The 49ers have waived Dockett (ribs), the Sacramento Bee reports.

Dockett was due to earn a $250,000 roster bonus next week, so the 49ers will move on, while the 34-year-old is now a candidate to catch on elsewhere as a depth defensive tackle.

Dockett sustained a cracked rib and is doubtful for Thrusday's preseason finale against the Chargers, CSN Bay Area reports.

The injury is not presumed to be serious, and Dockett has a decent shot at suiting up week 1 against the Vikings. He will serve as one of the team's pass-rush specialists.

Dockett - who made his preseason debut last Sunday - has been practicing primarily in nickel packages during training camp. This will be a new role for the 34-year-old lineman, as he has spent most of his career with Arizona as a starter. Dockett - who is coming off of an ACL tear - has embraced the role, as it will keep him healthier and allow him to maximize his best ability, getting to the quarterback.

Dockett made his training camp debut Sunday when the club practiced in nickel packages, CSN Bay Area reports.

Dockett - who's knee has been medically cleared for action - was held out of base formations during Saturday's practice, but was a full participant when the team practiced in the nickel Sunday. Coach Jim Tomsula stated that Dockett has "great value" playing one of the interior spots in the nickel formation. But he also didn't rule out Dockett being used at one of the end spots in base formations, stating that, "We've all seen [Dockett] sit on double-teams and dominate on first and second down. He can do them all." So he may simply be held out of base formations during training camp in an effort to keep him healthy.

Dockett (knee) did not appear on the 49ers' initial injury report that was released Tuesday.

The newly acquired Dockett was rehabbing from a torn ACL that cost him the 2014 season. Reports were that his rehabbing process was ahead of schedule, but his absence from the injury report indicates that he should be ready to go by the start of the season. The 49ers are hoping that Dockett can replace the production at defensive end that they lost due to the retirement of Justin Smith.

Dockett (knee) said after Tuesday's practice that his recovery process is "way ahead of schedule" and expects to be ready by the start of the regular season, Cam Inman of the Mercury News reports.

Dockett missed the 2014 season with a torn ACL but is apparently on track to resume his career ahead of the 2015 season. He's the favorite to start up front on the defensive line, although Tony Jerod-Eddie and Lawrence Okoye will be waiting in the wings if Dockett is a bit rusty after such a prolonged absence.

Now more than six months removed from tearing the ACL and MCL in his right knee, Dockett should be healthy in time for the start of the 2015 season. He had 46 tackles (36 solo) and 4.5 sacks over 16 games in 2013, and he's long been more valuable than his statistics alone suggest.

Dockett relayed Wednesday that the weight loss is intended to improve his quickness and return to the field sooner than expected. As he enters the final season of a four-year extension signed in 2010, he acknowledged that he may have played his last snap as a Cardinal due to a cap hit of nearly $10 million for the upcoming campaign. If he remains in the Arizona desert, though, he'll team with Calais Campbell to form a stout defensive front.

Playing less of a two-gapping end spot moving forward, Dockett's sack numbers should rise.

Arizona XTRA 910's Mike Jurecki reports Cardinals RE Darnell Dockett has been fined "six figures" by the team for his in-game altercation with teammate Kerry Rhodes in Week 13, and "could have a limited role" vs. Seattle.

Arizona Sports 620 reports that an undisclosed incident that occurred between Cardinals RE Darnell Dockett and FS Kerry Rhodes late in Sunday's loss to the Jets may result in disciplinary action for Dockett.

Expect more details to emerge by Tuesday. The Cardinals have lost eight straight games, so it wouldn't be shocking if the team began to unravel a bit. Rhodes was the best player on the field in the Jets game, racking up six tackles, three pass breakups, two interceptions, and a forced fumble in the loss.

Darnell Dockett (hamstring) is listed as probable for Sunday's game against the Vikings.
