Vaughan played the entirety of Thursday's preseason game against the Texans, completing 11 of 20 passes for 115 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.
This may well have been Vaughan's last game with the Cowboys. The team hoped he would be able to challenge Brandon Weeden for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart, but Vaughan instead has appeared to regress from last season and Bryan Broaddus of DallasCowboys.com speculated that Jameill Showers was held out of Thursday's game to prevent other teams from getting more film on him and make it easier for the Cowboys to slip him through to the practice squad. With Showers available on the practice squad as the third QB, the team would have little reason to also keep Vaughan on the 53-man roster.

Vaughan saw the bulk of the action in Thursday's preseason game against the Chargers, completing 12-of-18 passes for 106 yards.
He was under center for the Cowboys' lone scoring drive, setting up Gus Johnson's five-yard TD run early in the second quarter with an impressive 21-yard strike to Devin Street on third and 17. Vaughan has had an up-and-down camp so far, but if he can build on Thursday's performance he still has a chance of unseating Brandon Weeden as Tony Romo's backup.

Vaughan survived the final cuts and landed a spot on the Cowboys' 53-man roster.
Given all the holes on the team's defense this could be temporary, and the practice squad still seems like the best spot for Vaughan, but he apparently showed enough in the preseason that the Cowboys didn't want to risk another team scooping him up in the initial round of waiver claims.
