Because Thompson plays on special teams, he has the upper hand on the third-string role ahead of Ball, who began last season as the starter. While Thompson's roster spot appears to be secure, his fantasy value is still limited as long as Anderson and Hillman are healthy.

As long as Anderson is healthy, Thompson's fantasy upside is fairly limited, though he's only one injury away from being a potential fantasy difference-maker.

Thompson isn't much more than a handcuff, and even that's on very rocky footing, with Ronnie Hillman (ankle) and Montee Ball (groin) both candidates to return before the end of the season.

While Thompson's 6.6 YPC average was a very solid number, C.J. Anderson dominated the backfield touches, rushing 27 times for 167 yards and a touchdown. Thompson will continue to get backup touches with Ronnie Hillman (ankle) and Montee Ball (groin) sidelined, but Anderson will likely get a vast majority of the touches.

Thompson (knee) caught his only target for a five-yard gain, and he did not get a carry during Sunday's loss to the Rams.

With Montee Ball knocked out in the first half after re-injuring his groin, Thompson appeared likely to get at least a few carries, but that wasn't the case, as the Broncos went extremely pass-heavy, rushing only nine times, all of which went to starter C.J. Anderson. With Ball likely to miss a few more weeks with the new injury, and Ronnie Hillman possibly sidelined for up to six weeks with a foot injury, Thompson figures to get a shot at some more carries in Week 12, though production won't be easy to come by against a Dolphins defense allowing the eighth-fewest rushing yards per game this season.

Thompson appeared to be competing with C.J. Anderson for backup carries behind Ronnie Hillman, but Anderson had a breakout performance Sunday, rushing 13 times for 90 yards, while catching four passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. However, with Montee Ball (groin) expected back in Week 11 against the Rams, Thompson may be heading to the inactive list unless the Broncos decide to carry four running backs.

Thompson (knee) had two carries for six rushing yards and one catch on one target for six receiving yards Sunday against the Patriots.

Ronnie Hillman led the backfield once again, accounting for 63 yards and two touchdowns on 17 touches, while fellow backup C.J. Anderson had 51 yards on six touches. Thompson isn't likely to make much of a fantasy impact with Hillman healthy, and he figures to move down the depth chart even further when Montee Ball returns, which could be as soon as Week 10 against the Raiders if he can return to practice next week.

Thompson had seven carries for 24 yards and two touchdowns in Thursday's 35-21 win over the Chargers.

Two of Thompson's carries were one-yard touchdowns while lined up as a fullback in front of Ronnie Hillman, and four of the carries came on a clock-killing drive late in the fourth quarter. The rookie's excellent size may get him a bit of extra work at the goal line, but Hillman has far and away been the Broncos' lead back in Montee Ball's (groin) absence. Hillman has also gotten most of the goal-line snaps at the halfback spot, and he turned in another strong game Thursday night.

Thompson (knee) is listed as active for Thursday's game against the Chargers.

In Montee Ball's continued absence, Thompson is once again slated to work behind Ronnie Hillman in Denver's backfield in Week 8.
