Thu Sep 1217:04Wilyer Abreu Takes A Seat Against Yankees
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu will retreat to the bench for Thursday's series opener in the Bronx against the division-rival New York Yankees. Rob Refsnyder will make the start in right field for the BoSox and will hit third against Yankees left-hander Nestor Cortes. Refnsyder will definitely be a sleeper to take a look at for DFS lineups on Thursday. He's hit .500 with a 1.188 OPS and an RBI in 16 career at-bats against Cortes and has hit .304 (38-for-125) on the year against southpaws, with eight of his 11 home runs coming against them. Abreu, 25, has struggled against lefties this year, slashing .177/.236/.275 with only one of his 15 homers coming against them in 51 at-bats. The Venezuelan outfielder is hitting .265 (93-for-351) overall in his first full season in the big leagues with 15 homers, 55 RBI and seven steals for Boston in 392 plate appearances.

Mon Aug 1919:36Wilyer Abreu, David Hamilton Sitting Against Left-Hander
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu and middle infielder David Hamilton will both take a seat on the bench on Monday against the Houston Astros and left-hander Yusei Kikuchi at Minute Maid Park. Rob Refsnyder is getting the start in left field and will hit third, while Romy Gonzalez is starting at the keystone and is batting fifth on Monday versus Kikuchi. Refsnyder could be a popular DFS play, albeit without much power. He's hitting .375 with an .819 OPS and two RBI in eight career at-bats against Kikuchi, plus he's also batting a cool .304 (31-for-102) with six of his eight home runs on the season against southpaws. Abreu has hit only .178 (8-for-45) with one of his 14 long balls on the year against lefties, while Hamilton has hit a similarly weak .222 (10-for-45) with one of his seven home runs against southpaws in 2024.

Sun Aug 419:24Wilyer Abreu Hits A Pair Of Homers
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu came ready to play during Sunday's game against the Texas Rangers. Abreu has been hot with the bat recently and that continued during Sunday's contest. He went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and four RBI in the 7-2 victory. Abreu has three long balls during the first three games of August. He is hitting well over .300 over his last 25 games or so. Fantasy managers in need of another bat should consider adding Abreu.

Sat Aug 318:36Wilyer Abreu Riding Pine Against Southpaw On Saturday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu is out of the Red Sox lineup on Saturday night as they face off against left-hander Cody Bradford and the Texas Rangers. Boston has gotten great production out of Abreu and his 127 OPS+ but that's been by focusing on using him against right-handers. He hits for a .904 OPS against righties and just a .461 OPS against lefties. With Boston just two games back of a wild card spot, every at-bat will be important for them going forward and it's clear they are choosing to prioritize a platooning strategy. Rob Refsnyder will be getting the start in Abreu's place playing right field and batting second. Fantasy managers and DFS managers alike should ensure to have Refsnyder in their lineups as he's hitting for a .955 OPS against lefties.

Boston Red Sox outfielders Wilyer Abreu and Masataka Yoshida will head to the bench Saturday night for their tilt against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Veteran Rob Refsnyder will spell Abreu in the outfield, and Tyler O'Neill will DH for Yoshida. Abreu is hitting .260 with eight home runs, 29 RBI, seven stolen bases and 35 runs in 251 plate appearances. Yoshida is hitting .260 with four home runs, 24 RBI, zero stolen bases and 20 runs scored in 194 plate appearances. Both players should return to the starting lineup tomorrow for the series finale.

Fri Jul 1208:28Wilyer Abreu Has Huge Game On Thursday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu put together a big performance in Thursday's 7-0 victory versus the Oakland Athletics. Abreu went 3-for-4 in the contest with a double, home run and two RBI, falling a triple shy of the cycle. The 25-year-old has been one of the better waiver wire finds of the season thus far with a .265 batting average to go along with eight homers, 28 RBI and seven stolen bases in 215 at-bats. Abreu continues to be a solid contributor across the board and should have plenty of opportunities the rest of the season to help across most deeper leagues.

Wed Jul 1017:38David Hamilton, Wilyer Abreu Sitting Versus Southpaw
Boston Red Sox middle infielder David Hamilton and outfielder Wilyer Abreu, who both hit from the left side, will take a seat on Wednesday against the visiting Oakland Athletics with left-hander JP Sears on the mound. Jamie Westbrook will get the call to play the keystone and will hit eighth, while Rob Refsnyder draws into the lineup in left field while batting second for the BoSox. Boston sent Enmanuel Valdez to the minors on Tuesday, which basically assures the 26-year-old Hamilton of regular playing time at second base moving forward. His speed (23 stolen bases) makes him worth rostering, even in mixed fantasy leagues. Refsnyder is hitting .300 overall on the year and is also batting .308 (20-for-65) with two of his three homers on the season, making him worth a look as a deep DFS sleeper in the two-hole.

Fri Jul 516:15Wilyer Abreu On The Bench Against Left-Hander
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu is starting the game on the bench on Friday in the Bronx against the division-rival New York Yankees with left-hander Nestor Cortes on the mound. With Abreu getting a day off, Rob Refsnyder will draw into right field and will bat second for the BoSox against Cortes in the series opener. Refsnyder could be a popular DFS sleeper addition to lineups, as he's hit .600 with a 1.400 OPS in his career, albeit in only 10 at-bats, against Cortes. Abreu has been solid in his second year in the big leagues for Boston but is batting just .167 (5-for-30) with none of his six home runs on the year against same-handed pitchers. Refsnyder has minimal power (three homers on the year) but has gone 20-for-61 (.328) with two of his three dingers against lefties in 2024.

Fri Jun 2122:52Wilyer Abreu Likely To Be Activated Saturday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (ankle) was back with the team on Friday before their game against the Cincinnati Reds and is likely to be activated from the 10-day injured list on Saturday. Abreu had been seeing notable playing time before his ankle injury and was hitting .272/.344/.485 with an .829 OPS, six home runs, 22 RBI, seven stolen bases and 26 runs scored in 169 at-bats in 53 games in just his second year in the big leagues. His impending return could be bad news for Masataka Yoshida, who also hits left-handed. While Abreu has been a nice surprise off the waiver wire for fantasy managers in deeper leagues, keep in mind that his underlying numbers point to serious regression the rest of the way with an expected batting average of just .230.

Thu May 2310:23Wilyer Abreu Homers, Drives In Two In Win
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu went 2-for-4 with a home run and walk in Wednesday's 8-5 win over the Rays. The home run was a two-run shot in the sixth, which gave the Sox plenty of breathing room, putting them ahead 8-3 at the time. It was Abreu's fifth home run of the season and pushed his RBI total up to 20. The 24-year-old has also scored 20 times and stolen seven bases, so he's been plenty productive when he's been in the starting lineup. The left-handed hitter is slashing .275/.357/.486 with a .367 wOBA and 133 wRC+ on the year.

Mon May 1314:53Wilyer Abreu Back In Lineup And Hitting Second
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu sat out the team's 3-2 win against the Washington Nationals on Sunday with a left-handed pitcher on the mound. But Abreu will return to the lineup and bat second in Monday's series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. The 24-year-old hasn't seen many opportunities in the two-hole for Boston this season, only hitting there twice over the past 18 games. However, this is now his second consecutive start batting in that spot. That should lead to more run-scoring chances, considering both Tyler O'Neill and Rafael Devers are batting behind him. The young outfielder could also start all four games in this series with the Rays throwing out all right-handed pitchers. He is hitting .282 with three home runs, nine doubles, and 14 RBI in 34 games this season.

Sat May 1120:57Wilyer Abreu Homers To Help Guide Red Sox Over Nationals
Boston Red Sox rookie outfielderWilyer Abreu hopes Saturday's solo homer in the 4-2 win over the Washington Nationals is a sign in the right direction. Abreu hit his third dinger of the season, tying the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning. It was just his fifth hit in May as he came into Saturday's play batting a paltry .190 in 23 at-bats. The 24-year-old will enter Sunday's series finale against the Nationals with a .284/.378/.480slash line with three home runs, 14 RBI, 18 runs, and five stolen bases.

Tue Apr 3023:34Wilyer Abreu Tallies Three Hits On Tuesday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double and triple and tallied his 12th RBI of the season in Tuesday's victory over the San Francisco Giants. Abreu lined a leadoff double in the third inning and scored courtesy of a Rob Refsnyder single. Then in the fourth inning, Abreu hit a sharp line drive to right field, which turned into an RBI triple. Later in the eighth, Abreu would hit a single to cap off his productive night at the plate. The 24-year-old has been one of the best hitters in baseball over the past two weeks and is now sitting with an excellent .316/.391/.526 stat line, making him an excellent waiver-wire target, even in shallow formats.

Mon Apr 2212:32Wilyer Abreu Collects Two RBI On Sunday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu went 3-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and a run scored in Sunday's 6-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. This will bring his hit streak to four games now. Abreu is slashing .280/.390/.440 with a home run, seven RBI, nine runs, and four stolen bases over 18 games in 2024. The Red Sox are off Monday, and he will look to continue his hitting streak in Tuesday's matchup against the Cleveland Guardians. Abreu is a speculative add in most fantasy leagues. He will be a strong streaming candidate while swinging a hot bat.

Mon Apr 1512:12Wilyer Abreu To Play Against Right-Handers
Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that outfielder Wilyer Abreu will play every game against right-handed pitchers. It's why outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela got the start at shortstop on Monday against the Cleveland Guardians. Abreu made his major-league debut last year and slashed .316/.388/.474 with an .862 OPS, two home runs, 14 RBI, three stolen bases and 10 runs scored in just 28 games played. In his first 11 contests in 2024, Abreu has gone 6-for-26 (.231) with no homers, two RBI and a steal in 29 plate appearances. The 24-year-old can be an asset for those in deep-mixed fantasy leagues now that he'll be playing regularly. He's a strong defender and will be mostly useful in leagues that count on-base percentage due to his patient approach as a hitter.

Mon Apr 118:16Wilyer Abreu Back On The Bench Monday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu is back on the bench for Monday's series opener versus the Oakland A's and right-hander Joe Boyle. The 24-year-old went 1-for-3 with a walk in Sunday's series finale with the Mariners but will begin a series with the A's on the bench. Abreu made his MLB debut in the 2023 season and impressed with a .316 average with two homers and three stolen bases across 85 trips to the plate. At the same time, he also benefited from a bloated .431 BABIP and struck out in an elevated 27.1% of his plate appearances. Tyler O'Neill will move over to right field where Abreu played on Sunday in Seattle.

Fri Jan 2619:19Wilyer Abreu Likely To Start In Right Field
Boston Red Sox rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu, who impressed in limited action late in 2023, appears likely to serve as the team's starting right fielder to begin the season, although fellow rookie outfielder Ceddanne Rafaela could also factor into the outfield picture in Boston. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has also said this offseason that Abreu could see significant playing time in 2024 after the 24-year-old went 24-for-76 (.316) with two home runs, 14 RBI, three stolen bases and 10 runs scored in his first 28 big-league games to close out last season. Abreu is good on defense and hits the ball hard, but he doesn't run all that much and probably isn't going to hit for a very high average in his first full year in the majors. Still, if he's playing regularly in 2024, he'll at least be worthy of rostering in all AL-only fantasy leagues.

Tue Sep 19 202316:51Wilyer Abreu Remains Out Tuesday
Boston Red Sox rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu (hand) is missing another game on Tuesday as the team takes on the Texas Rangers and right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. Abreu injured his left hand while crashing into the outfield wall on Sunday and will now miss his second straight game. Fantasy managers should continue to consider the 24-year-old day-to-day. The Red Sox will roll with Masataka Yoshida, Adam Duvall and Alex Verdugo from left to right field on Tuesday. Abreu made his major-league debut with the BoSox on Aug. 22 and has held his own at the plate since then, going 20-for-55 (.364) with a home run, five doubles, 10 RBI, three stolen bases and eight runs scored in 20 games played. It remains to be seen how much playing time he'll get with less than two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Sun Sep 17 202319:25Wilyer Abreu Looking To Play Monday
Boston Red Sox outfielder Wilyer Abreu (hand) hurt his hand on defense during the last play of Sunday's 3-2 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays. However, the 24-year-old told reporters after the game that he thinks he'll be available Monday against the Texas Rangers, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Abreu has shown an ability to hit in his 19 games this season, as he's slashed .370/.443/.519 with one home run, eight runs, 10 RBI, and three stolen bases. The rookie is currently on the strong side of a platoon but is still a decent deep-league option for fantasy managers targeting runs, power, and speed.

Thu Aug 31 202316:27Wilyer Abreu Activated From Paternity List
The Boston Red Sox activated rookie outfielder Wilyer Abreu from the paternity list on Thursday and optioned shortstop David Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. For now, both Abreu and prospect Ceddanne Rafaela will remain in Boston with rosters set to expand on Friday. The 24-year-old Abreu has been away from the team since Monday. With Jarren Duran (toe) now out for the rest of the 2023 season, Abreu could continue to see regular playing time in Boston's outfield after starting his MLB career on the right note. Abreu has gone 6-for-17 with a home run, five RBI and three runs scored in his first five games.
