Fri Mar 15 201317:27Ravens sign Cowboys castoff DE Marcus Spears
Ravens agreed to terms with DE Marcus Spears, formerly of the Cowboys, on a two-year, $3.55 million contract.
Earlier on Friday afternoon, the Ravens were said to have "serious" interest in Spears. They made the deal happen with the Cowboys' castoff. Spears, 30, has zero pass-rush ability, but he can hold his own against the run. He'll be a backup in Baltimore.

Fri Mar 15 201314:45Ravens have interest in Marcus Spears
The Ravens reportedly have "serious interest" in free agent DE Marcus Spears.
Spears, 30, has been a bust since Dallas selected him 20th overall in the 2005 draft, but he'd add a 6-foot-4, 315-pound presence at "five technique" in the Ravens' 3-4 defense. Spears would likely be a rotational end with Baltimore.

Wed Mar 13 201317:37Cowboys officially part with DE Spears
Cowboys released DE Marcus Spears as a June 1 cut.
As expected. Spears had no guaranteed money left on his deal and has been underperforming for virtually his entire career. Since the Cowboys took him 20th overall in 2005, Spears has totaled 10 sacks and been an average run-stopper at best. Now 30 years old, we wouldn't expect a robust market.

Mon Jan 28 201312:41Spears' days with Cowboys are 'over'
The Dallas Morning News says DE Marcus Spears' days with the Cowboys are "over."
Spears just signed a five-year deal with the Cowboys prior to the 2011 season, but he has been a bust since being a first-round pick way back in 2005. Turning 30 in March, Spears is due $2 million in 2013, but has no guaranteed money left on his deal. He played in 15 games in 2012, starting six, and recorded 25 tackles. Spears is decent against the run but has no pass rush ability.

Mon Jun 25 201210:14Marcus Spears returns to the left side
Marcus Spears has moved back to the left defensive end spot.
Spears' move to the right side last season turned out to be a disaster. He posted a career-low in tackles (16) while managing just one sack. "It's like telling a right-handed shooter to shoot left-handed. It was completely different." When comfortable, Spears is at least serviceable as a run-stuffer.

Wed Sep 7 201113:21Marcus Spears returns to practice Wednesday
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears (groin) returned to practice on Wednesday.
Spears strained his groin on August 22, missing the Cowboys' final few exhibition games. He's tentatively expected to start against the Jets Sunday. Shonn Greene remains a quality RB2 start in non-PPR leagues. Spears probably won't be in the best of shape, and Dallas' run defense sputtered in preseason.

Tue Aug 23 201119:26Spears expected to miss rest of preseason
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears is expected to miss the rest of the preseason with a strained groin.
Spears is frustrated that the injury will take away from his progress learning DC Rob Ryan's defense, but he expects to be back for the season opener. The Cowboys have plenty of depth with Igor Olshansky and Jason Hatcher as rotational ends.

Fri Jul 29 201116:06Cowboys strike $19.2 million deal w/DE Spears
Cowboys agreed to terms with DE Marcus Spears on a five-year, $19.2 million contract.
As ESPN's Adam Schefter notes, this leaves less money in the fold for a Nnamdi Asomugha run. We'd bet pretty heavily that Aso goes to the Jets. The Spears move is a serious head scratcher. He's generated no free agency buzz all offseason, and the Cowboys appear likely to lose Jason Hatcher in addition to new Redskins DE Stephen Bowen. Spears figures to return as Dallas' starter opposite Igor Olshansky. Neither is a playmaker, and NT Jay Ratliff showed up to camp at a lightweight 285 pounds on Friday.

Mon Feb 28 201115:20DAL not trying to re-sign Spears, Sensabaugh
The Cowboys will not attempt to re-sign free agent DE Marcus Spears or free agent SS Gerald Sensabaugh.
The Cowboys gave Spears less money than "backups" Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher last year, and he landed on injured reserve with a strained (probably torn) calf muscle in November. They'll be more interested in bringing back Bowen and Hatcher. Sensabaugh will also hit the open market. According to ESPN Dallas, the Cowboys are looking for a replacement in the draft.

Wed Nov 10 201011:54Marcus Spears lands on injured reserve
Cowboys placed DE Marcus Spears on injured reserve with a strained calf, ending his season.
Spears probably will be healthy enough to play sometime next month, but the Cowboys just couldn't afford to have him taking up a roster spot with Jason Hatcher (groin) and Sean Lissemore (ankle) also nursing injuries. Stephen Bowen is expected to take Spears' place in the starting lineup.
Wed Nov 10 201010:46Spears, Owusu-Ansah could wind up on IR
The Cowboys are considering placing DE Marcus Spears and KR Akwasi Owusu-Ansah on injured reserve.
Spears will be sidelined at least a month with a calf injury, and Owusu-Ansah is dealing with a high ankle sprain. The Cowboys could use the roster space, as they're currently down three defensive linemen. Former Giant defensive end Jeremy Clark has been brought in for depth.

Tue Nov 9 201012:01Spears out 4-6 weeks with calf strain
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears will miss 4-6 weeks with a strained left calf.
Spears suffered the injury in the debacle against the Packers. The Cowboys are getting really thin on the defensive line with Jason Hatcher (groin) and Sean Lissemore (ankle) also nursing injuries. They're expected to bring in one or two linemen this week to provide depth.

Mon Nov 8 201010:54Spears to have MRI on injured calf
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears will undergo an MRI on his left calf Monday.
Spears was knocked out of Sunday's game in the third quarter and was unable to return. We'll know more about his status once the results of the MRI are in.

Sun Nov 7 201022:22Spears knocked out with calf injury
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears was knocked out of Sunday's game with a calf injury.
The run-stuffing defensive end is not expected to return. The Cowboys are now two two defensive linemen with Sean Lissemore also exiting with an injury.

Mon Sep 6 201018:48Marcus Spears regains his starting job
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears has won back his starting job and will play with Dallas' first-team defense in Week 1.
As usual, Spears will be replaced by Jason Hatcher on all third downs, and Stephen Bowen will play plenty. Dallas' defensive line is the deepest in the league. Don't expect much from Clinton Portis on Monday Night Football.

Thu Aug 26 201014:33Spears says he'll be ready for Week 1
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears (MCL tear) said he will be ready to play against the Redskins in Week 1.
Spears has been out since Aug. 5. On Thursday morning, he worked with a blocking sled and did some running. Spears admitted that Jason Hatcher will get most of the reps in Week 1, but it's not really a downgrade. This Cowboys' defense is insanely deep.

Thu Aug 5 201021:30Spears out 4-6 weeks with sprained MCL
Updating a previous item, Cowboys DE Marcus Spears will miss 4-6 weeks with a sprained MCL in his knee.
Spears sustained the injury in Thursday's practice. Both of his backups, Jason Hatcher and Stephen Bowen, arguably outplayed him last season, so the Cowboys are fine depth-wide. Hatcher is expected to step into the starting lineup opposite Igor Olshansky.

Thu Aug 5 201019:54Cowboys DE Spears has possible MCL sprain
Cowboys DE Marcus Spears hurt his knee during Thursday practice.
Two reporters indicated that it could be an MCL sprain. Spears will undergo an MRI and could miss 4-6 weeks if the scan turns up such an injury. Nothing is certain at this time, though.

Fri Jul 23 201018:23Jerry Jones: We're not trading Marcus Spears
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told FOX Sports' Alex Marvez on Friday that the team will not be trading DE Marcus Spears.
A Miami Herald report Thursday speculated that the Dolphins might have interest in Spears considering Phillip Merling's recent year-ending loss. The Fins since signed Marques Douglas. Though Spears is in danger of losing his starting job in Dallas, he'll at least be kept as a situational run stopper.
