With Nick Moody's release, Skov has become the primary backup to NaVorro Bowman and Michael Wilhoite at middle linebacker.

It was a bit surprising that the 49ers gave up on Moody, who had a strong showing while starting alongside Bowman during the preseason. They must have seen more in Skov, who also impressed during preseason play. Both starters ahead of him on the depth chart are coming off of injuries, so there is a decent chacne that Skov will start at some point this season. If and when that day comes, he would have sneaky IDP value as a cheap source for racking up tackles.

Skov recorded eight tackles (five solo) in Saturday's preseason loss to the Texans.

Skov led all 49ers' defensive players with 66 snaps Saturday. The team wanted to get a good look at the young linebacker with both NaVorro Bowman (rest) and Michael Wilhoite (leg) held out of the game. While he is still a bit raw, he showed a good ability to get to the ball, recording a tackle for a loss on a goal line stand as a part of his eight total tackles. Skov will compete for a backup linebacker/special teams spot on the 53-man roster.

Skov plans to join the 49ers' practice squad once he clears waivers, according to Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee.

This comes as no surprise, as the 49ers were clear in their intentions of wanting to add him to the practice squad.
