Mitchell enjoyed a breakout campaign that included 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles within the Panthers' stout defense last season. Such production earned Mitchell a lucrative five-year contract with the Steelers this offseason. Although a groin injury kept him sidelined for the first week of practice, Mitchell will now join his new teammates as Pittsburgh's starting free safety next to veteran Tory Polamalu. Expect the hard-hitting Mitchell to increase his practice workload leading up to Saturday's preseason opener versus the Giants.

Tue Mar 11 201418:27Steelers grab hard-hitting FS Mike Mitchell
Steelers agreed to terms with FS Mike Mitchell, formerly of the Panthers.
Mitchell, 27 in June, had a number of teams hot on his trail. The Steelers are replacing an aging Ryan Clark with a young, hard hitter in Mitchell at free safety next to Troy Polamalu. Mitchell is coming off a career-year, and it'll be interesting to see if he was a product of the Panthers' stout front seven. The talent on the defensive line in Pittsburgh isn't comparable. Mitchell can cover and play the run.

Sat Mar 8 201416:56Mike Mitchell linked to at least four teams
The Charlotte Observer reports free agent FS Mike Mitchell is drawing interest from the Bears, Eagles, Broncos and Falcons.
Mitchell had a breakout 2013 playing for the Panthers on a one-year deal, but is unlikely to be brought back due to salary cap constraints. He appeared in all 16 games last season, finishing with 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Mitchell can play both safety positions and shouldn't have any trouble landing a multi-year deal.

Both are priorities for Carolina, but the Panthers' salary cap concerns have made re-signing both difficult. Mitchell flourished as a starter in 2013, recording 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. Ginn posted a 36-556-5 line in a breakout 2013 campaign.

Thu Feb 27 201419:05Panthers want to re-sign FS Mike Mitchell
The Panthers will reportedly "look to lock up" free agent FS Mike Mitchell.
Playing on a one-year deal last season, Mitchell racked up 66 tackles, four interceptions, 3.5 sacks and two forced fumbles. He was a play-maker for a secondary that doesn't have many of them. Mitchell is still only 27. He'd have a nice little market if he reached free agency.

Wed Feb 26 201416:34Redskins like free agent FS Mike Mitchell
ESPN Redskins reporter John Keim hears the team likes free agent FS Mike Mitchell.
The Redskins have holes at both safety spots. Mitchell can play either one. He's coming off a career-year and will look to cash in after playing on a one-year, $1 million deal in Carolina. It's also quite possible he was a product of the Panthers' fearsome front seven. Mitchell is a big-time hitter on the back end and does his best work as a blitzed and in coverage.

Sun Feb 9 201412:20Mike Mitchell to be a Panthers priority
The Charlotte Observer expects the Panthers to make re-signing FS Mike Mitchell a priority.
Mitchell greatly outperformed his one-year, $1 million deal in 2013. He made 15 starts, making 67 tackles, four sacks, two forced fumbles, and four interceptions. Mitchell is also known as a big hitter who racks up the occasional personal foul penalty. He'll turn 27 in June and is our No. 10 free agent safety. The former second-round pick should be able to land a multi-year deal.

Sun Sep 1 201309:28Mitchell wins Panthers' strong safety job
Mike Mitchell has won the Panthers' starting strong safety job.
Mitchell didn't have much competition for the spot. He had been running ahead of D.J. Campbell, Haruki Nakamura, and UDFA Robert Lester for much of the summer. Campbell and Lester were part of the Panthers' final cuts, while Nakamura will back up both Mitchell and FS Charles Godfrey. Mitchell is fearless and plays with reckless abandon. He'll likely rack up plenty of 15-yard penalties.

Wed Jul 31 201312:08Michael Mitchell getting bulk of SS reps
Mike Mitchell has gotten the majority of first-team strong safety reps at Panthers camp.
Mitchell is running ahead of Haruki Nakamura and D.J. Campbell, as expected. The battle at corner back is taking shape as well, with Drayton Florence and Captain Munnerlyn settling in with the 1s. These competitions are far from over, but the Panthers are trying to plug gaping holes with small fingers. Their secondary will be one to attack from a fantasy perspective.
