Free (ankle) was on the field Thursday for the beginning of training camp.
He missed OTAs over the summer as he recovered from ankle surgery, but it looks like Free will be healthy and manning his usual right tackle position come Week 1.

Free won't participate in next week's OTAs as he continues his recovery from ankle surgery, Mickey Spagnola of DallasCowboys.com reports.
Free should be fine to take his spot at right tackle by the time Week 1 rolls around, but in the meantime new depth O-linemen Chaz Green, Laurence Gibson and possibly La'el Collins will get some reps at the position.
Sat Mar 7 201510:49Free has signed three-year deal with Cowboys
Free has signed a three-year deal with the Cowboys, Todd Archer of ESPN reports.
This takes one of the top free-agent tackles off the board and allows the Cowboys to return what was one of the best offensive lines in football. As far as fantasy goes, the outlook of whoever ends up starting at running back for Dallas has just gotten a little better.
Thu Jan 15 201511:47Free will undergo ankle surgery next week
Free will undergo ankle surgery next week, David Helman of DallasCowboys.com reports.
The ankle injury cost him his starting spot at right tackle at the end of the season, allowing Jermey Parnell to audition for a full-time gig in his place. Both Free and Parnell are free agents this offseason, so the Cowboys will have some decisions to make.

Free is out for Sunday's game against the Colts and has a stress fracture in his foot, Ian Rapoport reports.
Without Free and right guard Zack Martin not at 100 percent, the Dallas running game and Demarco Murray owners could be in trouble this weekend, especially when Murray is dealing with that broken hand.
Mon Dec 15 201410:30Free sprained ankle during Sunday's win over Eagles
Free sprained his ankle during Sunday's win over the Eagles, DallasCowboys.com reports.
He ended up missing the entire second half, with Jermey Parnell subbing in for him at right tackle. Free's status going forward should become clearer as the week progresses, but if he does miss Week 16's contest the Cowboys' offensive line wouldn't experience a big downgrade with Parnell getting the start instead.
Sun Nov 9 201411:43Free (foot) active for Sunday's game against Jaguars
Free (foot) is active for Sunday's game against the Jaguars.
He'll man his usual spot in the starting lineup at right tackle.
Wed Nov 5 201410:16Free (foot) back at practice on Wednesday
Free (foot) was back at practice on Wednesday, the Dallas Morning News reports.
Jermey Parnell has been solid at right tackle in his absence, so the Cowboys don't need to rush Free back into the lineup, but if he holds up in practice the rest of the week he'll likely get the nod.
Tue Oct 14 201409:44Free will miss three or four weeks due to fracture in foot
Free will miss three or four weeks due to a fracture in his foot, Todd Archer of ESPN Dallas reports.
Jermey Parnell will handle right tackle duties in Free's absence.
Mon Oct 13 201410:51Free left Sunday's win over Seahawks in fourth quarter with foot...
Free left Sunday's win over the Seahawks in the fourth quarter with a foot injury, the Dallas Morning News reports.
The Cowboys don't think the injury is serious, but they'll have a better idea of the nature of the issue later this week. Jermey Parnell would take over at right tackle if Free misses any games.

Free struggled badly against Cameron Wake in Saturday's preseason game against the Dolphins, allowing two sacks on Tony Romo.
The Cowboys' right tackle is in the final year of his contract, and while first round pick Zack Martin will start at right guard this season he could easily slide over into Free's spot in 2015. Free will need to step up his game in the regular season if he wants to pull down starter money with his next contract, whether from Dallas or from another organization.
Sun May 18 201414:01Cowboys to keep Doug Free at right tackle
The Cowboys are expected to keep Doug Free at right tackle this season.
No. 16 pick Zack Martin lined up at right guard during rookie minicamp and is ticketed for that job in Week 1. Free enjoyed a remarkable bounce-back year in 2013 after a dismal 2012 season, grading out 18th among 76 qualifiers in Pro Football Focus' tackle ratings. Free, 30, is now entering his contract year.

Sat May 3 201413:05Doug Free's extension depends on draft
ESPN's Todd Archer believes the Cowboys will extend RT Doug Free's contract if they are unable to land a top tackle in next week's draft.
Free is coming off an outstanding, bounce-back season but is already 30-years-old and would likely be looking for a hefty extension. The Cowboys may instead opt to draft a versatile player like Norte Dame G/T Zack Martin, play him or Free at RG in 2014, and then allow Free to walk next offseason. Either way, the Cowboys look to have a solid offensive line heading into 2014.

Sun Mar 30 201410:56Cowboys could kick RT Free inside to guard
The Cowboys have entertained the idea of moving RT Doug Free inside to guard.
It's not the first we've heard of this. The Cowboys don't seem to be sold on RG Mackenzy Bernadeau and could select a right tackle in May's draft. Free is coming off an outstanding season after a dismal 2013. He played right guard all last preseason. Owner Jerry Jones was gushing over Free most of last summer.

Sun Feb 16 201412:28Doug Free expected back with Cowboys
Cowboys RT Doug Free is expected to be back in Dallas in 2014.
The Cowboys took a chance on Free in 2013 and it paid off, as he turned his career around as an invaluable pass protector opposite LT Tyron Smith. Owed an affordable $3.5 million base salary, Free should return as a locked-in starter. The Cowboys' offensive line is in relatively good shape heading to 2014.

Mon Jan 13 201413:26Doug Free underwent ankle scope
Cowboys RT Doug Free underwent a "cleanout" ankle procedure following the season.
He's expected to be 100 percent before the offseason program. Free bounced back in a major way from an awful 2012 this season, nearly cutting his penalties in half (15-8) and improving tremendously as a pass blocker. Owed $3.5 million in 2014, Free is very likely to return as Dallas' starting right tackle.

Tue Aug 27 201320:44Jerry gushes about Doug Free at guard
Speaking Tuesday, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones raved about Doug Free's performance at right guard in Saturday's regular season dress rehearsal.
Jer believes Free was "nothing short of amazing" as he squared off with Bengals DT Geno Atkins. "He was quick with his hands, that was a real plus. . It was impressive. I don't want to get too far over our skis here, but it looked good." Jones is impressed by most everything Cowboys related these days, but it's safe to say Free will be sticking at guard for good.

Mon Aug 26 201318:25Doug Free to right guard may be permanent
Coach Jason Garrett indicated that Doug Free may stay at right guard permanently.
Garrett said the Cowboys had been thinking about kicking Free inside for months. They were finally able to do it once RT Jermey Parnell (hamstring) returned to practice last week. Free started the regular season dress rehearsal at right guard, and Pro Football Focus gave him a solid grade in pass protection. Once everyone is healthy, the Cowboys appear to want a front five that consists of LT Tyron Smith, LG Ronald Leary, C Travis Frederick, RG Free, and RT Parnell. That'd still be one of the weaker units in the league.

Wed Aug 21 201319:23Doug Free taking snaps at right guard
Cowboys OT Doug Free took snaps at right guard Wednesday.
Usual RG Mackenzy Bernadeau slid over to the left, where Nate Livings and Ronald Leary are both recovering from surgery. "With the injury situations we have had up front, we are just looking at different combinations," coach Jason Garrett said. That may be the case, but it's also an indication Jeremy Parnell is winning the "battle" at right tackle.

Tue May 21 201320:07Free and Parnell rotating as expected
Doug Free and Jermey Parnell are splitting time at right tackle in Cowboys OTAs.
It's what the Cowboys did down the stretch last season, and it will likely continue through training camp. OC Bill Callahan believes Free hasn't let his pay-cut become a distraction. "I'm really proud of the way Doug has handled everything that has transpired in the offseason," Callahan said. "He's been very positive." Free should have a slight edge over Parnell, who failed to run with the job when given the opportunity in 2012.
