Varvaro (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day DL on Wednesday. |
This was an inevitability with Varvaro undergoing season-ending surgery Tuesday to repair a torn flexor tendon in his right arm. He now faces a six-month rehabilitation process. Carlos Peguero, was claimed off waivers from Texas and will fill Varvaro's spot on the 40-man roster. |

The Cubs returned Varvaro to the Red Sox on Sunday after he was diagnosed with a torn right flexor tendon in his elbow. The Red Sox placed Varvaro on the 15-day DL. |
According to the Staten Island Advance, Varvaro will undergo surgery Tuesday to address the tear in his pitching arm, ending his season and voiding the Cubs' waiver claim of the right-hander back on May 3. Varvaro never logged an official appearance with the Cubs or any of their affiliates, so both teams concluded it would be appropriate to return the pitcher to Boston. The reliever is expected to require six months of rehabilitation after having surgery, putting him on track to resume throwing in November. |

Varvaro passed through waivers unclaimed and is expected to report to Triple-A Iowa, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. |
Varvaro, who got off to a poor start with the Red Sox, was claimed by the Cubs on May 3, but he did not appear in a game with the team before being DFA'd last week. Passing through waivers unclaimed, Varvaro will head to Iowa in hopes of proving he's worth another call-up at some point. |
Wed May 6 2015 | 15:16 | Varvaro designated for assignment Wednesday |
Varvaro was designated for assignment Wednesday, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reports. |
Varvaro, who was claimed off waivers over the weekend after a dreadful start with the Red Sox, was recalled for Tuesday's game but did not see any action. He'll now head to Triple-A Iowa, where the Cubs hope he'll be able to revert to his 2014 form, when he posted a 2.63 ERA in 54.2 innings for Atlanta. |
Tue May 5 2015 | 16:55 | Varvaro recalled by Cubs on Tuesday |
Varvaro was recalled by the Cubs on Tuesday, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports. |
Varvaro got off to a poor start with Boston this season, allowing five runs on 14 hits and six walks in 11 innings, leading to his designation for assignment last week. The Cubs took a flier on him and will welcome Varvaro aboard, with Gonzalez Germen optioned in a corresponding move. Varvaro posted a sub-2.83 ERA in three of four seasons from 2011-14, and a sub-1.10 WHIP in two of those years. |
Sun May 3 2015 | 14:48 | Varvaro claimed off waivers by Cubs on Sunday |
Varvaro was claimed off waivers by the Cubs on Sunday, MLB.com's Carrie Muskat reports. |
The Red Sox dumped Varvaro after he posted an uninspiring 4.09 ERA and 8:6 K:BB ratio over 11 innings, but he could represent an upgrade for the Cubs over their current crop of low-leverage relievers. He'll likely begin his stint with the new organization at Triple-A Iowa, before potentially earning his way to the big-league bullpen if he performs well. |
Wed Apr 29 2015 | 15:04 | Varvaro designated for assignment Wednesday |
Varvaro was designated for assignment Wednesday, Rob Bradford of WEEI.com reports. |
Varvaro has struggled with the big league team thus far as he sports just an 8:6 K:B ratio and has surrendered four runs in his last three outings, so he'll get sent down to make room for Tom Layne and Dalier Hinojosa. The righty will likely join the Triple-A bullpen and could be in line to rejoin the major league club at some point. |

Varvaro made his regular-season debut for Boston, pitching 1.1 scoreless innings in Friday night's 19-inning win over the Yankees. |
Varvaro was able to give Boston multiple outs on an night when every reliever got work. He's going to work in middle relief and has a history of being tough on left-handers. |

Varvaro pitched a scoreless inning in Saturday's game against the Twins. |
Varvaro, a right hander, was summoned to face three left-handers. After striking out the first batter, he induced two weak groundball outs. Varvaro has a good career mark against lefties (.196 BAA) and that skill will be a factor when manager John Farrell finalizes his roster. Another factor favoring Varvaro making the team is his contract status -- he's out of minor-league options. |
Wed Mar 4 2015 | 06:58 | Varvaro pitched scoreless inning Tuesday |
Varvaro pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday, allowing a two-out double before getting a groundout, the Boston Globe reports. |
The Red Sox were surprised that Varvaro became available and jumped at the opportunity to get him after the Braves designated him for assignment. He's made 123 appearances the last two seasons and established enough of a record to show he can be a valuable middle reliever. Boston sees Varvaro slotting in behind the set up guys. He's out of minor-league options and is a serious contender for a spot on the roster. |
Wed Dec 17 2014 | 12:19 | Vararo traded to Red Sox on Wednesday |
Vararo was traded to the Red Sox on Wednesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. |
Varvaro was designated for assignment by the Braves on Monday as part of a move that brought Alberto Callaspo to the team. He had a terrific 2014 season, posting a 2.63 ERA and 1.08 WHIP over 54.2 innings while striking out 50. He could see some meaningful innings with the Red Sox in 2015, but doesn't project to receive save opportunities. |
Mon Dec 15 2014 | 18:46 | Varvaro designated for assignment on Monday |
Varvaro was designated for assignment on Monday, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. |
The move comes in response to the finalization of Alberto Callaspo's deal Monday, which necessitated that Atlanta clear a spot on the 40-man roster. Varvaro, 29, went 3-3 in 61 appearances last season, posting a 2.63 ERA and 1.079 WHIP over 54.2 innings. |

Anthony Varvaro was pounded for five runs in an one-plus innings of relief by the Orioles on Friday. |
Varvaro has given up 11 earned runs in nine innings this spring. He's supposed to be a member of Atlanta's bullpen and he likely still will be, but he'll need to do better than this to keep his pot once the staff gets healthier. |

Fri Aug 30 2013 | 23:04 | Anthony Varvaro earns first career save |
Anthony Varvaro earned his first career save in Friday's victory over the Marlins. |
With Craig Kimbrel unavailable after working the previous three days, the 28-year old Varvaro worked two scoreless innings of relief, surrendering just one hit, to protect a one-run lead. With a 3.13 ERA and 1.23 WHIP in 60 1/3 innings, he's developing into another very dependable option in the Braves bullpen. |

Wed Apr 10 2013 | 15:28 | Varvaro or Martinez likely to be sent out |
Anthony Varvaro or Cristhian Martinez will likely be designated for assignment in order to make room for the newly-acquired Luis Ayala on the roster. |
The Braves were nearly forced to make the same decision at the end of spring training, but both began the season in the bullpen after Jonny Venters (elbow) landed on the disabled list. Varvaro hasn't been as successful as Martinez in the big leagues, so he's likely the odd man out. |

Tue Mar 26 2013 | 09:05 | Braves could trade Martinez or Varvaro |
Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes that the Braves could trade either Anthony Varvaro or Cristian Martinez if Jordan Walden (back) is ready for the season. |
If Walden is ready, there won't be room for both pitchers on the Opening Day roster. Varvaro and Martinez are out of options and likely wouldn't clear waivers, so the Braves could look to find a trade partner. Martinez, 31, is coming off a 3.91 ERA and 65/19 K/BB ratio over 73 2/3 innings last season. Varvaro hasn't enjoyed nearly the same success, posting a 4.43 ERA in 34 major league appearances, so he's more likely to end up elsewhere. |
