The Cubs are stringing Guzman along slowly in order to avoid a setback with his surgically-repaired shoulder. Look for Guzman to begin the year at Triple-A Iowa and quickly work his way back up to the bigs. The 29-year-old had a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP across 55 relief appearances in 2009. |

"He's here, he'll work, you know he'll do that, and modern medicine is unbelievable. If he gets involved in this sometime, someday, it'll be great. Right now, it's a long way off." |

Sat Feb 12 2011 | 15:48 | Guzman throws off mound for second time |
Angel Guzman threw off a mound Friday for the second time since undergoing shoulder surgery last March. |
Not surprisingly, he's not throwing close to full speed yet, but he's making progress. Barring a setback, Guzman should be ready by the time Opening Day rolls around. He posted a 2.95 ERA and 1.05 WHIP in 55 appearances during the 2009 season and would give the Cubbies a top notch setup man assuming he's made a full recovery, which is a legitimate question given the serious nature of the procedure and his history of injuries. |
