White was granted his unconditional release by the Astros organization Monday, Bryant-Jon Anteola of the Fresno Bee reports. |
White has struggled mightily since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2013, and he posted a 5.56 ERA with an ugly 18:17 K:BB in nine appearances this season for Triple-A Fresno. The 26-year-old will hope to catch on with another organization as he looks to regain the form that made him the 15th overall pick in the 2009 amateur draft. |

You read that correctly. The 2009 first-round pick has as many walks this season as he does strikeouts. White clearly hasn't been the same pitcher since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2013, so don't expect to see him in the majors anytime soon. |

In three spring appearances, White allowed seven earned runs on eight hits and six walks with no strikeouts over four innings. He'll likely open 2015 with Triple-A Fresno after struggling at the same level last year, going 3-6 with a 6.50 ERA, 1.72 WHIP and 53:31 K:BB ratio over 63.2 innings. The former top prospect hasn't flashed any big league potential since recovering from 2013 Tommy John surgery. |

In two Grapefruit League appearances for the Astros this spring, White has allowed six earned runs on six hits and four walks with no strikeouts over two innings. |
A candidate for Houston's fifth rotation spot, White has struggled mightily this spring while starters he's competing against - Roberto Hernandez (0.00 ERA), Samuel Deduno (1.80 ERA) and Dan Straily (5.40 ERA) - have pitched much better. With the first wave of Astros' spring cuts expected this weekend, White could be ticketed to open 2015 with Triple-A Fresno. |

Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, White threw to live hitters Monday and will do the same thing again on Friday. He's only thrown fastballs and changeups thus far but he plans to progress to breaking balls next week. "I'm waiting on the velocity, to be honest," White said. "They basically assured me it just kind of comes. We're still at 10 months, and we're looking at April." The Astros could use White some as a reliever in order to limit his workload, but the plan for now is him returning as a starter. |
