Sat Jun 7 201414:17Phillip Gaines could see time at free safety
Chiefs third-round CB Phillip Gaines could be moved to free safety.
Gaines was a four-year starter at cornerback for Rice, but the Chiefs are looking at him as a single-high safety during OTAs. He reported to minicamp at just 183 pounds, so Gaines would need to get his weight back up to make the move. Gaines is more likely to see snaps as a boundary corner in Bob Sutton's press-man scheme, and is a candidate to replace Brandon Flowers on the outside in nickel packages.

Chiefs third-round CB Phillip Gaines reported to the team at 183 pounds.
He's lost ten pounds since the Combine, which is a concern for Gaines' chances of playing meaningful snaps early in his Chiefs career. He needs to get his weight back up. Currently, Gaines is Kansas City's No. 4 corner behind Sean Smith, Brandon Flowers, and Marcus Cooper. Chris Owens is also in the mix.
