Wed Mar 5 201416:19Steelers release OT Levi Brown, save $6.25M
Steelers released OT Levi Brown.
This was an easy call for GM Kevin Colbert. The move clears $6.25 million in cap space for the annually cap-strapped Steelers. Brown was acquired from the Cardinals in October. He never appeared in a game and tore his triceps in Week 6. Brown turns 30 next week and hasn't been a productive player in years.

Wed Feb 12 201415:03Steelers can save $6.25M by cutting OT Brown
The Steelers can save $6.25 million against the 2014 salary cap by releasing OT Levi Brown.
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported last month that the Steelers had "no intention of keeping" Brown, so cutting him is a no-brainer. The Steelers are currently projected to be about $12 million over the salary cap. Other veterans who could be in trouble include S Troy Polamalu ($8.25 million savings) and CB Ike Taylor ($7 million). Pittsburgh can lower Ben Roethlisberger's $18.895 million cap hit by extending his contract. He's currently signed through 2015.

The Steelers have "no intention of keeping" OT Levi Brown.
Brown never appeared in a game after the Steelers acquired him from the Cardinals in October, tearing his triceps in pre-game warmups ahead of Week 6. Cutting Brown will save the Steelers $6.25 million in salary cap space.

Tue Oct 15 201310:49Steelers place LT Levi Brown (triceps) on IR
Steelers placed LT Levi Brown (triceps) on injured reserve, ending his season.
The Steelers traded a conditional late-round pick to the Cardinals for Brown, making an effort to stabilize their tackle position. Brown never even played a down with Pittsburgh. He hurt his triceps while warming up ahead of the Week 6 win over the Jets -- sustaining the same injury to the same arm that cost him his 2012 season. The Steelers will rinse their hands of Brown this offseason.

Wed Oct 2 201310:19Report: Cards trade LT Levi Brown to Steelers
The Cardinals have agreed to terms on a trade that will send LT Levi Brown to the Steelers.
An overrated talent that was consistently short on performance, Brown finally exits the desert seven years after the Cardinals took him fifth overall. He started 79 games, failing to ever become an even moderately effective player. So far this season, Brown has graded out 60th among 72 of PFF's qualifying tackles. That said, he's an upgrade on current Pittsburgh LT Mike Adams -- especially in the run game. The 0-4 Steelers apparently have no intention of heading into all-out rebuilding mode as Brown is signed through 2016 and owed $6 million in 2014 base salary.

Tue Aug 27 201313:50'Reality is' LT Brown still has starting job
According to AzCardinals.com, the "reality is" that Levi Brown remains the Cardinals' left tackle.
Reporter Darren Urban passes along the information with a sense of resignation. Per Urban, challenger Nate Potter hasn't made "any in-roads in displacing Brown." Brown has had a typically mixed preseason, but will live to see another day on the blindside. We hope Carson Palmer has been working on his footwork.

Mon Jul 22 201318:28Levi Brown in danger of losing starting job?
Cardinals LT Levi Brown reportedly may be in danger of losing his starting job to Nate Potter.
Per beat writer Mike Jurecki, Brown "didn't stick out" during the spring and it has "raised some eyebrows" heading into training camp. In a radio interview last month, coach Bruce Arians acknowledged that Brown looked "very rusty," leaving the door open for Potter to claim the job on Carson Palmer's blind side. Brown has been a slow-footed turnstile for much of his career.

Wed Jun 19 201314:56Cards website convinced Levi Brown will start
AzCardinals.com doesn't "see any way" LT Levi Brown isn't a Week 1 starter.
We agree, even after coach Bruce Arians seemed to crack the door open for Nate Potter in a Tuesday radio interview. Arians has spent the entire offseason pumping up Brown, who, if nothing else, has plenty of experience on the blindside. It's make-or-break year for the former No. 5 overall pick.

Tue Jun 18 201320:55Arians: LT Levi Brown 'very rusty'
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians says LT Levi Brown (triceps) was "very rusty" in minicamp, but that his "skills are still there."
That implies Brown's skills were there before he missed all of 2012 with a torn triceps, but we digress. Arians added that he was "extremely high" on second-year pro Nate Potter, so perhaps blindside duties won't be gifted to Brown after all. Brown hasn't been an effective player through his first 77 career games.

Fri Jun 7 201311:34Arians: Levi Brown an 'elite player'
Speaking Thursday, Cardinals coach Bruce Arians reiterated that he believes LT Levi Brown is an "elite player."
Arians added the caveat "when he's at his best," but apparently called Brown elite three separate times. Brown consistently struggled through his first five seasons before missing all of 2012 with a torn triceps, but it certainly doesn't appear his new coach is going to put him through the rigmarole of a left-tackle competition.

Wed Jun 5 201310:26Cards LT Levi Brown back in action
Cardinals LT Levi Brown (triceps) returned to on-field activities Monday.
It's Brown's first football workout since tearing his triceps during the 2012 preseason. He's penciled in as the starting left tackle once again despite grading out as one of the league's worst in both 2011 and 2010. The Cardinals' improved their offensive line by drafting left guard Jonathan Cooper seventh overall, but it's still a problem unit.

Mon Apr 29 201320:44Levi Brown set to be starting left tackle
Levi Brown and Bobby Massie are penciled in as the Cardinals' starting left and right tackles respectively.
Many expected the Cardinals to address the position in the draft, but they instead drafted two guards -- Jonathan Cooper at No. 7 overall and Earl Watford at No. 116. Coach Bruce Arians recently called Brown an "elite" tackle, while Massie was easily the team's best lineman down the stretch last season. Second-year man Nate Potter is expected to be the swing tackle.

Thu Mar 21 201310:20Arians: Levi Brown is an 'elite' left tackle
Coach Bruce Arians referred to Levi Brown as an "elite" NFL tackle Wednesday.
For some unknown reason, coaches consistently heap praise on Brown. He missed the entire 2012 season due to a torn triceps, but graded out as the league's No. 57 tackle in 2011 and No. 78 (dead last) in 2010. The Cardinals would be wise to address the position in April's draft, Oklahoma OT Lane Johnson could be available at No. 7.

Tue Feb 26 201314:04Cardinals won't move Levi Brown to guard
The Cardinals aren't considering moving OT Levi Brown to guard.
"He's a talent," new coach Bruce Arians said. "I don't think he'd have any problem playing guard. But tackles are harder to find. ... (I) see him more as a right tackle/left tackle than a guard." GM Steve Keim concurred. It's unclear where a rehabbing Brown (triceps) will play in 2013, but he could get yet another chance at left tackle. The Cardinals could consider a new blindside protector at No. 7 in a tackle-rich draft class.

Thu Feb 21 201312:20Arians sounds high on LT Levi Brown
New coach Bruce Arians said the offensive line will be better simply by getting LT Levi Brown back healthy.
Arians appears to have no intention of cutting Brown, who is scheduled to earn $4.75 million next season. The annually underperforming left tackle missed all of last season due to a torn triceps.

Tue Feb 19 201313:51Levi Brown should be ready for OTAs
AzCardinals.com expects LT Levi Brown (torn triceps) to be ready for the Cardinals' offseason program.
We would hope so, as Brown has been out since camp. Of course, it's possible Brown won't participate in the Cardinals' offseason program because he may no longer be a member of the team. He's due $4.75 million, which is steep for a perennially disappointing player who just missed an entire season. However, the new regime needs time to evaluate the 2007 first-round pick before ending his tenure in Arizona.

Fri Aug 24 201219:21Cardinals place LT Brown on injured reserve
Cardinals placed LT Levi Brown on injured reserve with a torn right triceps, ending his season.
There was some thought initially the Cardinals might save Brown's roster spot, but they decided to move on. He only had an outside chance at returning way late in the season. Brown, 28, signed a contract in March that contained $8 million guaranteed, all of which will be paid him in 2012. His 2013 base salary is a relatively affordable $4.75 million, but it's still quite possible Brown has played his final down with the Cardinals. They need to find a superior blindside pass protector next offseason.

Wed Aug 22 201220:28Levi Brown headed for injured reserve?
The Cardinals' website expects the team to place LT Levi Brown on year-ending injured reserve after Tuesday's triceps surgery.
Cardinals.com's Darren Urban suspects the move could happen as soon as Monday, when NFL first cuts take place and teams must trim from 90-man to 75-man rosters. Urban "just doesn't see" Arizona keeping Brown around in hopes of a late-season return. This might be Brown's final training camp with the Cardinals because no future portion of his "five-year" contract is guaranteed.
