Spear was waived by the Browns on Tuesday, Scott Petrak of the Elyria Chronicle-Telegram reports.
Barring a late signing, it appears the Browns will go with Travis Coons to handle the kicking duties this season. Spear helped his cause in the job battle by hitting all of his field-goal and extra-point attempts in the first three exhibitions, but coach Mike Pettine said he opted to keep Coons due to his "slightly better" leg.

Spear helped his case in the kicking competition by nailing a 47-yard field goal in Thursday's preseason opener against the Redskins.
Spear appears to have the edge over Travis Coons in the kicker battle, as he was the first name called when it came time to attempt a field goal. That was the only attempt of the game, however, so it's possible coach Mike Pettine would have turned to Coons if another opportunity had came up. Each player converted their lone PAT attempts.
