NEW YORK (AP) — Big deals for Bryce Harper, Mike Trout and others that included large signing bonuses masked an otherwise flat market for the second straight offseason that caused Major League Baseball's opening-day payrolls to drop by $43 million for 2019.Payrolls, however, rose by $131 million when using the averages of multiyear contracts. Following a winter in which many journeymen took cuts, a string of stars signed huge long-term deals during March and April.Since the end of last season, teams agreed to a record $4.195 billion in guarantees beyond 2019, breaking the previous mark for out-year commitments of $3.414 billion set following the 2013 season, according to figures compiled by the commissioner's office and obtained by The Associated Press.Just three teams are on track to pay luxury tax. World Series champion Boston projects to owe $11.8 million, the Chicago Cubs $5.3 million and the New York Yankees just under $4 million. Figures will fluctuate during the season due to ... [More]

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell is scheduled to start against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday in his return from a fractured right fourth toe.The announcement Tuesday was made two days after Rays manager Kevin Cash said the 2018 AL Cy Young Award winner was ready to be reinstated from the 10-day injured list.Snell threw 18 pitches off a mound Saturday and an eight-pitch bullpen session Monday."It felt good and I'm ready to go," Snell said.Snell hurt the toe attempting to move a decorative display in a bathroom on April 14."I know the first couple days, it was like no shot," Snell said. "I feel good, I feel I can pitch and feel like I can run. It should be good."Snell still has some discomfort in the toe when he walks, but says he does not when throwing on a mound."With the bullpen that I threw, felt very comfortable," Snell said. "Wednesday is a day that all of us believe in, and think I'll be 100 percent."Cash is completely confident that Snell is not ... [More]

Hanley Ramírez1BIndiansFree Agent
CLEVELAND (AP) — Slugger Hanley Ramirez is again a free agent following a short stint with the Indians.Ramirez cleared waivers on Tuesday and rather than signing a minor league deal with Cleveland, the 35-year-old elected free agency. He played in 15 games for the Indians, batting .239 with two homers and eight RBIs.The Indians signed him in February to help offset the loss of power in their lineup. However, when All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor was activated from the injured list on Saturday, the club designated Ramirez for assignment.Manager Terry Francona plans to use Lindor occasionally as his DH, which made Ramirez expendable because the Indians also are keeping an extra infielder on their roster.Ramirez played in 44 games before he was released by the Boston Red Sox last season. He had his best season in 2016, hitting 30 homers with 111 RBIs. Ramirez spent three-plus seasons with Boston.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox starter Nathan Eovaldi had surgery Tuesday to remove a loose body in his right elbow. The arthroscopic procedure was performed by Yankees head team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. Boston said Eovaldi is expected to return to pitching within six weeks."I don't want to give a timetable, but I think everybody knows around what it's going to take," Boston manager Alex Cora said before Tuesday's doubleheader with the Detroit Tigers. "He should be fine when he comes back and ready to roll."A 29-year-old right-hander, Eovaldi had similar surgery on March 30 last year while with Tampa Bay and made his season debut May 30. He also has had two Tommy John operations.Acquired by the Red Sox on July 25, Eovaldi went 3-3 with a 3.33 ERA in 12 games. He became a postseason star when he pitched six-plus innings of relief and threw 97 pitches in Game 3 of the World Series, an 18-inning loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. That preserved the rest of the bullpen for the Red Sox, won beat the Dodgers in five games. The 29-year-old agreed to a $68 million, four-year contract and was 0-0 with a 6.00 ERA in four starts this season. He pitched for the Yankees in 2015 and '16.___More AP MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Joey Gallo sometimes pauses for a deep breath or glances around the ballpark between pitches looking for something to slow his racing mind. The big Texas slugger grew up trying to hit baseballs as far as he could, so the idea of relaxing in the moments before one of the most powerful swings in the majors wasn't the easiest to grasp.Yet there he was, spending two hours with a Rangers coach discussing ways to clear his head in the middle of an at-bat after his average had dipped well below a career mark barely above .200.A week later, Gallo tied his career high of five RBIs without hitting a homer and had his first-ever sacrifice fly in the big leagues. With a little help from one of his typical sky-high popups that fell for a single , the left-handed hitter's batting average was .281 entering Monday, its highest since early in Gallo's first full season in the majors two years ago."I've always been really tense in trying to crush the ball," Gallo said. Hold off — for now — on the panic in Boston. The Red Sox are indeed off to a poor start in defense of their World Series title. They have a 9-13 record and baseball's third-worst run differential. But after sweeping a three-game series with first-place Tampa Bay, Boston has avoided the worst-case scenario early on.The reigning champs trail the Rays by five games in the AL East, but the deficit could be bigger. Boston ranks near the bottom of the American League in runs scored and ERA. Aside from J.D. Martinez, none of the team's big-name hitters have been great. Chris Sale and Rick Porcello are winless, and both have ERAs over 8.00.There's still more than a week left in April, though. And there's plenty of precedent that suggests a good team can recover from a start like this. Here are a few teams since the start of the wild-card era that had even worse records than the Red Sox after 22 games — and still ended up in the postseason:— The 2015 Rangers started 7-15 and were 8 ½ ga... OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Matt Shoemaker had to choke back tears after tests revealed a torn ACL in his left knee Sunday, cutting short yet another promising season for Toronto's oft-injured right-hander.Standing in the clubhouse following a 5-4 win over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday, Shoemaker's voice quavered and he paused a few times while discussing the injury. At one point he was asked if he needed time to compose himself but declined."You can't put words to it," Shoemaker said. "Extremely frustrated but at the same time I just have to stay positive. I know I'm really upset right now, I just got the news. But stay positive, keep fighting, get this thing right and be back when it's ready to go."Shoemaker was hurt at the end of a rundown Saturday, and Toronto announced the diagnosis and placed him on the 10-day injured list a day later. He will undergo surgery but no date has been set.The 32-year-old is 3-0 with a 1.57 ERA in five starts after signing a $3.5 million, one-year deal ... [More]

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge won't be back with the New York Yankees anytime soon, a further blow to an injury-decimated team with a mediocre record 3½ weeks into the season.New York's biggest offensive threat and the heart of its clubhouse went on the injured list for the third time in four seasons Sunday, a day after straining the oblique muscle on the left side of his abdomen while hitting a sixth-inning single against Kansas City."Especially tough times like this, when a lot of guys are beat up, I wanted to be out there in the trenches with the guys every single day," Judge said after Sunday's 7-6, 10-inning win over Kansas City .Manager Aaron Boone called it a "pretty significant strain in there" and would not estimate a return date. Judge broke his right wrist when hit by a pitch by the Royals' Jakob Junis last July 26, and while Boone originally projected a return in three weeks, Judge did not rejoin the Yankees until Sept. 14."There's no need to put a time, a clock on it, bec...
