Kilgore (leg) is expected to be sidelined for at least half of the 49ers' training camp, CSN Bay Area reports.

Kilgore was already placed on the PUP list prior to training camp but hopes to be back in action before the season gets underway after undergoing a follow-up procedure on his left leg. He is currently the favorite to win the starting center position out of camp, health permitting.

The 49ers drafted rookie Marcus Martin with the expectation that he would win the starting center job, but an ankle injury has hampered him during the off-season and Kilgore has apparently leapfrogged him on the depth chart.

CSN Bay Area first reported the sides were close to an agreement. A 2011 fifth-rounder, Kilgore had been considered the most likely candidate to take over for free agent Jonathan Goodwin. This sets it in stone. Kilgore has appeared in all 16 games each of the past two seasons, but has just 170 career snaps to his name. He's mostly been used as an extra blocker on offense. The 49ers should be in the market for a back-up plan, perhaps in the form of a draft pick.

Goodwin is a free agent. Center is a popular position for the 49ers in mock drafts, but beat writer Matt Barrows sounds confident San Francisco will use its premium picks elsewhere.
