Wed Jul 30 201414:26Tyron Smith: Signs $109 Million Extension
Smith signed a massive eight-year, $109 million extension with the Cowboys, The Dallas Morning News reports.
Smith, who was named to his first Pro Bowl last season, had the fifth-year option of his rookie contract picked up by the Cowboys in May. That ensured Smith would remain in Dallas through the 2015 season, but after signing his wealthy extension worth $40 million guaranteed Wednesday, Smith will be under contract through 2023 and also collect a $10 million signing bonus. The 23-year-old has missed just one game during his three year career thus far, starting the other 47 contests and conceding just 14 sacks. Now, with Tony Romo coming off back surgery, Smith will protect his blindside for the foreseeable future as the foundation of Dallas' revamped offensive line unit.

The Cowboys will now turn their attention to locking up Dez Bryant, who is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Wed Feb 26 201414:24Tyron Smith could target Joe Thomas money
ESPN Dallas believes Cowboys LT Tyron Smith could target Joe Thomas money on a long-term extension.
Smith is entering the final year of his rookie deal, though the Cowboys hold a fifth-year option for 2015 that they'll likely exercise this spring. But a more lucrative deal will be coming Smith's way in the very near future. He just turned 23 in December; Smith was 20 when the Cowboys took him with the ninth pick in the 2011 draft. Thomas inked a seven-year, $84 million deal that included $44 million guaranteed with the Browns as a 26-year-old back in 2011. Smith is just as good, grading out as a top-two right tackle in 2011 and top-five left tackle last season. The Cowboys hit a home run with Smith.

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith plans to bulk up to 315 pounds this season after playing closer to 305 in 2012.
"I just want to be a better run-blocker and be stronger and more physical," Smith said. "There were times last year where I felt like I was too fast and I was a little off-balanced. I just basically want to add a little weight and stay there, be fast and strong at the same time." Smith had a checkered first year on the blindside, but his play improved down the stretch. Still only 22 years old, Smith has ample room for improvement, and bulking up isn't a bad start.

Cowboys LT Tyron Smith sustained a high-ankle sprain in Sunday's win over the Browns.
Owner/GM Jerry Jones said it's not as bad as a high-ankle sprain can be, but we'd still consider Smith very unlikely to play on Thanksgiving. It's a major concern for the Cowboys, who were already playing without C Ryan Cook (knee). They gave up seven sacks and allowed 10 hits on Tony Romo Sunday. Journeyman Jeremy Parnell is Smith's backup.

According to legendary OL coach Hudson Houck, rookie RT Tyron Smith has Larry Allen-level talent.
Allen is one of the best offensive linemen ever to suit up in the NFL, so it's high praise indeed. Pro Football Focus rates Smith as easily the best rookie offensive lineman as well as the fourth-best tackle overall. With 10-12 pounds of added muscle, the highly athletic Smith could be the best in the league down the line.
