Thu Jul 13 2023 | 12:19 | Jonathan Schoop Released By The Tigers |
Detroit Tigers infielder Jonathan Schoop has been released. The 31-year-old was designated for assignment earlier this week and has now been officially released. Schoop put up a poor .211/.279/.271 batting line with six home runs and 15 RBI across 133 at-bats this season, which wasn't getting the job done. He should be able to sign on with another team and serve as bench depth in the second half. |

Thu Jul 13 2023 | 12:17 | Tigers Release Jonathan Schoop |
The Detroit Tigers released veteran infielder Jonathan Schoop on Wednesday. Schoop cleared waivers after the team designated him for assignment last Friday, and now he'll hit the open market. The 31-year-old just didn't have any success with the bat in the first half of the 2023 season with Detroit, slashing .213/.278/.272 with no home runs, eight doubles, seven RBI and 15 runs scored in 151 trips to the plate and 55 games. The career .254 hitter had his lone 30-home run season back in 2017 with the Baltimore Orioles, when he was selected to his only All-Star game. Schoop hit 22 home runs two years ago with the Tigers, but he's pretty much fallen off the fantasy radar since then. He'll be hoping to sign a minor-league deal with another team for the second half. |

Sat Jul 8 2023 | 09:24 | Jonathan Schoop Designated For Assignment On Friday |
The Detroit Tigers designated second/third baseman Jonathan Schoop for assignment on Friday. The 31-year-old managed to cede his roster spot even on a Tigers team with a relatively thin infield depth chart. Schoop has slashed a lowly .204/.248/.311 with 11 home runs, 45 RBI, and five stolen bases over 617 at-bats since 2022. The former All-Star figures to get a chance with another club as a bench piece, but Schoop could go through waivers unclaimed before potentially becoming a free agent. |

Sat Nov 5 2022 | 13:25 | Jonathan Schoop Plans To Return In 2023 |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop has an opt-out clause in his contract, but he intends to return to the team for the final year of his deal in 2023. If Schoop chose to opt out, he would be leaving $7.5 million on the table next year after signing a two-year, $15 million extension with Detroit in August of 2021. It makes even more sense after the 31-year-old veteran hit just .202/.239/.322 with 11 home runs, 38 RBI, 48 runs scored and five stolen bases in 481 at-bats for the Tigers in 2022. Because of his poor season, Schoop won't be guaranteed regular playing time heading into the 2023 season, and he'll need to play well in spring training. There isn't much appeal in fantasy with Schoop moving forward. |

Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop isn't in the team's lineup for the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Seattle Mariners and right-hander Chris Flexen. Instead, Harold Castro will move over to second base and bat cleanup. The 28-year-old is hitting .272 with a .301 on-base percentage and seven home runs in 438 plate appearances this season. He's worth a look as a streaming option for fantasy managers in deeper leagues. |

Ryan Kreidler will get the start at second instead and bat seventh against the Royals. Kreidler has logged 61 plate appearances in the Majors this season, hitting .212 with a .271 on-base percentage and a home run. He could be worth a look as a streaming option in deeper leagues. |

The 30-year-old is batting .200 this season with a .234 on-base percentage, nine home runs, and five stolen bases in 458 plate appearances for the Tigers. It'll be Harold Castro starting at second base instead on Tuesday. Castro, who is hitting second against Houston, is batting .273 with a .304 on-base percentage, and six home runs in 388 plate appearances. He's worth a look for fantasy managers in search of streaming options in deeper leagues. |

Thu Sep 8 2022 | 18:11 | Jonathan Schoop Activated From Injured List |
The Detroit Tigers activated infielder Jonathan Schoop (ankle) from the 10-day injured list on Thursday and recalled left-hander Joey Wentz from the minors. In corresponding moves, the team optioned right-hander Luis Castillo and infielder Josh Lester to Triple-A Toledo. Schoop initially landed on the injured list with a sprained ankle on Aug. 20. Expect him to return as the team's everyday second baseman for the start of a series against the Kansas City Royals on the road on Friday. Before his injury the 30-year-old veteran was hitting only .202/.235/.318 with nine home runs, 34 RBI, 40 runs scored and five stolen bases in 447 plate appearances and 115 games for the Tigers. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect much production from Schoop to close out the year. |

Wed Aug 31 2022 | 18:12 | Jonathan Schoop Could Begin Rehab Assignment This Weekend |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop (ankle) could begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend, but skipper A.J. Hinch said it's unlikely that Schoop will rejoin the Tigers in Los Angeles from Sept. 5-7. If everything goes well on his rehab assignment, it's more likely that he'll return from the injured list for the series against the Kansas City Royals on Sept. 9-11. The 30-year-old has resumed baseball activities and is getting closer to a return. Schoop has hit just .202/.235/.318 with nine home runs, 34 RBI, 40 runs scored and five stolen bases in 447 plate appearances over 115 games and hasn't been much of a help in fantasy leagues. With youngsters Spencer Torkelson and Ryan Kreidler joining the Tigers when rosters expand on Thursday, Schoop could be on the bench more often when he's healthy enough to return. |

Short, Harold Castro, Kody Clemens, and Willi Castro could all see playing time at second base while Schoop is on the injured list. |

Sun Aug 21 2022 | 11:01 | Jonathan Schoop Out On Sunday |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop (ankle) is not in the starting lineup on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels. Schoop sprained his right ankle on Saturday and had to leave the game early, so it shouldn't come as a big surprise that he's out for the series finale. He's considered day-to-day for now. The 30-year-old is hitting just .202/.235/.318 with nine home runs, 34 RBI, 40 runs and five stolen bases this year. Willi Castro is manning the keystone on Sunday and is hitting sixth against Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani. Castro has been hot of late, going 9-for-32 (.281) with a home run and three RBI in nine games in the last two weeks, but he'll still be a tough sell in DFS against Ohtani. |

Sat Aug 20 2022 | 14:09 | Jonathan Schoop Exits Early With Ankle Injury |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop (ankle) has left Saturday's contest against the Los Angeles Angels early with an ankle injury. The 30-year-old was thrown out at the home plate while trying to score in the second inning and "immediately" started touching his ankle, per beat writer Evan Petzold. He limped off the field and has since been replaced in the lineup by Kody Clemens. The Tigers should provide an update on Schoop's status at the end of Saturday's game but fantasy managers should consider him day-to-day for now. |

Mon May 16 2022 | 21:28 | Jonathan Schoop Hits Third Home Run Monday |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop played a large part in Monday's 3-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays, hitting a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Altogether, he was 1-for-4 with no strikeouts. Schoop is in the midst of his worst offensive campaign to date, as he's slashing .162/.204/.262 with three home runs, and just 10 runs and eight RBI. The 30-year-old has been a quality bat for the majority of his career, with a career .258 batting average and 166 HRs over 1037 games, but his fantasy value is looking bleak right now. Fantasy managers can move on and look for other options on the waiver wire. |

Thu May 5 2022 | 16:33 | Jonathan Schoop Heading To The Bench On Thursday |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop is out of the starting lineup for Thursday's series opener against the Houston Astros. Harold Castro will be covering the keystone and batting seventh in the game. After going 0-for-8 with three strikeouts in Wednesday's doubleheader, Schoop is now slashing .136/.174/.193 over 23 games on the year. He has just three extra-base hits (one home run, two doubles). Schoop is a notoriously streaky hitter. Last year, he slashed just .198/.230/.284 in April, but went on to mash 10 home runs with a .340/.379/.698 slash line in June. He can certainly be dropped in all standard fantasy leagues, but keep your eye out for one of his hot streaks. |

Mon Sep 27 2021 | 17:10 | Jonathan Schoop Hits His 21st Home Run |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI in the team's 8-7 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Monday. The home run was his 21st of the year. It's been a strange season for the 29-year-old veteran. He started the year off ice cold, including a .198/.230/.284 slash line in April. He then went on to hit 10 home runs and post a 1.077 OPS in June. He's been hitting relatively well over the second half of the year, but his power numbers have essentially been non-existent outside of his monster June. Monday's home run was just his third since August 4. However, despite the strange power fluctuations, he has a solid .278 batting average on the year, well above his career .261 batting average. |

Fri Aug 20 2021 | 07:54 | Jonathan Schoop Tallies Three Hits On Thursday |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop helped the team put together a strong offensive performance on Thursday, but it wasn't enough as the team fell 13-10 to the Los Angeles Angels. He went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored in the game. Schoop has managed just one home run since July 18, but he's continued to produce in other areas over the past month. Through 16 games this month, he's slashed .313/.352/.433 with five doubles and nine runs. With his power numbers subsiding lately, he isn't a must-start player at this point, but he's still at the very least a worthy starter in most formats. |

Sat Aug 7 2021 | 18:53 | Jonathan Schoop Signs Two-Year Extension With Detroit |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop has agreed to a two-year contract extension worth $15 million, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. Schoop has been one of the more productive hitters for the Tigers since joining the team in 2020, as he is slashing .286/.331/.470 with 26 home runs, 87 RBI and 86 runs scored over 151 games with Detroit. This locks Schoop in through his age-31 season, and he should continue to be among the better power-hitting second basemen in fantasy going forward. |

Thu Aug 5 2021 | 09:15 | Jonathan Schoop Blasts His 18th Home Run On Wednesday |
Detroit Tigers second baseman Jonathan Schoop provided the only run for the team in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox. Schoop went 2-for-3 with a double, two walks and a solo home run in the game. The home run was his 18th of the year and his first since July 18. Over 105 games on the year, Schoop is slashing .285/.331/.468 with 62 RBI and 59 runs to go along with his 18 home runs. He should be rostered and started in all leagues as he continues to deliver strong all-around production. |
