Victor Caratini, and outfielder Ian Happ. They agreed to one-year deals with relievers Kyle Ryan ($800,000 in majors, $250,000 in minors), Colin Rea ($702,500) and Dan Winkler ($900,000), avoiding arbitration with all three. Chicago also announced it had claimed reliever Robert Stock off waivers from the Boston Red Sox. The 31-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment last week. Wednesday's non-tender deadline was the first major look at the state of the Cubs since Jed Hoyer was promoted to president of baseball operations last month, replacing Theo Epstein.
